is it just my confirmation bias?

that article reads to me like this:

Graham Linehan expresses reasonable concerns
Unreasonable trans extremists lose their shit
Pink news is colluding in homophobia

Did Nick mean it to put that message across?

R0wantrees · 12/12/2018 09:42

Its a common formula in this sort of PN article.

Usually they have a couple more quotes, Fox & Owl often oblige.

The headlines seem to be absorbed as truths regardless
eg "women at 'we need to talk' meeting in Westminster think all people who are transgender are parasites' etc

Nick Duffy's articles are consistant.

R0wantrees · 12/12/2018 09:49

worth reading twitter responses to Pink News and Nick Duffy's article:

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 12/12/2018 10:22

god. tweet after tweet pointing out what total numpties pink news are

and about 3 or 4 dedicated nutters posters constantly playing the 'you're denying my existence' card

we really are in the majority you know

the extremists are just so, well extreme, and noisy and violent that sometimes it's hard to see

R0wantrees · 12/12/2018 10:31

Same thing happened last week re Stonewall:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/a3444196-Stonewall-What-have-we-been-up-to-in-the-last-year-Their-year-impact-report

It will be being spun elsewhere though.

After Ellen article calling out Pink News and Nick Duffy's article:

'Male-Run ‘Pink News’ at Odds with the Lesbian Community…Again' by Julia Diana Robertson
(extract)

"PinkNews, a male-run publication, has a history of coming under fire with the lesbian community. Yesterday, it happened yet again…

Lesbians are the most silenced within the alphabet and within the mainstream media. We’re pathologically misrepresented.

The mainstream media (including the ‘LGBT’ mainstream) are male-dominated (like everything else)… Even lesbian organizations and media are controlled by non-lesbians and male-money—Parent companies or advertisers that ultimately control what we can and cannot say. Mainstream media is like the creepy uncle who shows up at your lesbian dinner party, uninvited, holding a bouquet of d*cks. PinkNews has been called out on social media, time and time again, for what lesbian readers view as biased reporting, anti-lesbian sentiment and misogynistic viewpoints." (continues)

Yesterday, PinkNews ran an article on Irish writer/director Graham Linehan. In the article, PinkNews painted Linehan (a vocal ally to the lesbian community) in a distorted light, while quoting Dr Adrian Harrop (someone who lesbians consider extremely anti-lesbian) as though he’s an ally. This added to an already long list of complaints the lesbian community has about PinkNews—So many complaints in fact, lesbians quite often refer to the publication as “Penis News”.

When PinkNews writes on lesbian topics and issues, it’s often from a male point of view. In January of 2018, PinkNews added a woman to their staff. When asked online if she was a lesbian (multiple times, by lesbians in the community), there was no response.

PinkNews has also been routinely called out for sanctioning anti-lesbian slurs. The use of an anti-lesbian slur serves to endorse abuse against lesbians (including threats of violence against lesbians for innate same-sex attraction). PinkNews wrote an article defending the use of a slur that’s currently used against lesbians for being… well… lesbians. And in that same article admitted the slur was… well… a slur." (continues)

More 'reporting' by NIck Duffy in Pink News

Pride in London 2019 to ‘enhance’ security after anti-trans hijack
Nick Duffy 30th November 2018,
(extract)
"Pride in London 2019 will have “enhanced” security, organisers say, after the 2018 parade faced disruptions from anti-trans activists.

Pride organisers addressed their plans to change security events in their annual impact report.

The city’s 2018 Pride parade was marred by controversy in July 2018 after anti-transgender activists forced their way to the front of the parade and physically blocked the march from taking place.

PinkNews filmed live from the scene as, after a brief negotiation with Pride organisers, the group were allowed to proceed unimpeded down the entire parade route, displaying signs opposing transgender rights and distributing anti-trans literature." (continues)

women who don't want to be called 'bleeders' are anti trans trolls

now I really have seen it all

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/12/2018 15:10

In a normal world she would have said ‘sorry - thought it was a joke - didn’t realise it would offend so many women - my bad - I’ve deleted it and let’s focus on period poverty!’

Not poke the bear a bit more. Insult your supporters, then a bit more and when the bear is fully awake and biting. ‘Waaahhhhg, mammy! But I’m right I’m right I’m right. You nasties. I’m leaving then. You made me do it. You’ll be sorry when I’m dead’ (door slams).

Nick Duffy has been churning out this sort of misogyny in his Pink News articles for a long time.

R0wantrees · 13/12/2018 15:38

women who don't want to be called 'bleeders' are anti trans trolls

Tells us a lot about the nice chaps from Pink News.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 13/12/2018 15:48

Is Nick Duffy the bloke who did a (maybe radio?) show with Debbie Hayton at some unspecified time once? have a shite memory, sorry

Ereshkigal · 13/12/2018 19:07

It was the one the thread is about. Posie too.

Well this has been an interesting read this evening.Grin
Glad that you called back on the thread Debbie, so that I can say thanks to you and Posie.
Thanks also Mrs. SP and others for the link.
(Not so much the rent a rant derail crap)

I do get a bit pissed off hearing the same story from Nick and "men-who-speak-for-lesbians" about lesbians being told to use the men's bogs.

It's like one of those urban myths my grandmother used to tell me about chewing gum wrapping itself round your heart if you swallow it.

AspieAndProud · 13/12/2018 21:31

'Comedian Cariad Lloyd hounded off Twitter by anti-trans trolls'

Was this the same comedian who appeared on QI and suggested ‘She sells seashells on the seashore’ was about a ‘syphilitic whore’?

(It’s thought to be based on the pioneering palaeontologist Mary Anning.)

DebbieInBirmingham · 13/12/2018 21:36

Yes it was Nick who was invited along with Posie and me. After a very reasonable discussion on camera and off, I would have hoped that he might have taken a more reconcilatory line in his reporting.

But I suspect that whatever he thinks personally he is paid to produce pieces according to house style, tone and emphasis.

DebbieInBirmingham · 13/12/2018 21:38

Thanks @BirdseyeFrozen. I do try and follow threads on Mumsnet but they move so quickly that I can't keep up.

BirdseyeFrozen · 13/12/2018 21:53

I struggle to keep up too Debbie, but these threads are my education these days, since I've been stopped from picking the hockey team in my older years Grin
