Are you put off booking a holiday in Scotland by the Marion Miller case and the Scottish police carping about stickers?

I know that the chances of being harassed by the police on holiday are minimal but the whole atmosphere: law changes, the SNP attitude to women, the police tweeting about stickers etc - would you really want to holiday in such a pool of chilling effects? It is really changing how I feel about Scotland (in the sense of those currently running it - I'm not blaming the average Scot obviously) and I know if I went there it would be on my mind all the time. Chilling effects do not equal a holiday feeling is what I am saying I guess.

Check out the hilariously non-specific reporting by Edinburgh Live, to the point that commenters on the accompanying Facebook post are a bit baffled by what the incident was about. I wonder why they haven't been more specific....

@MostlyNormalSometimesOdd

I live here too, have done for all my 52 years, and I’m afraid I don’t understand what you mean by “what’s been done to our democratic process”. The party who gain the most votes in democratically held elections have the majority in the Scottish Parliament, how can this be undemocratic?
Oh ha, ha, ha. The Scottish Green Party got 1.3% in the constituency vote and 8.1% in the regional vote and Sturgeon is now in thrall to them and dancing to wee Patrick's tune.

The combined votes of the 3 Unionist parties are around 60% of those who voted yet the separatist parties claim there is a majority for separatism.

I've lived in Scotland all my life and I've never been so depressed about the political situation.

I'm not even particularly gender critical but I see a society which is becoming increasingly intolerant for all the lip service paid to inclusiveness etc, etc.

Slightly better in the Edinburgh Evening News - Greene King launching an inquiry:

I'd offer her a job in a heartbeat if I ran a pub.

Waitwhat23 · 22/08/2021 20:17

@VeryLittleOwl that's a much more informative and balanced account and I'm very pleased they actually published the comments the bar manager made on Twitter. For anyone who hasn't seen them yet -

'Any terfs see this, I tried to be civil with you and you failed. You're the worst customers ever. You dinnae belong in pubs... or society... you made my staff and other customers uncomfortable. I hope you understand just how much normal society despises you.”

I've worked in bars. I would have been sacked for making a statement like that about customers.

littlbrowndog · 22/08/2021 20:39

Well the bar manager did call his customers cunts. On his Twitter feed

Good grief re Fiona Robertson’s response ShockShock It’s as if she’s tiptoeing on eggshells around a child having a tantrum, placating and cajoling….
PrincessNutella · 22/08/2021 21:41

Definitely. And it's not just that. It's the treatment of JK Rowling and the whole depressing woke attitude. I was there two years ago, but I won't be going again anytime soon!

littlbrowndog · 22/08/2021 21:51

I can't stop being astonished at this. This is a person who complains about a t* 'infestation'.

Where have we heard that kind of dehumanising rhetoric used before?

This is very worth a read.

littlbrowndog · 22/08/2021 23:07

I dunno arabella. Am trying hard to think of a country where this stuff could happen

Trying hard to think of this country

Ooooh it’s my country

LazyViper · 22/08/2021 23:14

Infestation Shock

Let’s remember the majority of the UK shares these women’s science-led beliefs.

How the hell does a bar manager feel comfortable using this language on a public Twitter feed? How have we got to this insane point?

ArabellaScott · 22/08/2021 23:16

'infestation' in particular, though, littl.

mashable.com/article/donald-trump-infested-dehumanizing-language-twitter

'In Sept. 2018, the company [Twitter] released a thoughtfully written blog post in which it outlined a new policy against dehumanizing language. It defined dehumanization as "language that treats others as less than human" and that occurs when "comparing groups to animals and viruses (animalistic), or reducing groups to a tool for some other purpose (mechanistic)."

Twitter cited research establishing "dehumanizing language as a hallmark of dangerous speech" and noted that "dehumanization can reduce the strength of restraining forces against violence." In other words, when you use dehumanizing language online, it contributes to the idea that some groups are less than human, which can facilitate violence in the real world. '

ArabellaScott · 22/08/2021 23:18

And people in politics are happy to support this person, Viper. That's really what gets me. Five police, on a Saturday night in Edinburgh. I can't believe there wasn't anything else to call on their attention.

littlbrowndog · 22/08/2021 23:20

Wow arabella.

That is true comparing women to an infestation

Should see my eyes squinting at how a person could write this way about women
@Cismyfatarse well educate me then. I want to know. Genuinely. Because i dont see what the posters on here are seeing. In day to day life i just see people going about their business so why would people need to be scared to come on holiday here.
Look at the post further up the thread from a poster whose husband is from the Middle East. See how normal life continues on the surface, even as a despotic government takes a tighter grip of the media and free speech. People continue working and shopping as they always did but no one dares say anything critical of the regime.

I wonder what was said in the phone call. I'd like to bet that the caller made out that there was a full on riot going on in the pub.
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 23/08/2021 00:29

Talking of that phone call to the police...

Ironic.
