Owen Jones sent revolting homophobic abuse

Owen Jones has posted some terrible homophobic abuse he received on Twitter. It’s ugly stuff. Apparently he knows who sent it (the person made no effort to hide her identity) so I hope he has informed the police.

He’s blaming it on GC ‘anti-trans’ ‘radicalisation’ anyway.

Maybe we could all list below how many times we’ve sent people abusive, threatening messages online (of any sort)?

He gave enough clues it was easy to find her.

Lots of people pointing out that she hasn’t posted for months, all v innocuous tweets, then in one day sudden leap to post loads of homophobic and racist abuse with her profile clearly revealing who she is and where she works… So she’s been hacked. But that won’t prevent investigative reporter of teenage bullying victims LOJ from setting his million followers on the woman or sending a series of GC WOMEN ARE RADICALISED HOMOPHOBIC RACISTS based tweets to get everyone riled up and remembering to hate women again.

Oh and mumsnet is getting a good few mentions as a hotbed of said radicalisation.

I imagine this is why the teenage girl in the news this week was worried when he started trying to find her. It's a game to a lot of these people on Twitter it seems.

After all, he thinks that lesbians should have sex with male-bodied people. To me, that's homophobia.

Going by your title, I thought that he was the one sending the messages and absolutely wasn't surprised.

looked hacked to me, eg calling Angela Rayner a "slag bitch", racist comments aimed at Ian Wright... a flurry of bigoted abuse after years of unremarkable, isn't, posts doesn't seem to stack up from an account in which a real name and employer are visible.

Homophobic abuse should certainly be condemned. Got to say I can't stand Owen Jones though. One of those insufferable, sanctimonious overgrown students. Ugghh. And he exaggerates his regional accent, which always annoys me.

@Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky I’ve seen some quite lengthy and angry threads on here with lots of abusive things to say about Owen Jones. None of us can claim that we represent a whole group - especially one as loosely defined as GC which hinges around one belief only.

I hope he hasn’t accidentally highlighted the wrong person because it was hacked. That would be truly awful.

Have a look at his own response to that. I can't see how one follows from the other unless he's withholding some information showing the abuser was gender critical, or in the language Jones uses "the anti-trans movement".

The entire premise he tries to flog is ridiculous, really. As if there is actually a ‘slippery slope’ from ‘I don’t think people can literally change sex’ to calling people abusive names and issuing threats. There isn’t. I just think what I’ve always thought. If anyone is radicalised, it’s not me.

I would bet money that he gets awful abusive messages regularly. He will have highlighted this particular one to his followers specifically because it seemed to come from a woman, and presumably his desire to burn a woman at the stake overrode caution and common sense.

Anyway, it's horrible abuse and if the person gets themself a social media ban, or police involvement, that's fine by me.

It was clearly a hacked account - nothing since last October and then a barrage of homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic and racist abuse to various people in 24hrs?

Owen either knew this was a hacked account and tweeted anyway, or was so intent on making a point about 'seemingly normal people being radicalised' that he didn't engage his brain that this might be the case before tweeting identfying information about the account to his 1 million followers.

Now tonight, a woman somewhere is in massive shit with her job, and she most likely didn't even do anything. She will probably still get in trouble though for having her workplace linked to her Twitter and whatever happens, it will cause a load of shit in her workplace.

It is absolute shit to get the sort of abuse he does, but this is not coming from people who have been 'radicalised', it is coming from trolls. And he has never spoken out against the absolutely disgusting abuse about JKR and described those people as 'radicalised'. He is a massive double standard hypocrite.

Yes. Presumably police / Twitter will have some way of knowing if it was really the account owner or if it was hacked, and can sort it from there.

And yes, I do absolutely condemn this white middle class man getting sent homophobic abuse. That's absolutely disgusting and I hope he's able to identify the perpetrators

Since we only have a partial set of facts, I'll leave the thread to continue on its way with a repetition of my view that those messages are horrible and deserve condemnation.

After not using her account for ages, but while still displaying her name and employer.

I found 1 person suggesting maybe the account was hacked...seems very likely to me
then I found someone protesting that no, the woman shouldn't be reported to her employer but rather to her union😆what world are they living in
otoh the tweets are beyond vile and should definitely be reported, I hope he does.
