Owen Jones sent revolting homophobic abuse

Owen Jones has posted some terrible homophobic abuse he received on Twitter. It’s ugly stuff. Apparently he knows who sent it (the person made no effort to hide her identity) so I hope he has informed the police.

He’s blaming it on GC ‘anti-trans’ ‘radicalisation’ anyway.

Maybe we could all list below how many times we’ve sent people abusive, threatening messages online (of any sort)?

I’ll start: 0

This is going to end up just like WiSpa isn't it. Loads of fuss and then once it becomes apparent that they were wrong about it, it will be brushed under the carpet, never spoken of again and ignored every time it is mentioned.

That poor woman.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 23/05/2022 19:38

Not much engagement on that statement from the hotel.....wouldn't want to draw attention to it now would we?

Errr no. The man's an arse and a stirrer but he doesn't dish out abuse like this and he doesn't deserve to receive it. Nobody does.

Maybe I am weird but in my opinion homophobic slurs are disgusting and hateful and obviously a deeply serious matter. If the slurs were in any way linked to a credible real life threat they would be horrific.

But IMHO two things are worse -

(1) Encouraging the online abuse and real life harrassment of women and members of the LGB community for the crime of wanting to retain women's and
gay rights.

(2) Actively seeking to destroy women's and gay rights.

And not only that I am fairly confident that his pleasure in having a stick to beat women with massively outweighs the hurt. I'd bet money he is DELIGHTED he got that abuse, but I wouldn't bet money that it wasn't sent by one of his supporters.

Willowcat77 · 23/05/2022 19:54

Do you think Owen Jones will now apologise for setting his followers on to this young woman? It was so glaringly obvious that her account was hacked, possibly by a teenage boy, judging by the language used. Do you think he genuinely didn't realise this or did he knowingly jump onto this to this as a convenient way to to demonise GC women to his followers?

GoodThinkingMax · 23/05/2022 20:14

It's totally unacceptable.

But he shouldn't tar all feminists with this brush.

The TRAs on twitter appear rattled by Mumsnet. To think they believe we're part of a plan to radicalise unsuspecting people. Radicalised into what? Understanding human biology. Shock horror how very dangerous to humanity we are!

The person that posted it was hacked.

And nothing to do with feminists.

GoodThinkingMax · 24/05/2022 02:28

That's good to hear @AlisonDonut

WandaWomblesaurus · 24/05/2022 06:49

Is it not also homophobic abuse to tell Lesbians they should accept male bodied sexual partners and to encourage gay children to transition?

ScreamingMeMe · 24/05/2022 07:03

Yes of course it is, but two wrongs don't make a right and some people will never see their own hypocrisy.

GoodThinkingMax · 24/05/2022 14:16

Absolutely! But Owen Jones will never see that, because he's a self-righteous arrogant man (nothing to do with his sexuality). I don't think we should add fuel to his stupid fire.

It seems the woman whose account sent the messages announced a new boyfriend the day before the messages were sent. The following day, her ex boyfriend deleted his own Twitter account Hmm

Hmmmnnn...

Woild not be at all shocked if an abusive man was behind it. If he has something to do with this, I hope there are consequences for it.

Clymene · 24/05/2022 16:19

No me neither @ScreamingMeMe. He's been named so I hope the police pursue it.

Hope that this is a lesson for the "journalist" who organised a witch hunt on cue at the behest of an abusive man.

I hope she's okay. And yes, one would hope that people would think for just a moment before instigating a witch-hunt.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 24/05/2022 16:46

Jesus Christ, if this is a revenge hacking from an ex boyfriend that Owen Jones has then highlighted to a million people then that is just terrible.

But now I am wondering if OJ will even give a shit? Surely he will have to publicly apologise?

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 24/05/2022 16:51

Can I just check that all the outrage about LOJ encouraging tweets about the incident of the girl bullied at school have stopped?

MagnoliaTaint · 24/05/2022 16:54

Of course he doesn't give a shit, Lynn. That's abundantly clear. Women are just props that are either useful or damaging to his arguments.

tabbycatstripy · 24/05/2022 16:55

If that’s true that is dreadful.

OP posts:
Clymene · 24/05/2022 16:55

Well he hasn't apologised for trying to track down the poor abused schoolgirl and he hadn't taken down his Facebook post even after all his followers found out who the woman was and were trying to get her fired. And still didn't take it down when her employers posted to say that they didn't think she'd done it.

So no, on the current evidence I'd say no, he's not going to apologise or retract.

Never forget how much he really, really hates women.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 24/05/2022 17:08

You'd think such a committed left-wing activist would be distraught over the possibility that he might have been exploited in an attempt to get a woman unfairly dismissed from her workplace for something she didn't do.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/05/2022 17:08

LOJ has just had a mini rant on Jeremy Vine, about this very subject (unrelated to the subject they were discussing).

Yes - well said, Jane from Liverpool! Predictably, he said his little piece in response, making it sound like she was anti-trans rights rather than pro-women's rights and that he was a nice, kind person battling against hatred and intolerance; and then she was swiftly cut off Sad

KatVonlabonk · 24/05/2022 17:28

Hmm.

I'm glad it's been investigated further, looks like a hack, awful thing to do and say. I hope they trace the ip address.

GoodThinkingMax · 24/05/2022 19:03

Thing is, AFAIK, LOJ has never done the full traditional training as a journalist. He went straight in as a “commentator.”

I’m reminded of the debacle of Johann Hari at the Independent (I think) a decade ago …
