Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

To start off thread 2 - everyone saying the time was right for this to hit the news stands right after the Election was right!

Maya Forstater's Employment Tribunal case is, by virtue of JK Rowling's support, more popular in The Spectator than Boris Johnson by Boris Johnson, The Tories and The Labour Party!

MOST POPULAR in The Spectator

1. In just a few words, JK Rowling has changed the transgender debate (James Kirkup)

  1. Boris Johnson: Perhaps my campaign was ‘clunking’. But sometimes, clunking is what you need (Boris Johnson)
  2. We’ve just had the best decade in human history. Seriously (Matt Ridley)
  3. Keir Starmer looks and sounds middle class precisely because he’s working class (Isabel Hardman)
  4. Let’s make David Lammy Labour’s next leader (Rod Liddle)
  5. A new leader won’t stop the far left’s domination of Labour (Nick Cohen)

I really love Ricky Gervais too - I mean, he just dgaf. No joke is off-limits to him, and so of course he was going to joke about Jenner, Yaniv etc.

But, he then comes out with a serious statement on twitter about how this is affecting women - and I am so pleased to see he really gets it. Not just some crap about "we eed a serious conversation" or "nastiness on both sides" - he totally sees what is being done to women.

Ricky Gervais....the gift that keeps on giving. I already think he is great due to being an animal lover.

fuckitywhy · 21/12/2019 16:08

Hah! Her response was very telling.

theflushedzebra · 21/12/2019 16:19

Oh I agree - you can tell a lot about a person from their treatment of animals.

And children.

Let's take a moment to think about how the trans movement treats children.

EvenSupposing · 21/12/2019 16:20

I saw someone likening transwomen to adoptive parents. You would never saw that a parent with an adopted child wasn't their parent. BUT correct me if I am wrong, but isn't adoption a difficult and testing process where there has to be some legal confirmation first after considerable assessment of a person's suitability before they are allowed to be an adopted parent. Which is regularly checked and supervised.
The analogy doesn't work.

Actually it's a brilliant analogy. I am my dd's mum. She knows that. But when I take her to the doctor and the doctor says 'any history of X in the family?' I don't say 'no doctor'. I say, 'actually she is adopted and we are not biologically related so I don't know'.

Is that bloody painful? Being reminded that i am not her birth mother? Yes it is.

Do I shout at the doctor for triggering me? No I don't.

I would give anything to be her birth mother but I am not and can't ever be. I can't change reality because reality upsets me.

It's a great analogy. It just proves the opposite of what they want it to.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 21/12/2019 16:21

Great post, @even.

Tocopherol · 21/12/2019 16:23

Rules about to change? How would that mean he has to stay married to you? Last time I got into a, ahem, discussion over this the other person was furious that a spouse can 'stop' a transition and use it as a reason to divorce. Or similar.

Sorry, I'm somewhat behind on this. I was pretty on board with the transgender stuff until I saw that clownfish nonsense doing the rounds and started seeing this crap about always centering transwomen in feminism Hmm

EvenSupposing · 21/12/2019 16:27

And do people online spend a lot of time telling adoptive parents 'you're not their real mum/dad'? Yup.

And have I ever had South Yorkshire police investigate that as a hate crime or told anyone to DIAF or threatened to 'kerb stomp' anyone? Well I think you can see how this rhetorical line of questioning is going Grin

YourOpinionIsNoted · 21/12/2019 16:37

It's almost as if I can read your mind, even.

I am now identifying as psychic.

SlightlyWizened · 21/12/2019 16:50

Just popping on to say I joined twitter yesterday to like JK's tweet and follow a whole bunch of people like her and Ricky.

Dangerfloof · 21/12/2019 16:56

The new law allows for trans people who are already married to gain gender recognition without having to get divorced, which is extremely welcome and long overdue. However, because there remains a distinction between “same-sex” and “opposite-sex” marriages, the spouse also must consent. The trans person cannot gain gender recognition until either the spouse consents – or they get divorced. That's what campaigners call the "spousal veto"

How many fingers am I holding up?

Dangerfloof · 21/12/2019 16:58

Sorry the above is for
@Tocopherol
So not really stay married whatever it was hyperbole from me

HarrietThePi · 21/12/2019 17:05

I think this was mentioned on the first page, but regarding celebrities and public figures who have stayed silent so far, like Charlie Brooker, I feel like the time for them to say something is kind of overdue... I can see why they aren't and feel their silence on it speaks in its own way..but come on, now's the time surely.

EvenSupposing · 21/12/2019 17:09

Yeah charlie brooker is well overdue. David Mitchell. Ben whotsit - the science guy. Sandi and Noel - gender non-conformist both. Whathsherface who elected herself queen of feminism a while back but seems to have had her mouth sewn shut on this one - How to be a Feminist woman.

shedquarters · 21/12/2019 17:10

Yes high profile people should be speaking out - but more importantly politicians and scientists should stop being such effing cowards and put a stop to this now.

OldCrone · 21/12/2019 17:14

The trans person cannot gain gender recognition until either the spouse consents – or they get divorced.

Since the marriage is between two people who both have rights, the non-transitioning spouse shouldn't be forced into a same-sex marriage without her consent (in nearly all cases the transitioning person is male and the non-transitioning person is female).

Datun · 21/12/2019 17:17

Placemarking

theflushedzebra · 21/12/2019 17:23

I'm fairly disgusted with Ben Goldacre and Robin Ince - who have made their living talking about science vs bad science, but who have failed to come out in support of both science and women on this one.

Shouting the mantra "TWAW" at people is really just "how many fingers am I holding up Winston?" - they must see it.

Especially when the ominous "Repeat after us, Transwomen are women" was projected onto London buildings.

EvenSupposing · 21/12/2019 17:36

Goldacre. That's it.

Plenty of time to get his cat a PhD to piss Gillian McShit-in-a-tub off. None to tweet about this massive attack on scientific thought. Nice work Ben.

drspouse · 21/12/2019 17:43

@BlackberryViolet I knit too, have just checked Ravelry, all about how awful the UK is, how they always knew she had dreadful politics.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/12/2019 17:46

Yeah, I remember back in the olden days when I was naive and trusting and I was just waiting for Goldacre to talk about it because I assumed he would get to it sooner or later, being a fearless critic of bad science and all.
Tbh though, the fact he hasn't is probably the reason I had forgotten him (I couldn't think which Ben you meant either) - when someone's brand involves a certain kind of integrity and they turn out not to have that integrity after all, you lose interest.

Isbutteracarb · 21/12/2019 17:46

EvenSupposing · 21/12/2019 17:48

Exactly that Fitzdotteral

HorseWithNoBlueHair · 21/12/2019 18:02

I used to like Goldacre, but then I used to like the Guardian.

How times have changed.
