Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Confused

Hi, I'm new to all the current debates around feminism and feminism itself and have lurked a lot and posted a little.
I'm confused over a conversation I had with a colleague last week discussing self ID and the concerns women are raising. Is it possible to be a feminist and have no issue with all inclusive toilets and changing rooms and to believe that trans women are women? I didn't think so but like I said, I'm new to the subject and realise the answers are probably in other posts somewhere but couldn't find a title to match my question.
I am very uncomfortable with all inclusive toilets and have been following GRA discussions.
Can you be a feminist and support the GRA?

Dakinis As you couldn't tell me who self ID benefits, I've had to draw my own conclusions.

The only conclusion I can draw
About these changes to the law
Is that it's men who like to rape
And prey on women who can't escape
Who will have the most to gain
While women's rights go down the drain

Who will lose, well let me see,
With this new change to self ID?

Women in prison, well, they're fair game
And girls in school, they're just the same
The new teacher (with beard and willy)
Says, "Come on girls, now don't be silly,
Change your clothes for hockey now
I have been and made a vow
That means I'm a woman too
So why should I not look at you?"

Radical feminists (rad fems) generally exclude trans women, liberal or left leaning feminists generally include them.

Virtually every single radical feminist and many of the GC women here are "left leaning".

I may not speak for you, but you cannot override my consent. This is not a two way street.

The fact that you think you can, is worrying

There was a mention of 'us women'. Take a moment to think on how many times you've ever seen that phrase used around MN.

Sorry I'm still stuck on being called a handmaiden.

Interesting this is how feminists are referring to women as handmaidens who dare to have an unpopular opinion. How feminists are doing this to other women without being called out.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 20:46

No one cares.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 20:46

FWIW I don't believe you're a handmaiden.

Dakinis · 20/09/2018 20:46

Precisely!

Knicknackpaddyflak · 20/09/2018 20:47

The term handmaiden references The Handmaid's Tale, it has an actual specific feminist meaning. Try reading the book. It's a feminist seminal piece.

Dakinis · 20/09/2018 20:48

I know exactly what it means which is why I'm surprised it is being used in this context.

Barracker · 20/09/2018 20:48

Your opinion on rapist men in women's prisons was wrong, Dakinis.

How have you got along with correcting your mindset there?
Or does that bother you less than getting short shrift from people who are better informed than you?

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 20:48

You should see what those top top all round excellent feminists who get called handmaidens say about women who don't agree with them though.

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 20:49

Tip top, obvs

Dakinis · 20/09/2018 20:49

Opinions can't be wrong barracker - they are just that, opinions.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 20/09/2018 20:51

If you're confused about why the word is being used in this context it goes some way to explaining why you're also confused about the reality of self ID. Try reading the book again.

OOOH nice one! 😁

MipMipMip · 20/09/2018 20:58

There seems to be a lot of talk about not speaking for other women. Which is fair enough. You shouldn't do that without permission.

So I'm giving a few that permission for me (on this subject only!)

There's more but that will do to start.

Ladies, you may speak for me.

Truthmytruth · 20/09/2018 20:59

Opinions are get out clauses. We all use them as a defense mechanism. It is my opinion that dogs are cats. In my head I’m validated. But the world knows my opinion is wrong. But it’s my opinion. I have a right to say it. We are entitled to believe what we want. We are not entitled to demand others believe us. In my opinion

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 21:01

As I keep pointing out, the current law works on the basis of self ID. All this fear about males identifying as female and using female spaces. They've been doing it for 14 years. Legally. For 14 years.

It's bullshit. A tiny number of males used the women's loo and were tolerated. Obvious men don't tend to go in the women's loo outside particularly woke areas. It's a social contract. Males stay out in general. Look at any thread on here where a man goes into the ladies.

Plus this aggressive push into all women's spaces has only been going on here since 2015 and the fuckwitted Trans Inquiry.

PeakedinthePeaks · 20/09/2018 21:01

I use handmaiden to suggest that you are supporting men as your opinions certainly don't seem to support women. You have a very male centric attitude to this so that makes me question your motives on this thread. You seem to stand alone here which strikes me as odd. You have no answers to the questions posed, appear not to understand how women are impacted and have labelled me before I even know enough about feminism to label myself.

OP posts:
Dakinis · 20/09/2018 21:02

Yet you know enough to label me a handmaiden. Pull the other one OP.

PeakedinthePeaks · 20/09/2018 21:04

I asked if your were perhaps a man or a handmaiden, I didn't label you as either. You still have no answers.

OP posts:
Truthmytruth · 20/09/2018 21:04

And that’s how they get are kids. They label them when they are questioning. We, as adults see through it. Our young kids/adults are gaslighted. In my opinion
