To wonder why an MP is lying about womens bathrooms?

Lucy Allen has tweeted that the Barbican has mens bathrooms and gender neutral bathrooms, but no womens bathrooms.

Lots of twitter users told her that was wrong.

The Barbican itself told her it's wrong.

But the tweet remains. AIBU to think that if an MP gets something wrong, they should apologise and remove the lie? Or to think that this is deliberate misinformation to further the myth of women being 'erased'?

Last time I was at the Barbican the toilets in the area where I was were mixed. A man walked into what used to be women's toilets and came out quickly looking mortified. I haven't been back since so not sure whether they've reinstated women's loos in all areas of the building?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 28/03/2022 09:46

Why do they have bathrooms at the Barbican? Wouldn't toilets be enough?

girlmom21 · 28/03/2022 09:46

Her tweet says that she received a message saying that, not that it was her experience.

She has no reason to apologise because her comment is true. She received the message.

Are you going to apologise and get your thread removed for sharing deliberate misinformation?

That doesn't sound good, but can we please stop calling toilets "bathrooms"!

Franca123 · 28/03/2022 09:48

Also what is a 'gender specific' loo. Does that mean I'll get kicked out of the ladies if I'm wearing jeans and no make up? I don't want to be forced to use the gender neutral toilets because I'm not comforming to sexist stereotypes of suitable women's dress.

PierresPotato · 28/03/2022 09:50

All I remember is that there were NEVER enough women's toilets there anyway.
Queues a mile long while DH could waltz in and out of men's.
Toilets have long been an issue and I imagine if even one of the women's have become gender neutral the old situation will have been exacerbated!

Oh come on - sharing misinformation under the guise of 'someone said X' is the oldest trick in the Trumpian playbook.

Misinformation is misinformation whether she's passing it on second hand or not.

Bathroom sounds nicer than toilet.

VikingVolva · 28/03/2022 09:50

So if you go to a place, see only a fraction of the facilities, write that the facilities are inadequate, then thus must be treated as true because it's what you saw.

That there is the whole truth - the facilities actually exist and can be shown to exist - doesn't seem to matter.

I'm not sure what cause she thought she was furthering, but she's made herself look narrowed-minded and prejudiced, and with an inability to represent fairly.

PierresPotato · 28/03/2022 09:51

I'd be barred from a gendered loo too. 🤣
I wonder at these stories of admiring outfits and lipstick or nail varnish in the ladies toilets as its so far from my own experience.

Bathroom is a different thing though in the UK.

Gender neutral just means that you can use them regardless of your gender.

But of course you do raise an important issue. Far too many women have been challenged using womens bathrooms because they don't look sufficiently like women as far as some users were concerned.

Gender non-conforming lesbians have particular experience of this. And its all kicked off with gender critical types policing bathroom (or toilet...) use.

It doesn't make any sense to use the wrong word because it "sounds nicer"!
PierresPotato · 28/03/2022 09:56

Toilet itself is a euphemism which presumably sounded better than the word it replaced.

Franca123 · 28/03/2022 09:56

Yeah. Gender Criticals policing bathroom use. And back on planet earth.......

PierresPotato · 28/03/2022 09:57

I've never seen anyone policing a toilet either.

Clymene · 28/03/2022 09:59

But they have converted what were the main women's toilets to mixed sex, no? And while there are still women only toilets, they are not very easily accessible.

So it's quite true and you just look a bit of a tit

To wonder why an MP is lying about womens bathrooms?
HoveringDonkeyofKnock · 28/03/2022 10:02

It’s loo or lavatory. Toilet is non u and bathroom is American!
Apparently.

The Barbican is a massive complex so I think the concept of the 'main' womens bathroom is a bit of a misnomer.

There are a huge number of different bathrooms.

Lucy Allen claims (to have been told that...) there were no womens bathrooms, and that was a lie.

The women who have been challenged in bathrooms because they looked too butch and someone thought they were trans women or men would disagree with you.

So what - you think the various lesbians who have told us about their experiences being challenged in womens bathrooms by people who think they are men or are trans are just lying?
OP posts:
Clymene · 28/03/2022 10:07

Oh not the old butch women trope again 🙄🙄🙄🙄

This is what Allen's tweet said. That's the message she got. She didn't say it was true, she just posted what someone told her.
