A woman is an adult female human

Pratchet · 03/07/2018 10:18

Of the sex whose reproductive role is to gestate and bear young.

Let's just say this while we still can. Because it's true, and however many people try to make us lie about it, or remain silent, it will always be true.

In times of universal deceit, speaking the truth is a revolutionary act.

It hurts MY feelings to see 'transwomen are women'. It damages MY mental health to see that, it makes ME feel erased and MY identity feel destroyed. I have a voice and I deserve that voice. WE deserve it.

I am Spartacus. A woman is an adult female human. Sex is binary, immutable and defined by reproductive role.

If you report me, or get me banned you shoot the messenger. Because this is true and will always be true. And this day, this day of a lie, I WILL say it.

#Spartacus

Katemumsnet - we are under attack, and we are coming together to show support for each other. It was intended as a safe space for women to show support and share strength. Who is telling you it's inflammatory for women to do that?

A woman is an adult human female. I would not have to keep saying it if people did not keep telling me it wasn't true.

If the world will stop telling me it's not true, or it's up for debate, or it's uncivil, or inflammatory, or offensive, and I won't need to say it anymore.

Swear to God I never felt the need to say it before people starting telling me - to my utter astonishment - that it wasn't true.

HQ, what on earth is happening there? You are saying this has to be a civil debate, but you have already instructed us that we are not allowed to put forward our opinion.
Datun, you absolutely can express your opinion, and in fact the words in the OP would have been left if they were posted as part of a general discussion of gender and self id.

But when the whole point of the thread is to get posters to say the same words over and over, that's inflammatory. It's not the same thing as a thread to discuss Penny Mordaunt's language or how to get involved in the consultation, or to recommend a good form of words to mail your MP.*

Kate, I don't know what it looks like on your side of the fence. That's not what it's like here.

People are agreeing. They are showing a unified stance. It's not to inflame. It's not to get women to gang up on anyone.

It's like in the House of Commons when someone says something that they all agree with and everyone shouts out 'yes or aye'.

Or at a talk when people clap. It's a sign of agreement, approval and affirmation.

All we have is writing. Words on the screen. No one can hear us. No one can watch our body language.

Do you have any idea how upsetting it is when the women here are utterly denied that outlet?

Slapped back for typing words showing solidarity with other women. It's about women, for women and by women. No-one gives a fuck about transactivists or setting out with any kind of intention.

It's the height of self obsession for them to think we are.

It's a piece of piss to inflame transactivists. We can all do it in a heartbeat.

We're not doing that here.

PLEASE not confuse transactivists becoming inflamed, with women trying to inflame them.

Lottapianos · 03/07/2018 12:35

Can't quite believe the response from MNHQ. This is a thread discussing BIOLOGICAL REALITY, which is apparently something that we have to fight to have recognised these days, and where women have been supporting each other through the impact all of this gaslighting is having our mental health. What, for the love of sanity, can MNHQ have to complain about?

Newspeak · 03/07/2018 12:35

Nothing serious floorplan just the normal shit WOMEN have to deal with once a month on account of their BIOLOGY.

Can someone please pm me with regards to the other place I did ask in one of the previous threads but received no answer. I will still post here (unless I get banned) but I seriously need some space from this bullshit to vent.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 03/07/2018 12:35

I would like clarification on how many women are allowed to post their opinions on the same topic in one thread before it is considered “women gathering to be inflammatory” what is the number? 10 women? 5? 2? And is it across the whole of MN or just in the femism section? Is it just regarding the definition of a woman or are we no longer allowed to agree on pram choices either lest we offend graco or MacLaren?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/07/2018 12:36

@KateMumsnet - I do understand that you can only ensure civilised debate on here - but given that your membership here is largely women, and given that the other side seem 100% committed to UNcivilised debate in every other forum available, it looks as if you are just silencing the women who want to affirm that a woman is an adult female human, and that, whilst trans men and trans women deserve the same rights to freedom, privacy and dignity as any other human being on the planet, these should NOT trump the rights of women or any other human being on the planet.

I believe that MN is one of the very few places where we can say that biology MATTERS, and that it is not enough just to say 'I am a woman'; or that male bodied individuals should not be in female changing rooms or sharing tents with Girl Guides (without their parents' knowledge), or working in with rape victims, or in women's prisons, or competing against and beating women in competitive sports - and I admired MN for that.

If you effectively silence our voices on here, you are giving the debate to the transactivists.

MistOnTheWater · 03/07/2018 12:36

This is all getting very silly. we are not about to talk about physical, material reality - cheers MNHQ. Mn helped me as a mother with a difficult situation. Now we have to ignore actual reality and are not allowed to talk about it. There's a word for that.

aaarrrggghhhh · 03/07/2018 12:37

I tell you what- to the fucking barricades go I.

HogarthlovesSmurfs · 03/07/2018 12:37

Don't worry, Sisters. We will soon be given the right words to say, the right thoughts to think, and the right actions to do.

Under his eye.

superbstarling · 03/07/2018 12:37

When a government minister begins a debate with a blatant lie surely anyone effected by that debate must stand up and question that lie!

EmpressOfSpartacus · 03/07/2018 12:38

Rachel Irischild:

Speak out, speak up, speak louder
Our numbers multiply
As women we assert our selves
They shan't reclassify
We congregate and raise our voice
Our sex is not a lifestyle choice
In newfound sisterhood rejoice
We unify

Speak out, speak up, speak louder
Our volume magnify
With candour and integrity
and courage we reply
We tear down this hypocrisy
We finish this andocracy
We build a new democracy
Our battle cry

Speak out, speak up, speak louder
Our voices amplify
And let the truth be heard
above the rowdy hue and cry
We will not let a falsehood stand
We will not cede to their demand
This will not go the way they planned
We won't comply

Pratchet · 03/07/2018 12:38

Yes Datun. Powerful and passionate.

It's for US. It's just for US. We want that. We need it. It's for women on a feminism board to say 'sisters, we are together'.

It was to show all my fellow travellers a bit of love and to share some strength with a difficult road ahead.

As far as I'm concerned the right words are 'It's all a load of bollocks. Big hairy man bollocks'
that's prob hate speech.

Can not actually believe what I am reading. This is complete madness. How have we got to the point where saying a woman is a human female is classed as 'inflammatory'

It's complete insanity.

Ofew · 03/07/2018 12:39

"but the act of repeating it relentlessly is not really not the same thing as stating it as part of a civil debate in which an opposing view could make itself heard if it wished."

This thread is a response to the statement by Penny Morduant that "transwomen are women" is the starting point for the consultation on GRA reform, shutting down any debate on that. The feelings of women are not being taken into account.

On this thread, women are expressing their feelings. They have very few public spaces left to do this. Those feelings are just as valid as the feelings of transpeople.

As with "me too" it is the number of voices saying the same thing that has the impact.

It is women who have been told time and time again that there is "no debate."

And now Mumsnet is telling them the same thing, and claiming it is women themselves who shut down the debate.

Lottapianos · 03/07/2018 12:40

There's an article in the Guardian by Suzanne Moore today, where she says that she doesn't watch the Handmaids Tale anymore, because if she wants to see women being tortured and terrorised, she just turns on the news.

I am seething about what Penny Mordaunt has said this morning. Absolutely fucking raging. How dare she.

HQ, I am the least emotional poster. I'm civil and deliberately take any emotion out of most of my posts.

I have been known variously as Saint Datun or the Holy Datun, and a poster with a bottomless pit of patience.

But I, too, feel moved almost to tears.

Tears of frustration, pain and a profound feeling of betrayal.

Justine made it quite clear that moderators are not to be criticised. She wants her team to be happy in their work, loyal and, I think we all know, it's a thankless task.

Most people understand it's not the fault of moderators.

But it's undeniable that you have a great deal of power.

There won't be a woman on this thread who is not feeling you wield it.

It comes across as hopelessly, (and I mean that quite literally) one sided.

It's difficult to believe.

And entirely impossible to understand.

pearlkent · 03/07/2018 12:43

Is anyone able to screenshot (or whatever the technical term is) every single page of this thread, before it disappears altogether? I'd hate a GC journalist to miss it. It would be laughable if I wasn't silently screaming.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 03/07/2018 12:43

If people are inflamed by reading that women are adult human females on a feminist chat board- A FEMINIST CHAT BOARD - they are perfectly free to fuck right off. Go and read a book. Go away.

I wanted to post rule 6 but heck, they all fit today:

1st rule of misogyny: Women are responsible for what men do.
2nd rule of misogyny: Women saying no to men is a hate crime.
3rd rule of misogyny: Women speaking for themselves are exclusionary and selfish.
4th rule of misogyny: Women's opinions are violence against men thus male violence against women is justified.
5th rule of misogyny: WATM! Women and Feminism must be useful to men or they are worthless.
6th rule of misogyny: Women who go around being female AT men by menstruating and breast feeding babies deserve punishment.
7th rule of misogyny: Women should always be grateful to men for everything.
8th rule of misogyny: Men are whatever men say they are and women are whatever men say they are.
9th rule of misogyny: Men always know the "real reasons" for everything women do and say. 10th rule of misogyny: The worst thing about male violence is that it males men look bad. 11th rule of misogyny: Basic pattern recognition skills are cruel and evil when they hurt men's feelings.
12th rule of misogyny: whatever women suffer from, men suffer from more.
13th rule of misogyny: Women are not oppressed! Rape and catcalling and objectification are all compliments, not oppression.
14th rule of misogyny: Women have all the rights they need: The right to remain silent.

Pratchet · 03/07/2018 12:43

What does Suzanne Moore care? She's not speaking up with us.

Biologifemini · 03/07/2018 12:43

I was a biologist for about 8-9 years. No textbooks have been rewritten.
Am adult human female has the potential to produce eggs and lactate etc.
I think much of the disagreements wouldn’t be happening if science was taught better in schools. And science was more respected as a profession.
I sincerely doubt these debates are being had (to this extent) in countries where science and engineering are considered excellent professions.

Dragoncake · 03/07/2018 12:44

@MNHQ ?????

You're under pressure, that's clear.

But seriously? You've got this wrong. I'm now worried.

A new employee going off-guidelines and locking a thread of incontrovertible biological facts about 50 percent of all humans? Shock

If the existence of reproductive sex were up for debate FWR would, quite rightly, be full of posters showing us robust scientific evidence for that claim. Then we could debate it. This doesn't happen because male/female is not an opinion. There is no such evidence AFAIK.
