Owen Jones sent revolting homophobic abuse

Owen Jones has posted some terrible homophobic abuse he received on Twitter. It’s ugly stuff. Apparently he knows who sent it (the person made no effort to hide her identity) so I hope he has informed the police.

He’s blaming it on GC ‘anti-trans’ ‘radicalisation’ anyway.

Maybe we could all list below how many times we’ve sent people abusive, threatening messages online (of any sort)?

I’ll start: 0

It’s worrying that Twitter accounts can be hacked so easily and that she wasn’t aware.

Stuff of nightmares.

How does one access the ‘radicalisation’ areas of MN? Is there a minimum post count? Special handshake? Or do I need a Twitter account? Because at that I draw the line 😕

According to some
people, just glancing in MN’s general direction will do the job?

Are you saying you are not radicalised?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/05/2022 08:16

What was the abuse to Willoughby and Rayner?

IW got called the American f-word for gay, and two repetitions of a sentence that would be deleted on MN.

Angela received the most British abuse: "slag bitch".

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 23/05/2022 08:52

Giving him the benefit of tbe doubt, it's possible that he was so keen to make the point about normal people being radicalised by Mumsnet/JKR etc that he posted the Aldi/Captain Tom info without thinking it through. And without thinking that it looked highly likely this young woman's account had been hacked.

I’m not sure how much benefit this doubt affords him. It’s his job to think! If he’s too giddily overcome by the excitement of being spiteful to think through his behaviour, it doesn’t put him in a better light.

I think any reasonable person would assume “hack” on looking at the facts here. Jones had access to all the relevant facts. He is not a reasonable or rational person and his unhinged behaviour seems to me to be escalating.

Still it’s deflected all the censure he got last week for his behaviour around the story with the schoolgirl & asking ppl involved with the school ti tweet him

Abhannmor · 23/05/2022 08:55

Maybe hacked by more than one person. Or a racist Tory homophobic Spurs fan. Could it be someone having a mental health crisis though? Why else would you post that awful stuff under your own name.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 23/05/2022 08:57

It's clearly a hacked account. But yet again we have Owen Jones as the real victim after all the recent accounts of his bullying behaviour and the targeting of a teenage girl, we have yet another righteous mob whipped up against a woman that no one can criticise Jones about this time because he's the real victim with this overshadowing all his own actions so we have to forget what he's done and we have women yet again completely erased from our own liberation because all we are to Jones is 'anti-trans.'

I feel like there's a pattern here because I know I've seen this before, even typed the same words, I've probably posted on mumsnet or twitter about it. Maybe I'll AS myself. But at least he's taking responsibility for the anti-woman movement's attacks on women that go far beyond the commonplace anti-woman rape and death threats, doxxing and getting women sacked to include murder, rape, sexual assaults and physical assaults. Oh wait...

Even more reason for women not to be on twitter.

We just need to keep organising for women's rights in person as well as on MN which - however much I don't like all the rules - has been a bastion of free speech for a group who often are excluded from public discourse - yes, women.

The way that OJ is reacting makes it seem like he's not actually that bothered about the homophobic abuse but just wants to use it as a springboard to cause harm to women yet again.

And how you get from homophobic abuse to 'anti-trans' movement I don't know. There are no logical steps.

And contacting someone's employer is bullying, no two ways about it. Contacting the police is the correct way to deal with this - so that the facts (e.g. was the account hacked or not) can be established. Not just hounding someone who's potentially innocent out of a job. I don't really see that this is much better than the abuse itself.

Aposterhasnoname · 23/05/2022 09:23

Number of threatening abusive messages I’ve sent 0

Number I’ve received, lost count at around 50.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/05/2022 09:25

Yes, good timing!

DrudgeJedd · 23/05/2022 09:26

And now he's highlighted this thread to his one million followers. Which is a bit daft as any that pop in for a look might start to have second thoughts about how this is playing out...

Thanks Potholes. So no quotes from Julia Long or Jane Clare Jones then?

Always the lone screenshot, never the actual link to the thread.

Hopefully some of them will come over though and we can discuss what's happening!

SpindleInTheWind · 23/05/2022 09:32

I agree that OJ should have contacted Twitter and the Police and reported the account.

A basic google search shows that Section 127 of the Communications Act makes it an offense to send public messages of a “grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character,” which is quite clearly a very broad remit. (Which ironically is what a lot of OJ's followers have also now done.)

I wonder if he has trouble following policies and procedures at work. Wasn't there something about that a while back ... Private Eye ... oooh wait ... on the tip of my brain ...

Hi, how you doing today?

We're worse than 4Chan according to his fans 😁

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/05/2022 09:34

Who has he screenshotted?

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 23/05/2022 09:36

Also, the major vibe I get from that abuse directed at OJ is that the perpetrator couldn't give a flying fuck about women's spaces being erased.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 23/05/2022 09:39

Wow, he’ll have had to hunt hard for the perfect screenshot to take out of context. So he’s read this whole thread and he’s still doubling down.

This is the post he shared, probably the only one that didn't condem the abuse or mention possible hacking. He's very good at this isn't he?

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 23/05/2022 09:41

Who has he screenshotted?

Someone saying he was nasty.

Plasmodesmata · 23/05/2022 09:45

Not a poster's name I recognise, either. If Advanced Search wasn't broken we could see if they're a regular poster. But it is, so...
Most of the thread being "yes those messages are obviously vile and should not have been sent but maybe hang on a minute before giving enough information for your followers to find a woman and threaten her livelihood before the full story is clear in case it's not her fault".

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 23/05/2022 09:47

I can't imagine him bothering to read what us silly women on here think, plus doing that would mean he had actually properly bothered to read something. He probably got sent that by one of the many TRAs who spend their lives on here looking for screenshots.

Hi huns!!!!

The search function is truly knackered but if you try to send a DM to that user it won't work because "user name not valid"
How curious, it's almost like someone went to the trouble of creating an account to make one post which has then ended up on Owen's twitter feed as proof of how nasty we all are.🤔
