To wonder why an MP is lying about womens bathrooms?

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 09:33

Lucy Allen has tweeted that the Barbican has mens bathrooms and gender neutral bathrooms, but no womens bathrooms.

Lots of twitter users told her that was wrong.

The Barbican itself told her it's wrong.

But the tweet remains. AIBU to think that if an MP gets something wrong, they should apologise and remove the lie? Or to think that this is deliberate misinformation to further the myth of women being 'erased'?

Depends what you mean by policed. I’ve been told the mens are over that way by women leaving the loos or from someone tapping me on the shoulder while in the queue. So not technically policed but it’s happened and I’m not a butch lesbian but have short hair…

I have never seen this in the ladies loo...I have absolutely no doubt that it has happened...I've just never seen it

Actually now i think of it, it happened to me once a long time agai but a man said it before I actually got in there Grin so I'm not counting it

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 11:17

@bellinisurge

I have MS. It means I often have urgency issues. I don't use a disabled toilet because I'm not entitled to a blue badge. If the signpost women's toilets for the women's toilet is not next to the signs for the other toilets, I am put at a disadvantage. Thanks for not thinking about it
But sign posts to toilets are not universal. There will always be places in the building where you have to look around or walk a bit to find a sign post to the bathroom you need.

If you happened to be outside the gents/gender neutral toilets and there wasn't a signpost, that might not be fun. But it's no different to being outside the cafe and not seeing a signpost, or being near the kiosk selling programmes and not seeing a signpost.

The point is there will be places in the building where it takes a bit more effort to find out where the toilet you need is. That is just a fact of life that there will never be sign posts within eyeline everywhere.

@ScreamingBeans

LOL at people who claim that men are women if they say they are, complaining about lies and fake news.

You couldn't make it up.

So are you comfortable with an MP spreading lies or not?

Which MPs don't?

Honestly. Have we got a list somewhere?

Stop calling them bathrooms

Can you explain why @TeaKlaxon - if there are butch women being challenged in women's toilets that your solution is to make them mixed sex?

Because I'm really struggling to understand the logic.

Blossomtoes · 28/03/2022 11:24

I'm saying MPs shouldn't spread misinformation

Meanwhile back here in the real world where the PM blatantly lies all the time …

Oops should answer the OP

I don't know too much about the ins and outs of this particular situation but even if this is an outright lie or an honest mistake it should be corrected if wrong

Can you explain why @TeaKlaxon - if there are butch women being challenged in women's toilets that your solution is to make them mixed sex?

Because I'm really struggling to understand the logic.

Firstly, the point about butch women being challenged was an aside to a pp who wondered what gender neutral bathrooms were.

Second, I'm not sure what your post has to do with the misinformation being spread by 'gender critical' people who are now just blatantly lying about toilets (better?!) available to women.

Hence the person complaining to their MP asked and was laughed at.

And obviously not told where the single sex toilets they asked for was.

That was the tweet, wasn't it?

NewPanDrawer · 28/03/2022 11:27

You are very clearly not being unreasonable @TeaKlaxon, the tweet is misinformation. I live very near the Barbican and visit frequently, and the tweet is just wrong. An MP hiding behind the excuse of "I'm just passing on what I've been told" is almost worse than the original lie. Once we start tolerating that there's no end to it, and I'd urge those defending it to think where that leads.

(You'll spend all day playing whack-a-mole with the ladies from the sex-and-gender board, the tweet fits the erasure-of-women trope, and they won't relinquish it easily Grin)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/03/2022 11:28

Don't worry, TeaKlaxon is perfectly familiar with us ladies of the sex and gender board.

Indeed. I saw this a couple of days ago, but assumed she'd have deleted the tweet by now. I wasn't massively hopeful that she'd apologise or acknowledge she got it wrong, but thought 'surely, she won't be so shame faced as to leave this blatant misinformation up' even after the Barbican itself corrected her.

I only started this thread as she has left it up - there is no way this is now just an 'honest mistake'. It is a choice to lie.

And from the sounds of this thread, plenty 'gender critical' people have no problem with lies.

I thought it was interesting that it came the same couple of days that the reported from GB News tweeted a similar lie about a pub in Belfast.

Is this now just what Gender Critical people do?

Make claims that are blatantly untrue? And if that is the case, doesn't that prove that their case against trans people is pretty hollow - if they have to lie about the consequences of wokery (or whatever they're railing against this week...) then that suggests the actual real world consequences aren't all that bad...

You mean we live in the real world where lying by the government is so commonplace we don’t believe them when they say the sky is blue?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/03/2022 11:34

Is calling women liars on the internet, your thing, OP? Each to their own.

HoveringDonkeyofKnock · 28/03/2022 11:37

I asked where were the female toilets as I am not gender neutral

That’s a bit pathetic. What are disabled people supposed to do, disabled toilets are usually gender neutral.

I don’t hear disabled people saying excuse me Jan but I’m a woman not a gender neutral.

I think she is calling liars liars not women liars Hmm
334bu · 28/03/2022 11:37

So how many female toilets are there in the Barbican ? Are they hidden away or readily accessible? Are they signposted or not?

Helleofabore · 28/03/2022 11:38

And from the sounds of this thread, plenty 'gender critical' people have no problem with lies

And yet, the tweet was about a woman who asked for the directions to the female single sex toilet and was laughed out. Not actually given the information.

And you are the one talking about spreading misinformation but not addressing the actual subject of the tweet.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/03/2022 11:39

I think she is calling liars liars not women liars

If you say so. I wouldn't assume this person's gender, either.

DiscontentedWoman · 28/03/2022 11:40

I don't have a bloody gender. Which bogs should I use? And stop calling them bloody bathrooms ffs.

DdraigGoch · 28/03/2022 11:45

if I saw gents and gender neutral bathrooms in a venue as large as the Barbican, I would just assume the women's bathroom is somewhere else.

@TeaKlaxon you'd be able to find the women's quite easily, because the queue for the remaining female-only facilities will be zig-zagging around the building. Such is an inevitable consequence of reducing the female facilities available in a type of venue already known for long queues for the women's toilets.

The men (who hardly needed to queue in the first place) have the choice of using the men's, the "gender-neutral with urinals" (so also the men's), and the "gender-neutral with cubicles" (which few women feel comfortable using).

The women meanwhile will mostly feel uncomfortable using toilets shared with men and will certainly be too uncomfortable to use the ones with urinals. So most of the women will be left queuing for the remaining single-sex toilets.

Well that's because the toilets say 'disabled' not 'gender neutral'...

Disabled toilets tend to be for use one a time - there's not normally a communal area.
