Are you put off booking a holiday in Scotland by the Marion Miller case and the Scottish police carping about stickers?

I know that the chances of being harassed by the police on holiday are minimal but the whole atmosphere: law changes, the SNP attitude to women, the police tweeting about stickers etc - would you really want to holiday in such a pool of chilling effects? It is really changing how I feel about Scotland (in the sense of those currently running it - I'm not blaming the average Scot obviously) and I know if I went there it would be on my mind all the time. Chilling effects do not equal a holiday feeling is what I am saying I guess.

@AnyOldPrion

The atmosphere regarding Scottish politics on Twitter is genuinely beginning to cause me alarm.

When it comes down to what actually occurred, there is (so far) no evidence that shows who it was who started the row that resulted in the women being ejected, nor any demonstrating whether one side or the other was most or wholly at fault, or whether there is some blame to be attached on both sides.

But as soon as you read the Twitter comments by Meb it’s clear that the language used about the women is utterly inappropriate and that Meb’s words strongly suggest that this is an aggressive and abusive individual. The unsavoury nature of this person is further demonstrated by a very brief timeline check.

But in the face of no independent evidence whatsoever, there are Scottish politicians rushing to say they support Meb. Either they are so careless that they haven’t checked out who they’re supporting, or worse, they will support anyone who stands against the women who are supporting women’s rights. And people who will support anyone, despite plenty of evidence that they are disagreeable (to put it mildly) are truly in so deep that they are unable to see what’s staring them in the face.

This stuff is so awful that it’s still hard to get my head around, even though it’s happening over and over. I just don’t recognise the society I grew up in any more.

That’s it old prion.

Politicians.

Untrustworthy in Scotland

Why would they not like women in their own country anymore

SpringCrocus · 23/08/2021 23:40

Using the word TERF has been ruled by a judge as hateful, saying "Women are women, its not possible to change sex" has been ruled as legal. Holding so called GC beliefs has been ruled legal.

I used to love visiting Scotland multiple times a year, for both business and pleasure.

Like fuck I'd go there now.

And as for this latest debacle in the bar, omg so much appalling behaviour.

I hope the women take legal action.

MrsJuliaGulia · 24/08/2021 16:51

I would think that the average Scot has no idea this is all going on beneath the surface. However the issue of children as young as 4 being able to change gender ID without parents’ knowledge had a fair amount of mainstream press attention to the extent that said average Scot might cause some of them to dig a bit deeper.

Tbh Ireland is the same. Self identification over there is actually Law, I believe. I’ve had conversations with friends over there know nothing about it, nor do they care. (None of them have heard of Barbie Khardashian or are likely to encounter someone like that in their lives)

Where? Online or actually in Scotland? Unless you're walking around dodgy neighbourhoods that most Scots would probably avoid, I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. Most English people go to tourist places anyway where Scots are more than used to English people. You're making it sound like you're going to walk around politically unstable areas in Belarus XD

@EarthSight I have to agree with you - there's huge amounts of English people in Edinburgh in particular and all parts of Scotland are well used to visitors coming up for a holiday from England.

I can possibly imagine unpleasant anti English sentiment during political discussions online or in spectacularly rough areas, but not just when you're walking around on holiday.

I've been a Scot living in England with all the 'jokes' about leeches and 'Jocks' but that wouldn't stop me going on holiday there.

EarthSight · 25/08/2021 11:12

@Waitwhat23 I would guess it's statistically more common for the average Scot to have worked with an English person than the other way around. The population disparity makes this more likely (so a greater number of Scots are either living in England, or are currently know or work with and English person in Scotland that the other way around). Sometimes I think makes a difference when it comes to inflaming existing preconceptions. I'm not talking about the above poster, but more generally.

I'm not sure what the law is in Scotland at the moment. If someone living in England had a very prominent feminist account discussing trans ideology and women's rights, I don't know what that would mean if someone made a complaint about them whilst they were visiting Scotland.

I wouldn't however, be concerned about Scots chasing English people around with baseball bats, especially in all the areas the average English tourists would like to go. They must welcome thousands upon thousands of English tourists every year.

EarthSight · 25/08/2021 11:13

or currently know or work with an English person in ratio to their own population*

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2021 11:25

Scots chasing English people around with baseball bats

Never yet seen that happen.

Interesting point. I suppose (and I don't have any legal knowledge so this is me just surmising) that if a general complaint against their online comments was made while they were in Scotland, it would be dealt with under the English legal system as they are normally resident there. However, if they walked into an Edinburgh bar wearing a 'Women won't wheesht' (or more likely) 'Adult Female Human' t-shirt, it would be under the Scottish legal system (as ridiculous as it is that the idea that t-shirts and stickers with non sweary, non violent content are now seen as a 'hate crime' - Kirkcaldy Police being a prime example of this).

KittenKong · 25/08/2021 12:01

I’m going to get a T-shirt that says ‘Auld female human’... (just saying). Will get one for each of my sisters too.

One of the women asked to leave was wearing a #NoThankYou t-shirt. Try one of those?

Enough4me · 25/08/2021 21:28

I've ordered a picture from Birdy Rose, not sure what I'll do with it, but I like it and she really needs support at the moment... reading her stress on Twitter there are TWA who wish her pain.

I am put off visiting Scotland due to the trans rule the earth issues, but have high respect for the feminists fighting a hard fight for sex based rights.

Enough4me · 27/08/2021 15:03

Picture arrived, it's great and I'm happy to support BR. May get a Tshirt next.
