FFS re. Hilaria & Alec Baldwin and normalisation of surrogacy

The Baldwins, a baby-hungry 'Spaniard' and rich Hollywood male, have had a sixth (sixth!) child six months after having their fifth. Apparently by surrogacy, well it wasn't carried by her obviously. Which means they implanted an embryo or embryos into some poor womb-holder while she was already heavily pregnant with their fifth child.

Why? FFS. I just don't understand it. Originally surrogacy was sold as solution to the utter misery of infertility and I feel a great deal of sympathy with this. But when it becomes the go-to of extremely wealthy families who already have numerous children (cf Kim Kardashian, Robbie Williams et al), then its exploitative and transactional nature is exposed.

I can't bear the way it's become so normalised to use women like ovens. Stop call it carrying a baby, like they're handbags. It's growing a baby from a microscopic dot to a newborn.

I have to say I was massively Hmmat hearing about this.

How narcissistic and messed up do you have to be to order a baby while you're literally pregnant with your 5th?! It shouldn't be allowed.

I thought pretty much the same thing when I saw this in the 'news'

zanahoria · 03/03/2021 15:11

Christiano Ronaldo did something similar

Londono · 03/03/2021 15:12

Unbelievably awful

Hoppinggreen · 03/03/2021 15:14

The pair of them sound fucking awful anyway so it’s not much of a surprise.

zanahoria · 03/03/2021 15:14

I guess now her career as a fake Spaniard is over she has more time to dedicate to posting pictures of her kids on the interner.

LouHotel · 03/03/2021 15:14

I thought the Ronaldo case was he was doing surrogacy alone and his girlfriend at the time happened to get pregnant. Different issue.

Yeah I find it unbelievable that at 6 months pregnant their thought process was to arrange another pregnancy. He's 70 years old!

Hoppinggreen · 03/03/2021 15:14

Suspect he had slightly different reasons

Hoppinggreen · 03/03/2021 15:15

Ronaldo I mean

zanahoria · 03/03/2021 15:18

"Who's the mother? She wasn't pregnant. She gave birth six months ago," one person wrote, to which Alec responded, "You should shut the f**k up and mind your own business."

That’s so messed up. People criticise big families like the Radfords so heavily but surely this is just as irresponsible. There should be laws about this ffs. It’s like when you read about pregnant women adopting (usually babies from abroad or of a different race so they can have some kind of massive —narcissistic— altruistic rainbow family 🙄).

PatienceVirtue · 03/03/2021 15:20

Apparently (realise I'm over invested here) there's speculation that they were desperate for another girl, so when they discovered that the fifth child was a boy, they decided to order up the preferred brand.

Actually writing that down it seems too awful even for these awful people. Whatever, I do feel sorry for the fifth child when he realises that even while pregnant with him, his parents had their eyes and wallet on the next one.

Number3BigCupOfTea · 03/03/2021 15:21

It was a surrogacy pregnancy? wow. I didn't think it was long since their last child but hadn't realised it was only six months.
She's given birth five times so it is hard to understand. Either, what's one more time, or (more to the point) five children is enough children.

The timing is odd as well. They must have had two children in 'utero' 6 months ago.

PatienceVirtue · 03/03/2021 15:21

And yes have always been agog at Ronaldo and what his girlfriend thought when she got pregnant at the same time as some random woman was carrying another random woman's eggs to batch cook some twins for him.

EachandEveryone · 03/03/2021 15:32

Oh its definitely because they wanted a girl.

All the A listers are at it. Its like they want the experience of carrying their own but dont want to do it for the next one like SJP. At least Lucy Liu was honest and said she didnt know when she would beable to take a break from working 😮

Surely theres no way these people have more fertility issues than us normal everyday folk. And all the rich gay couples its like a god given right for them. people.com/parents/celebrities-who-have-used-surrogates/?slide=000c3663-430c-4072-9112-8f0d1141a4be#000c3663-430c-4072-9112-8f0d1141a4be

HollywoodTease · 03/03/2021 15:33

The rumour mill says that Hilaria suffered a loss before she became pregnant with their 5th, so when they decided to try again they used the surrogacy option as a backup.

Which would make a kind of sense apart from the timing. If that was the case you would expect the babies to be born only a couple of weeks apart, or the surrogate to give birth first. A 5-month gap is just weird.

As if buying babies and using women as incubators isn't bad enough......

Number3BigCupOfTea · 03/03/2021 15:52

I wonder why she announced this. If I were her I would have stayed inside for a while longer, come off all sm. Waited until nobody was bothering to count the months between her children's ages.

It’s because none of it is about the child’s best interests.
WeRoarSometimes · 03/03/2021 16:23

In a way I find it more worrying when a couple without fertility issues (they've had 5 babies) chooses to find a surrogate mother to nourish and grow a child for them. I guess it is because they can pay and they probably didn't consider there was an issues of ethics.

Angelica789 · 03/03/2021 16:41

She can barely have had time to harvest her eggs in between her pregnancies and miscarriage. It’s all really weird.

SunsetBeetch · 03/03/2021 18:41

Agree with this; it's sick.

OhHolyJesus · 03/03/2021 18:48

I think she would have had to have frozen her eggs a fair while before the pregnancy, after the miscarriage main 2019? Not that I believe this Richardson-Mook character.

"Richardson-Mook pointed out that this is not an easy decision for parents and that it takes parents on average about 50 months to work through the surrogacy process.
If this was the case for Hilaria and Alec, then they would have delved into surrogacy long before she became pregnant with Eduardo."

Clymene · 03/03/2021 18:49

I think this will increasingly become the norm. 'Too posh to push' will be replaced by 'too important to take the risk of gestating your own child'.

Someone will probably come up with something snappier. Too busy to bump?

Incidentally, I have had a c section. I have nothing against them before anyone jumps on me.

Paying other women to take the risks of pregnancy and deliberately subjecting your own child to trauma is I suspect going to come back to bite them on the arse one day.

megletsecond · 03/03/2021 18:50

There was a blind gossip about this yesterday. I'd been wondering who it was.

SmokedDuck · 03/03/2021 19:11

I wonder if AB's age might be a factor in their thinking.

I suspect that when we see these things with celebrities wealth is just a huge factor in so many ways. Another couple might think, maybe new babies at 70 could be unwise? But it's not really an issue financially for them.
