Some bearded American pillocks are objecting to the idea of Mumsnetters talking about feminism. Hadley Freeman and other feminists are doing an excellent job of responding.

That phrase will fly over the heads of many, if not most, Americans, by the way.

When I moved to England 21 years ago I had to change my flights last-minute and my English soon-to-be flatmate’s plans were disrupted as she had scheduled her time collect me from the airport. She texted that she was “quite cross” (and I don’t blame her, it was an inconsiderate shambles on my part), but the point is that I had NO IDEA this phrase was full of rage.

I love British women.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/03/2022 10:59

It's clearly too much to ask they click, read, even engage? Easier to fan the flames of online outrage with a quick RT than bother listening to anything women have to say though isn't it.

That's exactly what they wanted to do though, so why would they.

BraveBananaBadge · 24/03/2022 10:59

Fact remains if those screenshots will be enough for plenty of people to completely disregard MN completely, and to perpetuate the myth of its awfulness as if they know what they're talking about, Artichoke. And so it goes on.

For some reason it doesn't cross their tiny minds that within the thread there will be actual discussion, not a bunch of cartoon fascists cackling trans people have no right to exist - which they seem to think it is.

Thelnebriati · 24/03/2022 11:03

No, no, we do;

The US is the 10th most dangerous country in the world for women.

I know, that was partly why I used it Grin.

Hmmm. If I recall correctly one of the last manifestations of a "woke bloke" arriving to tell women off on here started by suggesting we were allied with right wing anti abortionists and then spectacularly outed themselves by posting rape apologist threads and advocating experimenting on babies in the womb. It was very revealing.

Smokeahontas · 24/03/2022 11:05

For me, it was Mumsnet that drew attention to what is going on with the erosion of womens rights. Highlighting things like the hospital that said a woman couldn’t have been raped as there was no man etc.

The GC subreddits were closed down because of one person, AC. Twitter becomes a pile on. I could go through many more, but this is the only mainstream site where discussion is not shut down.

What I’ve learned is that because they’re so entrenched in their own echo chambers, the echo started by men, that they simply cannot handle any deviation from the script. There’s some sort of mental block to having their views challenged by the actual wimmin, it makes them scream these deranged chants of ‘literal violence’ etc. Easier to scream TERF than actually talking about things.

QuinkWashable · 24/03/2022 11:06

Might be worth a hate listen, if you need an extra bit of energy to get the windows clean or whatever..

I believe we're to listen to things whilst doing the washing up these days :)

ResisterRex · 24/03/2022 11:07

This is worth repeating:

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/03/2022 11:08

It is, and actual legible discussions actually happen here, despite a barrage of bad faith trolling.

HardyBuckette · 24/03/2022 11:09

Privileged American men struggling to understand people in rest of world not being like America. I am shocked, I tell you, shocked.

yellowsuninthesky · 24/03/2022 11:10

yes for me too. And also the only place where you could safely discuss it (and largely still is, though kudos to the Times newspaper more recently, as well).

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 24/03/2022 11:11

Oh gosh, not women being allowed to think and speak for themselves.. we must be stopped clearly Hmm

QuirkyTurtle · 24/03/2022 11:14

Surely no one would argue that Mumsnet is a feminist environment? I mean, it's entertaining but there's a fair amount of misogyny and most threads are just women slagging off other women.

LittleWhingingWoman · 24/03/2022 11:14

@WeeBisom

It's absolutely hilarious to hear people say that Mumsnet is a far right recruitment zone, and '4 chan for middle class white women'. Yep, someone had better call Prevent, there's an awful lot of women being radicalised.
Even though it's middle class white people who are pushing the trans ideology on their middle class white children.
WinterTrees · 24/03/2022 11:14

Men want to own and dominate the internet like they have owned and dominated all public physical space since the start of time.

They mostly succeed, as they have done since the start of time.

Mumsnet really, really pisses them off.

PermanentTemporary · 24/03/2022 11:14

One of my fondest MN memories was the US creationist (it was 2007, that was the nonsense du jour) who came over to tell us all about creationism, and who got extremely hot and bothered about the swearing on the thread. He was used to people giving him a hard time about the belief but couldn't stay calm at our 'potty mouths'. Different place, mate.

LittleWhingingWoman · 24/03/2022 11:15

Wait till they get a load of Ovarit - where the women aren't censored and give no shits about calling a man a man.

PacificState · 24/03/2022 11:21

Douthat is a sort of middling US conservative type - I doubt he meant to cite Mumsnet in a disapproving way, I suspect he just thought it was a relevant piece of info in answer to the question. He's pretty scathing about TRA politics (although not much of a feminist).

RoyalCorgi · 24/03/2022 11:21

It's a universal problem with Americans. No offence intended to any lovely Americans who may be reading this thread, but I've noticed that even the more broadminded ones tend to assume that anything that happens in the US is representative of the rest of the world. And at the same time that the US is better than everywhere else.
Pluvia · 24/03/2022 11:31

Thanks for the laughs. Lovely to see Hadley Freeman calling the beardy bros out.

I see Jen Ives is in there, wailing over women talking honestly about biology...

DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 11:34

@ReeseWitherfork

It really irks me that there are tweets criticising Mumsnet users based on the feminism boards being predominantly about trans issues. Apparently us feminists don't talk about much else. It irks me because there are plenty of feminism-related threads in other boards but they don't get moved. MNHQ has a habit of moving any trans issues to the feminism boards so it becomes skewed. Feminism on Mumsnet isn't restricted to trans issues, it's just that the boards aren't used in the way these Twitter users think. Plenty of feminism related topics all over the site.
Not just that, my posts on feminist topics unrelated to gender ideology get moved to the naice board. Then we get accused of only talking about the one topic. On the board that we were forced onto because people didn't want to hear about that topic.

Notably all the posters who asked for a special, nice 'feminist chat' board free of nasty loud women seem to have vanished like dew on the grass. Who could have anticipated it?

Well pretty much every woman here did.... Grin

But no one could accuse of HQ not carefully listening, responding, showing good will all the way.... and proving their core users right again.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/03/2022 11:47

But of course Hmm
