Some bearded American pillocks are objecting to the idea of Mumsnetters talking about feminism. Hadley Freeman and other feminists are doing an excellent job of responding.

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Much as I'm sure he'd call himself a feminist (there aren't enough eye rolls for that), that he thinks he has the right to tell women why they're wrong about women's issues boggles my mind in many directions at once.

There are so many of these men on Twitter and they are all self congratulating and reinforcing each other's righteousness.

The bearded wing of the feminist movement.
ProseccoStorm · 24/03/2022 12:57

I'd just like to say that yes, it was Mumsnet who alerted me to the complete batshittery that is happening at the moment regarding women's rights.

And it's Mumsnet that encouraged me to share this message with those that will listen.

Long live Mumsnet

@DomesticatedZombie

I am continually perplexed by the Anglophone divergence on transphobia. Why is there so much more TERF representation in the UK elite than in their US and Canadian peers?

Parklife.

Right, you've set the music off in my head now so I have to do this..

[Chorus Music]

"Aaalll the beardies,
So many blokies,
Heads spin round and round
'cause wimmin hold their
ground,
Mumsnet..."
[Dah du duh duh dahhhh]

Lovely bit of imperialism.

Sophoclesthefox · 24/03/2022 12:58

There are legions of men (and sadly, numerous women) who would see the whole place burned to the ground so that the conversation about women’s rights and gender identity would stop.

Those people give not one single shit about the oceans of support that this place provides around not just motherhood but relationships, finance, health, fitness…their anger is directed at women saying no. There is no way that we could discuss the topic because they are not seeking the minimum reasonable solution (“agree to disagree”) that would be normal about a contentious topic. They just want women shut up.

We should all be worried about this kind of pernicious misogyny. It’s not a question of “why aren’t you this worried about abortion rights, hmm?”. Controlling womens reproductive autonomy and simultaneously redefining “being a woman” away from the biological reality are two cheeks of the same misogynistic arse.

RufusthefIorallovingreindeer · 24/03/2022 13:00

unless they say "cs" then the post is deleted and there's loud complaining about "cs is a slur" wawawah...

That's an outright lie

DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 13:00

Are we due an influx of tedious chin-stroking observers?

Best get my suitable frock on. I'm not doing tea, though, they'll have had theirs already, I expect.

Tanith · 24/03/2022 13:02

The glorious irony is that it's entirely down to the TRA's "No Platform!" cancelling antics that got so many feminists thrown off other online boards.
They have only themselves to blame.

There are some people who specifically HATE the fact that this website has supported - what was it, over 6,000? - women to leave abusive and violent relationships.

They don't like women helping other women with health info, breastfeeding support, mental health issues, assertiveness, or recipes.

It all just stinks of women getting on with things without instruction from their betters.

@PermanentTemporary

The UK is a small society with an odd, incestuous media landscape that picks up particular issues and harps on them endlessly. People get jobs in British media because they already have contacts, and by contacts I mean close relatives as a rule. That happened even before social media got involved to intensify the process. US media is a bigger landscape though has some of the same issues as print media business contracts sharply.

Print media guy publishes clickbait on twitter is not surprising. Throwing shade on British women is not surprising. Trashing women owned business is not surprising. The lack of interest and insight is depressing though.

Having worked extensively in the British print media for over a decade, I’ve not seen that. Prominent editors, writers, designers etc. All of us with no relatives or friends already in media. City post grad journalism course is where networking happens and it was friends from there people thought of if they heard of a junior post vacancy. I was recruited into a work experience program from uni. I wasn’t rich and couldn’t live at home. Funded myself through uni and work experience. Once doing work experience the network starts as people always want good staff and ask for recommendations. It’s a small world and everyone seems to know almost everyone within a few contacts which is good if you’re good at your job!
DdraigGoch · 24/03/2022 13:09

@tabbycatstripy

It's actually embarrassing to see them all railing against the First Amendment. Do they want to be spoon-fed ideas by the state, or arrive at them independently?
It would be nice if they devoted that energy into revoking the Second Amendment instead.
Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/03/2022 13:14

It's almost as though the bearded woke blokes know exactly what a woman is...🤔

They simply cannot wrap their brains around women actually being fully independent, individual humans who can function without a man present.

Because they are unable to barge in here, assert their manly authority and take control of our conversations they must destroy it.

If they can't have it, women aren't allowed it.

They can fuck back off to reddit where men discuss their rape fantasies, or the actual lesbians sub where actual lesbians are banned by the male mods for daring to point out what an actual lesbian actually is.

Datun · 24/03/2022 13:16

unless they say "cs" then the post is deleted and there's loud complaining about "cs is a slur" wawawah...

Do you want to use the term cis as a slur, and can't?

Because yes, that's another thing. Women can complain. About whatever the fuck they like. Including slurs.

So guess what, you have to be decent on this site. You can't just slur women willy-nilly. If you do, you'll be deleted.

Oh, the power .

DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 13:18

Oh, gosh, my memory was accurate:

'Based on an analysis of posts on Mumsnet, we estimate that around 6000 women have been supported to leave abusive relationships in the last three years'

www.mumsnet.com/articles/violence-against-women

beastlyslumber · 24/03/2022 13:20

Wow those men on twitter are extremely stupid.

DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 13:21

Other campaigns that I believe were born on Mumsnet:

wecantconsenttothis.uk/

'a response to the increasing use of “rough sex” defences to the killing or violent injury of women and girls. '

www.lettoysbetoys.org.uk/

'a campaign asking the toy and publishing industries to stop limiting children’s interests by promoting some toys and books as only suitable for girls, and others only for boys.'

Of course there is also all Mumsnetters' undercover work for the US Xtian Right, supported ably by Vladimir Putin, which many women find they can squeeze in on a day when there isn't too much laundry on.

BinBandit · 24/03/2022 13:23

If we women are so god damned awful, why do the menz want to be us?

PermanentTemporary · 24/03/2022 13:24

Thank you @PerkyBlinder - I'll withdraw my comments. I'm glad that the British media is more open than it looks.

The original tweet does suggest that there isn't much public or intellectual space focused around women as a class, separately from political parties, in the US. I know I went onto mothering.com and backed away rapidly - it's a very different place.

Artichokeleaves · 24/03/2022 13:26

There are some people who specifically HATE the fact that this website has supported - what was it, over 6,000? - women to leave abusive and violent relationships.

I've seen a few abusive Exes let rip on the Relationships board late at night when they're furious that MN helped the partner to achieve her heartfelt desire to get away. The messages on MN that annoyed them the most?

You're not alone, this happens to other women. It isn't because you're odd or wrong or did something to cause it.

You don't have to accept this: if you're not happy, not consenting, if you're not being treated well and with equal consideration, then you deserve better. You are entitled to expect more of relationships than this.
Other people have to take equal responsibility for their choices and actions, it's not all on you all the time
You have resources, support and legal protections, here's how to find them, and the financial means to survive alone

Yes this is very scary but you have responsibilities and support to change this if you want to.

This, to someone who is getting their needs met by coercively controlling their provider? Is not helpful in any way. Empowering women, giving them ideas above their station, people to talk and get perspectives from, practical help and strategies - makes for a really badly behaved victim.

Because they are unable to barge in here, assert their manly authority and take control of our conversations they must destroy it.

I always thought the philosopher who commented that men often see women's spaces as 'terra nullis' nailed it. If it isn't occupied with being useful to men then it's just pointless, unused space waiting for a real purpose to come along. None of the crap that bothers women is ever in men's experience or on their radar, so for less sensitive men? Well it doesn't happen to them, so more or less just doesn't happen and doesn't matter.

QueenSue · 24/03/2022 13:27

Based on an analysis of posts on Mumsnet, we estimate that around 6000 women have been supported to leave abusive relationships in the last three years
This is amazing. MN is amazing.
But it's obviously going to upset certain types of beards.

DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 13:27

@BinBandit

If we women are so god damned awful, why do the menz want to be us?
They don't. They want to be a formless shifting confection of bullshit sexist stereotypes loosely based on some trite simulacra of femininity, often fuelled by porn tropes. They aren't actually lobbying for second class citizenship, substandard healthcare, the right to wipe arses and mop floors.
DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 13:28

I don't recommend trying to wipe arses and mop floors at the same time, btw - you know that thing where you pat your head and rub your tummy?
