Some bearded American pillocks are objecting to the idea of Mumsnetters talking about feminism. Hadley Freeman and other feminists are doing an excellent job of responding.

Some of the maundering on was about Mumsnet’s imminent demise due to bankruptcy (any day now, apparently) caused by advertisers withdrawing en masse because of the unbearable transphobia.

This was of course being discussed as if companies did so totally spontaneously rather than as the result of a coordinated campaign by TRAs. Oddly, for a group of people who are so keen on “not renewing a contract” having a very distinct meaning, that aspect is being overlooked too. How odd. Not as odd, of course, as the failure to mention companies choosing to keep advertising on the site despite being told to stop it at once.

Oh & “Mumsnet Recommends…” definitely totally is practically extinct. (That said, it wouldn’t surprise me if [at least] one of the von Quatschbarts of this world has a little spreadsheet of MNR products Hmm )

They’re playing some sort of weird game of whack a mole with people / media that they disagree with, to have it shut down.

It may have worked with AC on Reddit, getting GC subreddits closed down. But that hideously backfired to a degree when the lengths Reddit went to to protect AC were uncovered.

However, their cancelling campaign didn’t work with JKR. It didn’t work with Wild Womyn Workshop. It will not work with MN.

ScreamingMeMe · 25/03/2022 07:32

I’d take a wild guess that JP is not a happy bunny today. They spend a lot of time, pretty much every day, raging away mostly to their self (not a huge amount of interaction from others).

And one little Twitter thread explodes as a huge neon arrow directing people over to Mumsnet - priceless!

JP is one of our self-proclaimed monitors, and frequently posts screenshots taken from her. To, as you, say, little interaction.

JP is likey fuming that the beardy bros have garnered far more attention than JP, and that it's having the opposite affects (piss-taking and signposting new people to MN) to those JP would like.

Ultimately it boils down to this - women are the gatekeepers to the children. If you want unfettered access to the children, for whatever reason, you need to discredited the mums. If you can prove that the mums are all crazy/hysterical bigots who, then no one will listen to them when they object to children being medicalised, when they are overtly sexualised, when we object to the boys in girls changing rooms or sports, when we say “no” to adult males sharing sleeping spaces with young girls on Guide/Scout trips.

Ultimately we are the canaries in the mine, and we ain’t going to stop singing.

@CompleteGinasaur

OMG! I just googled, and Weetabix are Aussie! As you were..
They certainly are. But we call them ‘Weetbix’ and don’t need another syllable for their wheaty goodness.

I mean, as a kid I was sent to school with a Weetbix vegemite sandwich. Yum!

(Yes, vegemite sandwiched between two Weetbix. Mum did try with butter too but the heat on my school bag in the ‘port racks’ made a huge mess on 38 degree (c) days. Whereas, vegemite didn’t melt.)

This. We're not going away.

The horror! The horror! Make it stop, please.

Good lord, that’s actually a rival for the hot weetabix banana abomination, that will forever be a legend round these parts.

Helleofabore · 25/03/2022 08:48

It very tasty! And very healthy!

She also made the best milo tarts! It is quite amazing what you find in the QCWA cookbooks. All about making every last cent go a long way and when you live an hour’s drive to the nearest store, you get creative!Grin

Helleofabore · 25/03/2022 08:48

I wish I got her recipe for milo tarts. Sad

Women are still dealing with the shadow of being the perceptions people have of us and not who we are. We're dealing with the social consequences of being gaslighted on a staggering scale and having gendered roles thrust upon us to our great detriment.

As PPs astutely remark, why are women who are concerned with safeguarding being labelled Nazis, transphobes and bigots if not to deter others from speaking up? Why are people concerned with the right to civic dissent and misgivings about the creep of the social credit systems being cast as enemies of progress and society?

Jean Hatchet reported an exchange she had in Sept. 2018 (iirc, it was after a WPUK event):

Woman last night : “really it’s a shame you all have to waste your time on the trans issue when there’s so much to do in feminism”

No. There isn’t. All the rest depends on this. If men can say they are women and women have to believe them - they killed feminism. It’s over.

When men take the word “woman” from women and use it for themselves it is the most aggressive collective act of male violence against women and girls you will see in your lifetime.

These men know .... oh yes they know... that if we can’t define “woman” ... we can’t name our oppressors “male”. We can’t fight them. We can’t overthrow them.

Let this pass and it’s over women. The whole game is up.

Fight now. For feminism and for your lives as women.

Certain people think 'women really talk about this issue a lot on MN' is a winning argument.

Yes, women are significantly affected by this issue, and the women see this, because the women aren't stupid.

EdithStourton · 25/03/2022 09:00

Yep. That's it in a nutshell.

I've just caught up on this thread. Thank you for LOLs and @turbonerd, I'm so glad you made it through.

It's ok, we can put up a police cordon & tape off the area so nobody needs to stumble onto something unmentionable.

"Move along people, nothing to see here, move along..."

Helleofabore · 25/03/2022 10:01

Me: Aw mum! Why is there a police cordon around my school today?

Mum: Well darl, it is a crime of Weetbix against humanity. And all Aussie kids are implicated! So, until the paradigm shifts away from Weetbix sangers for lunch or smoko, the Weetbix police won’t let you in!

Me: awwww! Cool! I get to stay home? Can I have tinned beetroot sangers instead though? In the heat, by the end of the day my lunch box looks like starsky and hutch had a shoot out!!

( it was the 70s/80s after all)

Helleofabore · 25/03/2022 10:04

Cos Aussie kids are Weetbix kids!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/03/2022 10:04

Lang would probably have mixed tinned beetroot with the Weetabix.

WickedStepmomNOT · 25/03/2022 10:08

At least some say it like it is: Women's rights activist scorches this 'sinister' part of the left

This. Again and again and again. I am dealing, on another board, with two women who call themselves feminists yet can't see this, which is so ruddy obvious to me it's poking me in the eye.

Ultimately it boils down to this - women are the gatekeepers to the children.

We're also gatekeepers to ourselves - as an example, how many lesbians are being told that they are obliged to have sex with a person with a penis otherwise they're transphobic? How many have been targeted under the horrors of the "breaking the cotton ceiling" ideas? The gaslighting, bullying and silencing is also aimed at ensuring unfettered access to women and erasing our rights to consent, to close ourselves away in women-only spaces if we want or need to, and to the freedom of speech, thought and association.

Calennig · 25/03/2022 13:12

women are the gatekeepers to the children.

Given the shear number of high profile safeguarding scandels we've had in the UK - Rochdale and all the others, BBC and Savile and others, Sodem murders involving school support staff - and all the rest which are in our national press often for months and do sear themsleves across our colletive conciousness and how frequent concern were raised and not dealt with - I suspect MN and safeguarding awareness just reflects UK society and UK parenting concerns.

Also suspect it's just easier to blame a predominately female website than try and understand UK society.

I don't think I was ever taught about suffragettes in school or about the equal pay act and fight but I certainly picked up idea that our rights were hard won and a bit about them from TV,radio books odd new paper article. DD1 knew about then but found in a big anniversay year many of her year group had never heard of them.

If they don't know that even in our society women's rights aren't a given and were fiercely fought for perhaps that's why the don't see the implications to losing words like woman and female.
