I am aware that there already long threads on this, but would anyone mind just giving me the basic information about what so many people are objecting to? Is it just that she has attended an event run by a Right Wing organisation? Or is there more?
It just looks like a pile-on by left-wingers on my twitter feed.
In all events, it's a TRA dream - divide and rule.
Again, before anyone flames me, I know that there are 2 long threads on this, but I gave up the will to read them after people going on about breakfasts for post after post.

The confrontation with McBride is a Twitter Moment now. It's completely one-sided - not asking why it happened or what was said. Hopefully some people will try to find out.

donquixotedelamancha · 31/01/2019 13:59

Pussyfooting around them doesn’t help. In fact, it actually makes things worse

I agree with that strongly. I am supportive of the likes of Man Friday's stunts to get attention to the issue. I don't think we should be tribal by blanket refusing co-operation with right wing people/parties or that we should be nice or mild in our criticism of the more loony TRAs behaviour.

My specific issue is that when something tips over from public protest into personal harassment it rightly puts huge numbers of people off.

they were saying xyz anyway

They were, and they were lying. Those lies, told over and over, are what opened the eyes of hundred of thousands of people. Those lies were brilliant at turning people against the TRAs, because they were so obviously lies.

I am not saying that I have any right to dictate how Posie should protest, merely that it's not helpful.

Juells · 31/01/2019 14:04

Harassment and abuse seems to have worked for the TRAs, with everyone afraid to offend them. But god forbid a woman should do the same thing, then it's considered to reflect on every other woman in the world who is GC.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 31/01/2019 14:11

god forbid a woman should do the same thing,

Who has done the same thing?

InSightMars · 31/01/2019 14:15

They were saying xyz anyway? So, if they’re saying we’re bigots and haters, we might as well be bigots and haters? Because obviously there’s no middle ground to be explored between pussyfooting and stomping all over them in jackboots. Let’s give them what they want and show everyone we are actually as bad as they say we are.

Yeah, that’ll learn ‘em.

happydappy2 · 31/01/2019 14:22

Posie just highlighted the issue of Sarah McBride refusing to acknowledge there are any risks to women & girls, with the clash of trans ideology. If Sarah refuses to enter into a conversation-that is highlighting the very problem. Sarah is in a powerful position & not listening to valid concerns. Posie was not threatening or abusive.

Juells · 31/01/2019 14:23

Who has done the same thing?

Just reflecting generally on the fact that sauce for the gander is never sauce for us geese.

I'm a gander.

JackyHolyoake · 31/01/2019 14:44

donquixotedelamancha "she was at work in a private meeting- what they did was harrassment. There was no attempt to have a constructive conversation, it was just attention seeking. "

McBride is National Press Secretary for Human Rights Campaign, the USA equivalent of UK's Stonewall. McBride does not work at the Senate building in Washington DC. McBride is not a senator or on any of the staff at the Senate. McBride was there for a political lobbying meeting advocating for the erasure of females' rights by way of lobbying to have sex removed from law and replaced with "gender identity" in the Proposed USA Equality Act. [This proposed law is now dubbed the "Female Erasure Act."]

The door to that room was open, signifying that privacy was not required by its occupants. There was no harassment; it was a fair challenge to someone who is energetically lobbying to remove all rights for females in USA.

lucydo · 31/01/2019 15:14

Oxytocindeficient if posters didn't spend so much time on private jokes on the threads you mention, perhaps posters like me would be more inclined to read them. As it is, they read like 80% in-jokes. Hilarious for those on the in, less so for those that aren't.
And I can't see what is wrong with asking for a summary of the problem - don't read the thread if it bothers you. For all the sound and fury that has been released on this issue, both here and on twitter, I thought that it must be more than PP attending a meeting held by a RW organisation and giving some grief to a TA. But that's it.
Sometimes I step away from all this, and when I engage again all hell has been let lose. Not everybody can follow this all the time so no, sorry, I'm not going to read over a thousand posts.
Thank you to everyone whose helped me out on this, especially ^grintch*.

I can't get the video to play so I'm withholding judgement but thanks for the info that a) Sarah McBride is a lobbyist, and b) that this happened at the Senate building, not at McBride's place of work.

That had not been made clear to me at all.

InSightMars · 31/01/2019 15:35

Juells "Harassment and abuse seems to have worked for the TRAs, with everyone afraid to offend them. But god forbid a woman should do the same thing, then it's considered to reflect on every other woman in the world who is GC."

You don't think there are transgender people out there getting tarred with same brush as the TRAs? Give over. And what next for GC women? Should we stock up on smokebombs and put in our orders for barbed-wire wrapped baseball bats because, hey, seems be working for the TRAs.

catkind · 31/01/2019 15:37

That is harrassment? Trying to get a political canvasser to engage with discussion on the subject they're canvassing about? Jeez, maybe it was a little impolite but I was expecting far worse from the billing. And over this mainstream GC advocates disown PP? What a stark contrast to trans campaigners (again). Who fail to condemn people uttering threats or wishes of actual bodily harm, wielding baseball bats, shouting, even assaulting women. Really shows up what a polite, careful campaign this is on the GC side if that is the worst example they can muster. Stark contrast as I say.

Beautifulday49 · 31/01/2019 15:40

Is it just me, or is Sarah McBride the Lobbyist smirking in that video?

And what if it had been a man presenting as a man that Julia and PP had interrupted and questioned? Would the 'outrage' be the same? Asking for a friend.

Good.

Most discussion centres Posie Parker and there seems less reference to Dr Julia Long who has worked as both an academic and feminist activist for women and girls.

The suffragettes used explosives. Posie used words. We commemorate the suffragettes and condemn Posie as "not helpful". She is a disruptor, it's needed right now. Like it or not.

Beautifulday49 · 31/01/2019 16:08

I mean the left wing outrage.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 31/01/2019 16:23

A shower of shit to be honest. Has probably set the cause back about a million years. All any decent person can see is two angry women (Posie and Julie) harassing someone trying to get on with their work.

This isn't feminist. I don't know why Julia is pallying up with these people- they (and Posie included, from her statements) do not like lesbians and do not have our interests at heart. But Julia, like Anne Ryzulo, is keen on saying that there is no such thing as transgender. It is clear that there is and that that group deserves rights, just as women do, but that any conflict between the two needs to be managed. If you don't agree with that, we are not on the same page. I do not hate trans people and I don't deny their feelings about their gender-dysphoria and the way that they live their lives. I want women to have single-sex spaces- that is my motivation. I do not want to make the lives of trans people difficult. I do not want the 'right' to tell trans women they have penises or to refuse to use their preferred pronouns. If that is your main aim, I suggest you look carefully at how feminist those motivations really are.

Basically Julia and Posie's stunt will likely have the effect of alienating loads of people from the cause who may otherwise have been sympathetic and plays straight into the hands of those who say that feminists have links with the right wing. I have not aired any views publicly, but no way in hell will I be doing it now.

I'm a long-time lurker who's only just signed up. Thank you to everyone for clarifying this - I read one of the long threads, I've seen various postings on Facebook from Posie and on Twitter from Jane Clare Jones, and was getting frankly baffled about what the hell was happening. So it's been really helpful reading this thread.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 31/01/2019 16:34

R0wantrees do your puzzled-face all you like. I think the only people persuaded by that little intervention are those who hate trans people (and also hate lesbians and women too). Seeing this person as some sort of modern-day suffragette is ludicrous.

But then again, people on here consistently defend prejudice against trans people, including the blanket ban by Trump to exclude them from the military and instances of workplace and school bullying. So I can see why you would refuse to see any problems with what Posie has done or the damage that has been caused.
