To wonder why an MP is lying about womens bathrooms?

709 replies

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 09:33

Lucy Allen has tweeted that the Barbican has mens bathrooms and gender neutral bathrooms, but no womens bathrooms.

Lots of twitter users told her that was wrong.

The Barbican itself told her it's wrong.

But the tweet remains. AIBU to think that if an MP gets something wrong, they should apologise and remove the lie? Or to think that this is deliberate misinformation to further the myth of women being 'erased'?

I've been going to gay pubs and clubs since I was 15, and I'm very fortunate to know a lot of women who are bi or lesbian. I have never met a single woman who has been mistaken for a man in a toilet, but I have always been able to spot a transwoman from 50 paces away. I've met a transwoman who spent thousands on facial surgery and it was still instantly clear that they were male.

Male people have larger hands and feet than women. They have a completely different shoulder to hip ratio. Even the most petite male person will still have different hip bones to women, so the way they walk is instantly recognisable as a male gait.

I don't know who is supposed to benefit from perpetuating this daft myth that women can be mistaken for transwomen.

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 10:47

@Natfemale

But it means precisely, exactly that. There are toilets which are labelled as being for men ( urinals?) . There are toilets labelled for the use of both sexes ( or none I suppose if you are non binary). There are no toilets labelled for women. So there are no women’s toilets. The gender specific ones are for MEN.

I’m afraid that it is not these (we ) people who are misspeaking the truth.

What?

The Barbican has toilets for women, toilets for men, toilets which are gender neutral, and toilets for people with disabilities.

I think it's fairly clear who, to be honest.

Why are you ignoring those lesbians who have an experience different to those people you know?

And why do you imagine that every lesbian you have ever met would have told you if they've had a negative experience in a toilet?

@EvilGoldfish

On what planet do people regularly confuse butch lesbians with transwomen/men?

That’s only possible if someone has no eyes, or ears.

I really don’t understand this modern push that actually, we can’t tell men apart from women. It’s as clear as the difference between night and day, no matter how that person is dressed/styled. Maybe in a carefully staged photo, certainly not in real life where the person is talking/moving.

It’s complete and utter hogwash.

So the lesbians who say you're wrong are just lying about their experiences, are they?

Not just her. Loads of Right wing commentators did the same. Lies are common currency now.

DomesticatedZombie · 28/03/2022 10:50

@Whatalovelydaffodil

That doesn't sound good, but can we please stop calling toilets "bathrooms"!
Unless this was another LIE and there are actually GIANT BATHS by the urinals.
DomesticatedZombie · 28/03/2022 10:52

@SalsaLove

Bathroom sounds nicer than toilet.
But if there's no bath in the room it's inaccurate FAKE NEWS.

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Perhaps they wanted to borrow a loofah?

You could have stopped after the first 7 words in your AIBU, OP - it’s because she’s an MP😜

YABU OP.

A gender specific bathroom isn't a single sex space. Anyone who thinks they are that gender can rock up in that space. With their dick.

YABU OP.
Why?

Helleofabore · 28/03/2022 10:59

So the tweet said

I received this message today: “I was at the Barbican yesterday where there were male toilets, disabled toilets, and gender neutral toilets. I asked where were the female toilets as I am not gender neutral I am a woman and they laughed in my face. Women are being erased.”

It is entirely possible that the person asked and was told the wrong information by staff. Doesn't make the Barbican's statement true or not true, it is the information given that was key.

It is also entirely possible that the staff member giving the information didn't know, or had an agenda of their own for not pointing the person asking to the single sex toilets.

Nicholethejewellery · 28/03/2022 11:00

@trollopolis

So there are no women’s toilets

Yes there are - I've seen and used them

Why are people so desperate to believe the lie that there are none?

Because the truth doesn't fit the agenda.
bellinisurge · 28/03/2022 11:00

There's a scene in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy about a complaints department being in a basement where the stairs and lights are gone and the section is in a locked cabinet with a sign saying "Beware of the leopard" on it. A woman's toilet that is as easy to find as that is not a public women's toilet.

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 11:00

Separate issue though.

If someone objects to trans inclusive policies that allow people use toilets that align with their gender identity, that's one thing.

But Lucy Allen didn't say there are no 'single sex' bathrooms.

She furthered a claim that there are no women's bathrooms, but there are men's bathrooms (and gender neutral bathrooms). That claim is a lie.

Have you been to the Barbican?

There is no difficulty in finding women's bathrooms. I do not deny that there can be long queues at show time. Though you can get around that by just seeking out another one further away from the auditorium. You know why? Because there are lots of toilets in the Barbican.

They are not hidden in some basement with no lights FFS.

I have MS. It means I often have urgency issues. I don't use a disabled toilet because I'm not entitled to a blue badge. If the signpost women's toilets for the women's toilet is not next to the signs for the other toilets, I am put at a disadvantage. Thanks for not thinking about it

Pluvia · 28/03/2022 11:07

I don't have a gender, OP. Please tell me in less than 500 words what gender is, because I've no idea — unless it really does come down to sexist pink and blue and skirts and trousers nonsense. What loo should all the women I know who don't believe in the gender faith use?

It's sex, OP. Sex. Female XX, male XY. That's how we have always divided loos up and what the Barbican needs to return to pronto. Decent men are mortified at the potential for causing offence to women. Women want to be able to have private space free of men with cameras or men who get a frisson from invading their space.

ScreamingBeans · 28/03/2022 11:11

I'm not saying it doesn't happen at all that no butch lesbian has ever been challenged ever in the UK

I specifically said in my point D that when they are, all they have to do is speak for anyone challenging them to back down apologetically.

I imagine that with all these men demanding access to women's spaces, butch lesbians will get more harassment than they used to. As usual, it's lesbians who get the sharp end of the stick as a result of transactivism.

Not sure what this has to do with the topic of the thread, which is Lucy Allen's false claim (or implication...) that the Barbican doesn't have women's bathrooms.

There's loads of women's toilets at the Barbican. I go there a lot and I also used to work there - though that was admittedly over a decade ago - but I still find it very hard to believe anyone would be laughed at for asking where the women's toilets are? Staff were very nice there when I worked there and that doesn't seem to have changed...

Also, anyone who is confused as to why you might have to ask where something is in the Barbican very obviously has never been to the labyrinth that is the Barbican.

ScreamingBeans · 28/03/2022 11:16

LOL at people who claim that men are women if they say they are, complaining about lies and fake news.

You couldn't make it up.
