I've known for a while thanks to helpful TRA's posters that I'm a man but I'm also a man with undiagnosed mental health problems too as I hate unfamiliar social interactions. Sick of biologically illiterate men and women, the mangina brigade can piss off too. How does someone manage the mental workout to trying and make it sound reasonable - 'your genitals don't define you or have anything to do with your gender apparently, but if you squint whilst looking at my penis I swear it looks like a vagina'.

Why do I do this to myself? I'm going to have nightmares now.

SandAndSea · 30/08/2018 23:49

Hmmm...

Does this mean I'm a man now?

woodfires · 31/08/2018 00:20

As a child therapist I really wonder sometimes WTF! Even my DH who has no interest in these things usually and thinks I have a bee in my bonnet will have to agree this is total sexist nonsense. It also completely confuses gender and sex.

EntropicTupperwareDrawer · 31/08/2018 06:59

In particular they have focused their academic-activist work on the topics of bisexuality, open non-monogamy, sadomasochism, non-binary gender, and Buddhist mindfulness

That's quite a leap to get from one to the other of those Shock

How do you get from taking a Buddhist approach of not hurting any living creature, to a BDSM which is all about inflicting hurt? I guess the same way that you get to thinking a penis and clitoris are only distinguished by length- by having a mishmash of ideology, word salad, self-satisfaction and cluelessness where your critical faculties should be.

It's simply mind boggling that a professional association would give room to this regressive gibberish.

gendercritter · 31/08/2018 07:04

Can you imagine having therapy with Meg-John? I'd sit there feeling anxious about the wrong pronouns coming out while i was talking about something distressing. You should not spend your therapy sessions worrying you are going to offend your therapist. You should be focusing on your own issues.

Interesting to note the sources cited in the guide.

Barker often cites their own work.

The vast majority of sources were published in the last couple of years.

Stephanie Davies Arai recent speech at 'Let A Woman Speak' event in Plymouth.
Towards the end of the speech she discusses the impact of the 'Memorandum of Understanding' affirmation requirement on those counselling young people who are questioning their gender identity and how concerns have been raised to her by professionals.
Also that this MoU is due for renewal in the Autumn and feedback is being accepted.

So many layers of grim here.

It does appear to be a value judgement on being "northern" and "working class".

So the conclusion is to aspire to be "southern" and not working class, and to achieve this don't be strong, and don't argue.

Women, know your place.

R0wantrees · 31/08/2018 16:06

I think the reference to 'Northern women' was removed yesterday with an apology from the BACP.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 31/08/2018 16:11

So to paraphrase:

Remove ALL sex characteristics from the labels man and woman

Replace with unbelievably and stupidly sexist stereotypes

A massive (massive) proportion of the human race will no longer be identifiable as EITHER male or female, and will be bloody annoyed about it as they will have lost their identity.

Or alternatively, the fact can be stated that this is the far end of fuckwittery and no one with a brain should have ever written it.

misscockerspaniel · 31/08/2018 16:13

What a load of fucking codswallop. Deal with this crap by referring to people according to their sex. Eventually, the cult members will grow up and normal service will resume.

R0wantrees · 31/08/2018 16:14

'Smash the Binary'?

VeryBerryAugust · 31/08/2018 16:32

As a northern working class so an I laughed at that.

At least they are open!

I liked to self identify as common but not rough.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 31/08/2018 16:32

It won't smash the binary, since those no longer fitting that particular piece of codswallop's definition of 'male' and 'female' will actually have no trouble at all in knowing if they or each other are male/female/man/woman and will go on being men/women and take no bloody notice. That is realistically where this is going.

It will however make anyone wittering about 'binary' about as popular as someone trying to sell you a timeshare.

VeryBerryAugust · 31/08/2018 16:32

Woman! The autocorrect is working against me.

TammyTwoSawnson · 31/08/2018 16:37

What the actual blue fuck?!!! Angry

VeryBerryAugust · 31/08/2018 16:39

It reminds me never to bother with counselling.

ShrodingersSturdyPyjamas · 01/09/2018 07:44

I don't think these two need any explanation. Just a reminder that Edward Lord is:
a - the partner of the person that wrote this guidance
b - running consultation on removing barriers to men accessing women's spaces in the City of London and all the facilities that it provides.

WRT defence of paedophilia as natural and normal, on Ken Plummer and more, doughty A. Gilligan (fast beocoming my favourite journo) was on this back in 2014 www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/10948796/Paedophilia-is-natural-and-normal-for-males.html

"As recently as 2012, Prof Plummer published on his personal blog a chapter he wrote in another book, Male Intergenerational Intimacy, in 1991. “As homosexuality has become slightly less open to sustained moral panic, the new pariah of 'child molester’ has become the latest folk devil,” he wrote. “Many adult paedophiles say that boys actively seek out sex partners … 'childhood’ itself is not a biological given but an historically produced social object.” "

Re Meg-John. Say it ain't so!

Yours sincerely

VeryBerryAugust · 01/09/2018 14:49

I recognise this "moral panic" label of old.

R0wantrees · 02/09/2018 10:03

The online version of the guide seems to be no longer available.

Although there has been focus on the definition of women, there was a great deal more in the document deserving of scrutiny.

I don't know if there is an archived version anywhere?

Interesting. No comment about 'If you have been offended by this document, have you considered that you may have deeply-seated conventional views which would be best served by a lengthy course of therapy with a BACP-guidance-compliant therapist?'

I'm actually in therapy at the moment and I am pretty sure it is helpful but I hope that my therapist is seeing me as a woman and not as an appearance-focused human with a penis at the short end of the spectrum.

Charliethefeminist · 02/09/2018 10:19

This story is in the Telegraph today

IAmLurkacus · 02/09/2018 10:37

Also in the mail. Bizarrely seem to be a lot of ‘radical feminists’ commenting! I bet they don’t know they’re ‘rad fems’ Smile
