I have learned some more things about Helen Webberley and am not done talking about her.
She was in the Sun, smiling with the reported in an exclusive interview (hates tabloid press?)
www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/4861824/transgender-kids-doctor-helen-webberley/
The piece tells you that she is allegedly not formally trained in gender issues:
Helen qualified as a doctor in 1992, teaching herself about transgender health after moving to Wales in 2006 to work as a GP and realising there was no service in the country.
Her advice is in the piece is contrasted with Dr Polly Carmichael from GIDS - who advocates careful gatekeeping, counselling and watching/waiting.
The journalist pushes the "trans or die" narrative...
And they tellingly give Dr Webberley the final word
“Say one in 100 would change their mind - 99 have got to go through puberty just in case that one changes their mind.
“Don’t put 99 through hell to save one.”
This I take HUGE ISSUE WITH. The truth is that scientific studies show between 50-90% of trans-identified children DESIST, we have no way of telling who will in advance, most of these kids are the ones actually referred to clinics, they grow up to be lesbian/gay, and that medicalization may lead them down a specific path that is harder to go away from.
