Not posted much on this but been following the debate. Just heard interview with the Guide Leader at the centre of the GG issues (Helen I think) and announcement that they will be debating the whole trans issue after 9am with Nicky Campbell.

Nick Campbell has breached BBC social media policy

Is he freelance like Gary Linekar? Linekar is allowed to say what he likes on social media because he is. He also gets a bigger pay packet.

Heads up - I just recorded an interview for the World at One on Radio 4. Very different audience to 5 Live, I hope the tone of the piece will be more balanced.

vaginafetishist · 24/09/2018 13:02

Well done well done, brave woman. You are an absolute shero.

AgnesBadenPowell · 24/09/2018 13:03

And there is more in the pipeline.

I have learned some more things about Helen Webberley and am not done talking about her.

She was in the Sun, smiling with the reported in an exclusive interview (hates tabloid press?)

www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/4861824/transgender-kids-doctor-helen-webberley/

The piece tells you that she is allegedly not formally trained in gender issues:
Helen qualified as a doctor in 1992, teaching herself about transgender health after moving to Wales in 2006 to work as a GP and realising there was no service in the country.

Her advice is in the piece is contrasted with Dr Polly Carmichael from GIDS - who advocates careful gatekeeping, counselling and watching/waiting.

The journalist pushes the "trans or die" narrative...

And they tellingly give Dr Webberley the final word

“Say one in 100 would change their mind - 99 have got to go through puberty just in case that one changes their mind.

“Don’t put 99 through hell to save one.”

This I take HUGE ISSUE WITH. The truth is that scientific studies show between 50-90% of trans-identified children DESIST, we have no way of telling who will in advance, most of these kids are the ones actually referred to clinics, they grow up to be lesbian/gay, and that medicalization may lead them down a specific path that is harder to go away from.

Nick Campbell has breached BBC social media policy

The BBC promoted Helen Webberely and her private company Gender GP.
She has added a link to website of her company onto the BBC 5Live Twitter thread about the segment and name checked it in the interview.

heresyandwitchcraft · 24/09/2018 13:10

Incidentally, I found out that Webberley's Gender GP is represented by a company called Falcon PR, who also (I am sure completely coincidentally) work with an online pharmacy and a private medical group that performs aesthetic procedures.

Rowan, is it added to the BBC bias thread

Melamin · 24/09/2018 13:39

Nicky Campbell says it was an 'exploration' not a debate:

A grope around in the dark. No lanterns allowed.

R0wantrees · 24/09/2018 13:44

Rowan, is it added to the BBC bias thread

Yes, the thread is linked.

I'm going to develop a range of latex sheaths for ladies who have large clitorises that they need to protect when they engage in sexual activity. They will be pink, purple and sparkly silver, natch

Charliethefeminist · 24/09/2018 14:58

Thanks Rowan. I think Campbell deleted his retweet.

R0wantrees · 24/09/2018 15:00

I think Campbell deleted his retweet.

He can't delete his comments on the program though.

(although whomever manages iplayer does seem to make some 'curious' decisions sometimes about what is available on catch-uo with regards TRA)

You remember Stephen Whittle who famously advised that Leaders dish out condoms to girls at Girl Guide camps to deal with the whole concealed/undisclosed penis thing?

Whittle is somewhat miffed about todays show and bizarrely talks about how Girl Guiding was so personally important to Whittle as a youngster, though Whittle is now a 'transman'. Doesn't Whittle know the new GG policy would have born females turfed out if they identify as transmen now?

This tweet was in a convo with TELI - the org founded by the alleged flasher and alleged incest porn sharer and alleged inciter of minors to engage in flashing - Bradley.

WTAF. They had a whole interview with Mermaids right after Helen was featured. It was hardly one-sided.
And here we are, ordinary women, simply wanting a solitary dissenting voice, just one seat at the table, on a program framed as a "debate" or a "discussion." We applaud the smallest breadcrumbs.

EverardDigby · 24/09/2018 17:27

Gender tracing service Grin

Perhaps this should be our next campaign....

Charliethefeminist · 24/09/2018 18:11

The fact that Stephen Whittle is so publicly trying to come to the rescue of self ID in the UK is significant, surely. The fact that SW had to come to Mumsnet to try to pretend to be reasonable, as well. All that effort to be nice - aaaaand he's back to calling Girl Guide leaders bigots. We see you, Stephen.

R0wantrees · 24/09/2018 18:23

April 2018 thread started by Stephen Whittle on MN included discussion about Girl Guides: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3212371-Where-are-all-the-trans-men-An-Answer

Melamin · 24/09/2018 18:32

The fact that Stephen Whittle is so publicly trying to come to the rescue of self ID in the UK is significant, surely Quite - why do we have Susie Green from Mermaids and Stephen Whittle of Push for Change so keen to debate with a dismissed Guide Leader - you would have thought that was a job for Girl Guiding. After all they wrote the guidelines?
