Jameela and Josie backing away

I’ve checked as much as I can and apparently Jameela Jamil and Josie Long (I’m not sure who she is but lots of followers) have deleted their tweets supporting Mermaids. Jameela also seems to have removed her unpleasant tweet(s) to JK Roeling (I don’t think I’ve missed them on the searches) An interesting development.

I got annoyed with Josie Long when she 'presented' a radio programme called 'Shortcuts' in her breathy, be kind voice. The programme absolutely epitomised 'Woke' - all style over substance and very few of the contributors had anythng real to say. There was also rather an over representation of trans voices.

Yikes!! I've just noticed that I did a typo in JK Rowling's name in the original post! A thousand apologies - I am usually so good at proof reading Shock .

Yes, Jameela created iweigh. She's done a lot to fight the unhealthy diet drinks industry and the harm they do to women and girls. Despite her concerns however, she tore shreds out of Abigail Shrier for using her 'privilege' in such a bigoted way when she spoke to Joe Rogan and published Irreversible Damage. She has no qualms at all about the damage being done by an affirmation only approach that can involve drugs which cause lifelong problems Confused I guess she's just selecting which girls to worry about- and ignoring any that compromise her gender ideologies.

fatblackcatspaw · 11/08/2020 10:40

oh Shortcuts thats currently running second after The Listening Project in my most hated radio programme category. Third is You and Yours legazised moaning....

SerenityNowwwww · 11/08/2020 10:42

I always for the impression she was more ‘girls need to not be bullied by the beauty industry - take ME for example, I’m gorgeous, tall, fabulous...’.

However she backs people changing their bodies with medication and surgery though doesn’t she - if they feel that they are in the ‘wrong’ body - so how does she square that particular circle?

MrsJamin · 11/08/2020 10:54

Deborah Frances-White has definitely lived up to her "Guilty Feminist" name. I couldn't listen to that podcast after they went all TWAW, it negated anything good or funny that they said.

Who is she (too hot and lazy to duckduckgo her).

SunsetBeetch · 11/08/2020 11:14

I tried to archive the Mermaids feature on iweigh, but it's covered up by that pop-up note you get when you first visit the site. Here are some screenshots

I've mentioned before, I used to be big fan of Josie Long (she was a sort of scrappy indie comedian but has had lots of success in London etc), had supported her (going to all her shows etc) since very early on. Friends of friends are in her 'circle' etc. She had a great mix of childish humour with trying to genuinely be nice, promote mental health etc. Kids came along so I lost touch. Last time I went to one of her gigs Grace Petrie was supporting and no offence to Grace as a person but I find her music absolutely dire and I felt claustrophobic having to listen to it when I'd come to watch a comedy gig.

Anyway I was obviously disappointed to see how anti-women she'd become, or at least very uncritical with her trying to 'include' everyone. Surely any org such as Mermaids set up to work with extremely vulnerable children needs to be held to the highest standards so it's a bit gross to dismiss all criticism of how they operate (may I remind you, one of Mermaids took a trans woman to court to sue them, and it was thrown out, and the Mermaids person did not come off as particularly kind, inclusive or supportive with her comments) as bigoted.

So, now, I'm very interested as to whether she's changed her stance on Mermaids, and if so, why.

Jameela's on another level though!
I found it hilarious in that tweet in Kantastic's post she responds to Danielle Muscato's assertion that "If you think I am less of a woman because I don't fit your mental picture of what a woman "should" looks like you're a bigot"(paraphrased) with "Danielle is a woman, and this is a very old photo of her by the way... she looks nothing like this."

Facepalm because Danielle's whole point is it doesn't matter what Danielle looks like, yet Jameela's desperate to focus on exactly that!

MrsJamin · 11/08/2020 11:35

Deborah Frances-White is a comedian who runs the guilty feminist podcast, which has been running for a good few years and has many notable and/or famous women speakers, and also some men who think they have lady brains, which was totally acceptable to her. The cognitive dissonance is shocking. She has trans friends and so can't even think about the likelihood of being wrong. However... she is.

SerenityNowwwww · 11/08/2020 11:40

So she’s not an actual feminist then?

Needmoresleep · 11/08/2020 11:45

I think Jameela's background does matter. She went to an extremely exclusive girls private school in central London. (Posh exclusive, rather than academically selective.)

There is something about the privileged lecturing us ordinary plebs about acceptance etc, when we know full well they are never to end up sharing a prison cell or a women's refuge with a self identifying transwoman.

SunsetBeetch · 11/08/2020 11:47

Yes, bishopgiggles Grace Petrie is another one. I wonder if she has some influence on Josie?

That’s one dinner party I’d avoid like the plague. Can you imagine sitting around a table with that lot?

moptophairshop · 11/08/2020 11:52

I bought her Guilty Feminist book early on in my feminist journey. Right near the start she says how important it is to believe TWAW because... 'inclusive' and 'intersectional' which just left me thinking 'but why?' You're not explaining yourself and yet expecting me to make this huge leap which conflicts with what I know to be true. Left me with more questions than answers and taught me to focus on feminists who actually centre women. Up until then I had assumed that's what all feminists do, but apparently not.

bishopgiggles · 11/08/2020 11:53

Josie was using her platform to promote Grace iirc (nothing wrong with that at all, she was an up-and-coming lesbian artist) so I'm assuming a fair level of shared views! Tbf Grace is right, transphobia is bullshit. I think the question is as to what constitutes transphobia.

chunkyrun · 11/08/2020 11:53

If jj does a public u turn she'll have my respect. Instead It'll be head in the sand

SerenityNowwwww · 11/08/2020 12:00

No respect from me.

But I am a complete cowbag who holds a grudge. I am very very slow to anger but once someone has overstepped the line, that’s it. She could become a certified saint and I’d still only hold her in contempt.

I’m sure she’s devastated!

MrsJamin · 11/08/2020 12:01

@moptophairshop I really enjoyed the podcasts, they were genuinely funny but I couldn't keep listening to her preaching her own brand of feminism when I knew she thought men could become women by saying they had ladybrain or the essence of a woman or however she thinks transwomen are women. I have no idea how women can say that including men as women is the same as including disabled or black women as women. It's disgusting that someone can get away with that as so-called intersectional feminism. Makes my blood boil.

SerenityNowwwww · 11/08/2020 12:02

So they really believe that they could become a man? Do they??? Shouldn’t be let out alone really...

LizziesTwin · 11/08/2020 12:12

The lack of logical thinking is so annoying.

Men need to expand the bandwidth of what it is to be male. Women & girls aren’t collateral damage.

QuimReaper · 11/08/2020 12:23

Also paws I am fantasising about neighbouricide too. I'm trying to work in the garden and some fucker is playing some kind of repetitive music a couple of doors down which is like having someone thump repeatedly on the side of my head, they must be trashing the peace for at least six households Angry People are so damn selfish!

moptophairshop · 11/08/2020 12:41

@MrsJamin I totally agree and the lack of critical analysis is worryingly obvious when these intersectional arguments are put forward. I can see how it might be tempting for those who simply wish to be kind and inclusive but surely any level of consideration about what that line of argument actually does to support women and girls should be enough to at least pause for thought. Prominent figures like Jameela ( 1 million + followers) should be asking themselves before they put messages out there 'what does this message actually do to help the rights of women and girls?'

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 11/08/2020 14:00

You know I really hate identity politics and intersectionality. The idea that one group deserve more than another or are more oppressed than another. I hate there is no nuance in play. For example, because I am black/gay/etc my views are this, this and this. Any other views are not tolerated. There's no accounting for the very different lives that people within the groups all with their individual personalities, thoughts and feelings. They may share certain aspects of their lives but there's probably much more that they don't share.
