Jameela and Josie backing away

I’ve checked as much as I can and apparently Jameela Jamil and Josie Long (I’m not sure who she is but lots of followers) have deleted their tweets supporting Mermaids. Jameela also seems to have removed her unpleasant tweet(s) to JK Roeling (I don’t think I’ve missed them on the searches) An interesting development.

If I were running Stonewall I would be very worried about the level of conflict and thus reputational damage caused by #nodebate.

I would look to be more conciliatory. As a first step I would look at what issues cause the most problems and would identify:

  1. Putting children on lifetime experimental medication.
  2. Women's sport (its the thing most men get.)
  3. Safeguarding of vulnerable women and of girls including settings such as prisons and refuges.

First step. Cut Mermaids loose.

SerenityNowwwww · 14/08/2020 14:50

They are no longer fit for purpose. They need to just go now. What a tarnished brand.

fatblackcatspaw · 14/08/2020 16:35

@Porridgeoat

I used to love the guilty feminist in its hay day but last time I listened to the podcast it was awful. Just gender politics and pushing an agenda that made me feel uncomfortable. And I’m just a typical lefty female. I haven’t listened to it since.
a friend really pushed The Guilty feminist at me about a year ago... glad I resisted...
Porridgeoat · 14/08/2020 22:11

Such a shame the podcast was used as a vehicle for preachy gender politics.

MrsJamin · 14/08/2020 23:07

Oh goodness, for more gender identity nonsense from a comedian, read this (I couldn't even finish it, it's so long) - sofie was on the guilty feminist podcast too and refused to do comedy gigs in venues that didn't have all gender toilets. Hmm It's just all so maddening that people see is something really wrong with how they perceive themselves compared to society's expectations of them but come to a completely odd solution to the problem.

fatblackcatspaw · 15/08/2020 00:55

gosh that seems to been removed.... she used to do good stuff around weight but I assume now wokidiot?

MrsJamin · 15/08/2020 06:06

Blimey that's bizarre that it has been removed, it couldn't possibly have been because of this thread, surely?

MrsJamin · 15/08/2020 06:19

Ah somehow the link got changed, this is it.

Needmoresleep · 15/08/2020 07:46

"I am also going to be on a lot of 'inspirational women' lists and 'lady comedy nights' because I know that what they usually mean is 'non-cis-men'"

Hmm
teawamutu · 15/08/2020 09:04

Read it. Skimmed, anyway, couldn't bear to do more.

Internalised misogyny is an awful, awful thing.

risefromyourgrave · 15/08/2020 10:47

@MrsJamin

Ah somehow the link got changed, this is it.
How on earth can she say she’s a feminist if she rejects being female? She hated being female so much she had to wear trousers all the time. Hmm As I am a female I frolic around in dresses all the time, none of those horrid leg covering monstrosities for me.
JoysOfString · 15/08/2020 10:53

Just tried to read that. The circular, illogical nonsense of it is just so exhausting. Why are perfectly bright, cognitively competent people so confused? How can you grow up in the modern world and not have clocked that how you feel about trousers and dresses has no bearing on being a woman?

I know people want to jump on a woke bandwagon for brownie points but it makes no sense! I feel like I’m so past it and last-century for even expecting or wanting things to make sense...

DeaconBoo · 15/08/2020 11:03

@Needmoresleep

"I am also going to be on a lot of 'inspirational women' lists and 'lady comedy nights' because I know that what they usually mean is 'non-cis-men'"

Hmm

So she expects trans men to be on these lists as well!? What? Offensive much?
CheeryTreeBlossom · 15/08/2020 18:20

That link just Confused she knows she's not a woman because wearing dresses makes her feel awful and trousers not? From someone who hosted "the guilty feminist" podcast? Surely that women can wear trousers all the time and still be women is feminism 101?

And the question about if she would be fine being a women if men could wear dresses? Lots of traditional outfits for men in many cultures involve "skirt" like pieces, kilts, lunghis etc.
There is a lot of internalised misogyny in that statement.

I too enjoyed the guilty feminist at first, but had to stop listening to it because everytime they discussed exercise they felt guilty about it and Sophie would shame Debra for daring to mention it because it was so fat phobic.
Exercise is proven to be important to mental as well as physical health and I hardly think DFW talking about a yoga class is fatshaming all the listeners. Making women feel guilty for self care just seems like another stick to beat them with, and well, not very feminist.
It morphed from a fun podcast discussing everyday-sexism type things and empowering to preachy and shaming.

McDuffy · 15/08/2020 20:51

My first strike, for something pretty innocuous. Didn't get an email warning me from @mnhq, is that standard?

greennugget · 15/08/2020 21:20

@CheeryTreeBlossom - totally agree. 90% of what she says feels very familiar to me, and why I thought I was nonbinary for quite a while.

I hope she comes to a find something good and truthful about knowing you are female and being fairly at peace with that. I am much much happier now.

ItsLateHumpty · 16/08/2020 01:59

@McDuffy

My first strike, for something pretty innocuous. Didn't get an email warning me from *@mnhq*, is that standard?
If you got no email, then it should mean it’s just a deletion and not one of three strikes.

You can message MN and ask, sometimes they’ll be helpful and actually tell you what was contentious, but not always. Don’t argue with the mods too much though, because that can lead to a strike.

MrsJamin · 16/08/2020 06:47

@greennugget really glad you came to be at peace with your sex.

McDuffy · 16/08/2020 09:54

Thanks humpty 👍

SunsetBeetch · 17/08/2020 06:21

Wow. Just realised that this is the same Sofie Hagen eho actually has a thread on Kw Frs. Spoiler: it's not flattering.

Incidentally, I was thinking of starting a thread on "fat activism", but think it would probably turn into a bun fight.

MrsJamin · 17/08/2020 06:37

Yeah sofie has some strong opinions alright. I read some conflicting things like sofie doesn't believe in "health at every size" apparently but everything else I've read about sofie's stance on health and obesity says the same thing. Confused What world does sofie live in where you can decide not to be a woman and that you can decide to be fat and healthy? Does sofie also decide not to be held down by gravity too?

Clymene · 17/08/2020 06:46

I listen to the Fortunately podcast when I'm driving and I had to pull over to change to a new episode because they had Sofie on. God she's insufferable

IDanielRadcliffe · 17/08/2020 08:21

I’ve got as far as her being introduced, I haven’t decided whether to put myself through it or not!

Clymene · 17/08/2020 08:22

I recommend doing something else instead. For a comedian she is not remotely funny either

SunsetBeetch · 17/08/2020 08:43

I mean this kindly: she appears to have a number of issues.
