Some bearded American pillocks are objecting to the idea of Mumsnetters talking about feminism. Hadley Freeman and other feminists are doing an excellent job of responding.

@UniversalAunt

Well…’ Mumsnet is famously populated by far-right, religious groups and used to recruit and spread anti-lgbt+ rhetoric. They use women’s concerns, fears and past trauma to radicalise them. It’s also low key full of classist and racist tropes too.’

I’m so proud that MNetters are worthy of such notice that we attract our very own niche’d God Squads to keep us all on the straight & narrow. Grin

Yeah how funny is that Grin

Religious my arse. And the ‘who are you voting for?’ threads around election times always show a pretty strong majority for Labour (well maybe not anymore...)

These people probably think Marie Curie was only capable of thinking about laundry brands and cake recipes once she had children. They still don't realise their mother was only pretending when she used to let them believe they had really beaten her at noughts and crosses.

“Oxford Housewife Wins Nobel Prize”, “Nobel Prize for British Wife”… This is how the tabloids in the United Kingdom announced the awarding of the prestigious prize from the Swedish Academy to Dorothy Hodgkin in 1964.

I think we need to make a pitch to the “Oi Frog!” people for a new edition. I propose, if it’s aimed at educating the MRAs/TRAs, it be called “Oi Twat!”

Alternatively, if it’s to be a rallying call to GC women, I propose “Oi Viper!”

Now I've had time to read some of the Twitter thread. Despite it being started by some beardy bro's who only seem to want to talk to and respond to other beardy bro's I think it has some positives.

It's actually sparked one of the better twitter discussions on this topic. A lot more discussion is going rather than the usual flinging names. I think it's helpful for Americans and others outside of the UK to understand

-actual separation of church and state (bar NI)
-our political system,
-how 'left' our right wing is compared to both parties in the US
-our strong foundation of class analysis in left wing politics
-our feminist history and history of equality laws/employment laws

Obviously we are not a perfect country but women here have had fairly robust rights for a number of decades in comparison (NI & abortion as an exception).

I think there are some very foundational reasons as to why "TERF Island" is as it is that are perhaps easier to see from the inside.

I would also add that (small) geography has played a big part in women being able to connect and I suspect it was similar (though harder) in first and second wave too.

See also Mumsnet as the online version of that conectedness - which is why they get so mad about it. They may as well whine about our transport networks too because so many of us can zip up and down the country with relative ease to support one another.

NitroNine · 24/03/2022 18:01

I don’t know how many of you are of an age to be told - or perhaps more pertinently, had parents/grandparents who are/were of an age to tell you - that watching too much television will make your eyes go square &/or your brain deteriorate in some way, be that melting, turning to dust, or going to mush [like a soggy weetabix]. (Exit of brain tissue via ears &/or nose optional). Perhaps that some programmes were “chewing gum for the mind”?

Have to wonder if they were perhaps onto things with screentime generally & Weetabix brain (wet or dry) because I struggle to understand - & this is as someone whose brain is not Weetabix-y, but is Badly Behaved - how else people could Tweet some of the things they do.

It’s not a[n early] National Youth Choir rehearsal, so why are they so at ease with being Loud And Wrong?

The endless privilege on display is really somewhat nauseating. “Ooh, look at us making edgy jokes about how they’re Nazis!” I mean, it’s libellous not just wrong; but when you use that particular slur against a group full of women the actual Nazis would have executed; some of whom lost family in the Holocaust? That’s a special sort of disgusting behaviour.

On a lighter note, Shakespeare is trending alongside Mumsnet, Graham Linehan & Glinner, but sadly not because his TERFery is being acknowledged. Clearly Shakespeare’s not a TERF, but acknowledging biological sex etc gets people accused of it, so I was hoping to see some denunciations & demands. Terribly disappointing.

This royal throne of kings queens, this sceptered isle, This earth These TERFs of majesty, this seat of Mars Fry’s, This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of women, this little world, This precious stone set in the silver sea, Which serves it in the office of a wall Or as a moat defensive to a house, Against the envy of less happier lands… This blessed plot Mumsnet lot, this earth those TERFs, this their realm, this England the UK.

This needs to happen. I'd buy several copies.

Given how many 'Oi' books there are, I don't see why we can't have 'Oi Twat' AND 'Oi Viper'

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/03/2022 18:04

Less of the Weetabix talk, please.

ScreamingMeMe · 24/03/2022 18:06

Sisters radicalising misters (and making them get baffling tattoos).

@NitroNine I felt a bit emotional reading that!

DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 18:12

That all sounds great and very sensible, OvaHere, but none of it rhymes.

Just so I know the right outfit to order, are we the ones in aprons or the ones with cloven hooves?
NitroNine · 24/03/2022 18:25

@Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky

If you mean in a stirred-by-mangled-Shakespeare way rather than Distressed By Cereal That Should Not Be Named, Charles Parry thoughtfully provided a suitably anthemic score for it.

"A Tweet by senior Vox correspondent Zack Beauchamp has prompted a debate about gender identity discussions on online forums"

Twitter, I love that I'm supposed to know or care who this guy is.

Innit Grin

My first question was - who tf is he?

RobbieWeirdicht · 24/03/2022 18:33

Just checking in because I'd hate to be excluded from 'those pesky women' and welcome to our new American friends.

The poster upthread that mentioned a 'tax' on women purely to defend our rights is spot on. Most of us have donated our hard earned money to try to change outrageous rulings that if left unchallenged will see women back in the dark ages where we were seen as chattel.

DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 18:33

For our US visitors, I really like some of your vagina songs.

littlbrowndog · 24/03/2022 18:34

Am not a vet or a biologist

How would I know 😎

DomesticatedZombie · 24/03/2022 18:34

This, too.

👋
An ex-friend (beardy woke bloke - what a shock!) unfollowed me on Twitter because I followed someone he deemed a TERF. He would periodically put out threats that he would unfollow anyone who followed someone he considered unacceptable. He really didn't understand how controlling & weird that behaviour is either.
Good riddance!

MN has had a number of threads on this demand. Posters will provide a number of methods to deal with that ultimatum delivering controlling behaviour. These are usually tailored in the patenting forums as dealing with preschoolers, 4 to 6 year olds or teen bullying all need age appropiate responses.
In AIBU etc its how to deal with a CF and LTB.

I am here for FWR but I took out a premium prescription purely for the Relationships board. I am very lucky I am in a position to do this I know, and I have no idea what the benefits of premium are, but if I am able to support the women who get legal, financial, emotional and practical support from the Relationships board I'm very happy with that. I wish I'd known about MN when I left my dangerous and abusive relationship. I thought it was for mums! I know far better now.

Power to your collective elbows, MNetters!
