Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

To start off thread 2 - everyone saying the time was right for this to hit the news stands right after the Election was right!

Maya Forstater's Employment Tribunal case is, by virtue of JK Rowling's support, more popular in The Spectator than Boris Johnson by Boris Johnson, The Tories and The Labour Party!

MOST POPULAR in The Spectator

1. In just a few words, JK Rowling has changed the transgender debate (James Kirkup)

  1. Boris Johnson: Perhaps my campaign was ‘clunking’. But sometimes, clunking is what you need (Boris Johnson)
  2. We’ve just had the best decade in human history. Seriously (Matt Ridley)
  3. Keir Starmer looks and sounds middle class precisely because he’s working class (Isabel Hardman)
  4. Let’s make David Lammy Labour’s next leader (Rod Liddle)
  5. A new leader won’t stop the far left’s domination of Labour (Nick Cohen)

But we can opt out of sex-based oppression right?

Of course, just dye your hair blue and call yourself they/them

KettlePolly · 21/12/2019 13:17

Well quite FlyingOink I'm looking forward to a lovely holiday to Saudi. There will be no need to cover up my manboobs will there?

If only the Chinese knew choosing a sex was optional they wouldn't have had to kill all those baby girls would they?

It's bad enough that men don't often recognise sex based oppression. It's sad that plenty of women don't either. The patriarchy is very efficient.

ThePonderer · 21/12/2019 13:19

You are an informative and witty bunch and even find time to keep the street violence wing going......

Getting their conservative boyfriends and husbands to do the murdering for them was a real time-saver.

Itsigginingtolookalotlikexmas · 21/12/2019 13:22

I have dug out my HP socks and ordered some Hogwarts "merch" on amazon last night.

XXMansplainShieldActive · 21/12/2019 13:24

Didn't see if this has already been mentioned but Andrew Sullivan's piece in NYMag's Intelligencer is a good read.

nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/12/andrew-sullivan-what-we-know-about-trump-going-into-2020.html

Resisting this authoritarianism of the left is as vital to our liberal democracy as resisting the authoritarianism of the right. Yes, I stand with Maya. And, no, this is not a drill. It’s a fight for freedom of thought and empirical reality.

ArranUpsideDown · 21/12/2019 13:30

find time to keep the street violence wing going......

What larks. I'd forgotten about the street violence wing.

OldCrone · 21/12/2019 13:30

So many “biologists” crashing onto Twitter to say “Lo! Allow me to explain something about biological sex! It isn’t binary ACTUALLY, it’s VERY complicated...”

Which usually ends up with "DSDs exist, therefore people can change sex". They never explain exactly how people change sex or at what point a man actually becomes a woman.

breakfastpizza · 21/12/2019 13:38

Andrew Sullivan nails it:

One of the long-held principles of the gay-rights movement has been that it’s wrong to fire someone just because they’re gay. Now, one of the principles of the LGBTQ movement is that it’s fine to fire someone if they disagree in the slightest with every claim of gender ideology.

This shift from a “live and let live” to a “do what I say or else” movement is one reason I don’t identify with this activism any more.

He's a conservative commentator, but he's gay and thinks the current republican regime are extreme right-wing fanatics.

FlamingoAndJohn · 21/12/2019 13:42

I’ve just had a hour long discussion with DH with him ‘explaining’ to me about how there are however many different genders etc.

I agreed that people should be free to live how they want, and I agreed that there are very girly women and ‘masculine’ women and vice versa and that this might be to do with their chromosomes or hormones rather than the presence of a penis or vagina.
He agreed that people with penises sometimes need to be separate from people with vaginas; that people who give birth and have periods are treated less favourably by society.
So I don’t know how he expected this to pan out. I got up half way through to put some washing on. He missed the irony.

shedquarters · 21/12/2019 13:57

If only the Chinese knew choosing a sex was optional they wouldn't have had to kill all those baby girls would they?

It would also sort out the dilemma of should you find out the baby's sex at the scan. Meaningless now.

Tocopherol · 21/12/2019 14:08

I remember reading the bit in HP were she said muggles can't go to Hogwarts. Outrageous and heartbreaking. Needed therapy for decades.

Tocopherol · 21/12/2019 14:12

Also, I have a biology degree and I'm constantly having sex "explained" to/at me by people on Facebook who have never expressed any interest in any other biology subject the entire time I've known them.

shedquarters · 21/12/2019 14:23

What is very concerning is the religious nature of the belief in the non-binary umbrella among people, especially the young.
It is a simple faith based belief without the requirement of empirical proof.
It has a strong moral element to the belief, including that non-believers are immoral heretics, who need attacking, pitying and educating.
The public shaming and vilification of non-believers.
The climate of fear and silence amongst those who should be/best placed to challenge this. (scientists/academics/politicians etc..).

It's the bloody Spanish Inquisition.

Itsigginingtolookalotlikexmas · 21/12/2019 14:24

@FlamingoAndJohn maybe wait till you are having sex and announce half way through you now identify as a man? (Or any of 72+ genders you choose). See if he's as keen then.

Breakfastat · 21/12/2019 14:30

Marking my place here. Twitter is a very dark place and the abuse is staggering. Please keep sharing the good, supportive, funny stuff.

Scarscar · 21/12/2019 14:36

It's exactly the Spanish Inquisition. Different time but same mindset. These types have always been around.

KnickersandGnomes · 21/12/2019 14:47

Just popping in to say that I 'liked' JK's tweet too and am horrified by the abuse that is being directed at her!

So much for all the talk of 'shy, delicate, sensitive' female penises blah blah when so many on Twitter have been telling her to suck/choke on their female penis. Such aggression rather proves why they should not be allowed into female only spaces tbh.

Sane transwomen who just want to quietly live and let live must be despairing at how the aggressive, loud minority are behaving just now.

NightLion · 21/12/2019 14:51

The witch-hunting of JK Rowling is a disgrace. All she did was defend a woman’s right to express an opinion on transgenderism. It’s so clear now: the trans movement is a menace to reason, liberty and women’s rights. We must oppose it, says Brendan O’Neill

Apologies if this has already been posted

YourOpinionIsNoted · 21/12/2019 15:05

Ah, found thread 2! (Been busying myself with Christmassy stuff this morning.)

So glad JK is standing firm.

What did Ricky Gervais tweet? I can't access the archived link near the start of the thread due to settings on my phone.

I'm feeling quite sad and very anxious today. Stuck my head above the parapet on FB yesterday and one of my close friends has today liked a TWAW post. I'm worried I will lose a valued friendship over this. The maddest thing is she's bisexual, you'd think she'd know the difference between male and female bodies pretty well. Also her wife and her had IVF to have their son - now why would they have had need donor sperm, surely one could just have identified as a man?

This shit is so depressing.

Dangerfloof · 21/12/2019 15:08

@FlamingoAndJohnmaybe wait till you are having sex and announce half way through you now identify as a man? (Or any of 72+ genders you choose). See if he's as keen then
Also remind him that now you are a man, he is now gay. And as you (I assume) are married and the rules are probably about to change, he has to stay married to you.

Isbutteracarb · 21/12/2019 15:10

Apologies if this has already been shared but this was on BBCScot9 last night: twitter.com/fairplaywomen/status/1208315003432054785?s=21

Waterandlemonjuice · 21/12/2019 15:16

Should we all write to JKR’s agent to show support? I’m so pleased she isn’t backing down. That Titania thread is funny!

BickerinBrattle · 21/12/2019 15:30

Biologists who assert sex is on a spectrum need to ask physicists the meaning of the word “spectrum.”

theflushedzebra · 21/12/2019 15:55

I don't think I've seen a more accurate (and less funny) meme as the woman gagged by a trans flag. It's totally how this feels.

BarbaraStrozzi · 21/12/2019 15:57

Just bought one of the Rowling/Galbraith books for a friend's Christmas. Small gesture, but worth it I feel.
