Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

What's with all the transgender hate?

Tiggy82 · 22/09/2018 23:23

I'm new to this and have been looking at the feminism chat and there seems to be so much hate and fear about transgender people! What's that about? And apparently you can't be a feminist and be accepting of transgender people, that just seems ludicrous to me, surely feminism is about equality, I am not pretending to be particularly knowledgeable on the trans subject, but i do think having equality for transgender people is nothing but a positive thing. Has anyone actually been personally negatively affected by a transgender person? Or is it all a theoretical fear?

And there have been instances of transphobia, but they are usually reported and deleted (and quite often from new posters, funny that)

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/09/2018 08:03

Ive not seen the LM threads. But similar threads are started about all sorts of people in the public eye, so i dont doubt there are some 'bitchy' comments, but again some of them would be transphobic

Ereshkigal · 25/09/2018 08:03

Yes, funny how terves are all apparently white and middle-class, as opposed to the brave working class trans women of color such as Lily, India, Jane etc.

YY. Shon, Natacha, Juno, Roz the list goes on.

LadyBrian · 25/09/2018 08:08

Surely the fact that a thread/post gets deleted is proof that MN (en masse) is 'tackling transphobia'? Posts are not pre-moderated so anyone can say anything and if nobody reports it then it stays.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/09/2018 08:16

I agree lady.....it would be better if MNHQ were a bit better with their deletion messages as obviously posts are deleted for a variety of reasons, not just transphobia or personal attacks

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/09/2018 08:17

I was deleted for quoting a post that was subsequently deleted...and boy did i throw a wobbly til they explained. Most embarrassing

Could have been worse...you should have seen the posts i deleted lady Even i was Shock at myself

VickyEadie · 25/09/2018 08:42

MrsBertBibby There was no thread which specifically mentioned the person you reference - there was a thread about politicians posting photos of themselves on social media in underwear - specifically because any person who is or wants to be a politician (especially an MP) ought really to have in mind the fact that (a) there is an expectation of that person behaving with decorum and dignity and (b) as was indicated in the thread, a politician doing this (especially a woman) can expect to have the piss ripped out of them by the press, let alone social media forums. Anyone in a position of political responsibility (and I will refer here to anyone representing women, who have a hard enough time being taken fucking seriously at the best of times) ought to know that.

Terrible behaviour by appalling mumsnetters. Thank goodness those were deleted. On the other hand of course. No. Many TRAs come on here deliberately to post transphobic stuff which then get screenshot and evidenced of 'proof of transphobia'.

Molokonono · 25/09/2018 08:45

I'll bite. There was a really childish thread recently about (I assume) Lily Madigan posting pics of herself in a crop top. It was like a bloody sixth form bitchfest in there. I have grave misgivings about LM's appropriation of a women's Officer post, but bitching about her rather silly Twitter posts wouĺd give many the impression she's just a hate figure, rather than the subject of serious debate. Can you imagine the posts about a female woman's officer posing in a crop top and boasting about getting their first bralette? They would get slaughtered and ripped to shreds on here.

AngryAttackKittens · 25/09/2018 08:46

Are we really back to "ladies must be nice and kind at all times, and certainly never take the piss" again?

MIdgebabe · 25/09/2018 08:50

No, I think we can take the piss at each other and at other women .

FloralBunting · 25/09/2018 08:50

Well, yes, there have been at least two messages, one about 'a new section 28' and one about transpeople wearing special sewn on badges so they can be identified or something, both posted by AWA, I presume sarcastically, which were then screen shotted and posted on twitter which induced long threads of the vapours among the anime-avatared tweeters who had their worst fears confirmed about what an awful place this is. So far, on the actual evidence side, we've had a silly thread about Lily Madigan's silly comments about their possible future boobs, and my post about the misappropriation of oppression narratives coupled with some guff about me being a white middle class aspiring CEO.

MrsBertBibby · 25/09/2018 08:53

No, we're at "if you want to persuade easonable people to your opinion, best not to appear as if you have more in common with the right wing republican toilet-obsessives. Those are not people I would wish to stand with.

FloralBunting · 25/09/2018 08:54

Although I am excessively diverted by being called 'well respected'. I'm either Grin that I post enough to be noticed by the AWA, or Hmm that the words 'well respected' were put in scare quotes.

AngryAttackKittens · 25/09/2018 08:55

Ah, so it's hyperbole o-clock. Good to know! I'll be over in the sweary bastards corner if anyone needs me.

MrsBertBibby · 25/09/2018 08:59

No room for debate, eh?

FloralBunting · 25/09/2018 08:59

MrsBertBibby, seriously. There are so many reasonable posts on here reiterating that this is not solely about toilets, this is not 'anti-trans' etc. The very best evidence that people can come up to show how awfully transphobic we are is a few catty comments on threads which tbf, usually get deleted after too many people post in agreement about the silliness of whoever it is in the first place. I don't generally waste time on them, but if some women wish to vent about someone being a silly sod, I'm not going to finger wag.

AngryAttackKittens · 25/09/2018 09:05

Ironically enough right-wing American men in the Republican party often also have strong opinions on the proper deportment of ladies.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 25/09/2018 09:07

So you're not interested in content unless it's sufficiently pureed and packaged in a pretty woke bow? I don't care about looking like a right winger, I care about women and children. There are legion threads on here with meaty content, grow some teeth and engage. Tribalistic insults are vapid and boring.

BettyDuMonde · 25/09/2018 09:09

Tone policing of women - not feminist.

AngryAttackKittens · 25/09/2018 09:09

Especially when they're not even being used in their correct context, Republicans being American and all.

LangCleg · 25/09/2018 09:10

I keep the rules as best I can but I have neither the desire nor the inclination to be reasonable. Not my problem if you have Victorian sensibilities and shriek for the sal volatile at the first sign of piss-taking or robust speech.

Molokonono · 25/09/2018 09:18

No, we're at "if you want to persuade easonable people to your opinion, best not to appear as if you have more in common with the right wing republican toilet-obsessives. Those are not people I would wish to stand with. You don't wish to stand with women who think that rapists in prison is a bad thing because some women who may or may not have said this also took the piss out of a man posing in a bralette? Lol.
