She's trying to recruit J.K.Rowling

I really like Jack Monroe. She’s messy and real with a huge heart. She fucks up. She wears her heart on her sleeve. Says some really stupid things.

But she tries. And she tries to use her platform for good. I don’t have much patience for nitpicking. Broad brush - she’s one of the good ones.

LangCleg · 21/03/2018 22:25

I am also sympathetic to Jack, Cauliflower. I think she is seriously misguided with the trans thing but it seems to me that her heart is in the right place and also that she is a vulnerable person. The sad thing is that real feminism would very likely give her a lot of what she needs. I hold out hope that some day she will see that.

CadyHeron, this was the original cartoon that created the sea-lion meme:

Oi lay off Jack Monroe!
She majorly annoyed Katie Hopkins Flowers so she has a big free pass to hold a few crappy views in my book.
As posters have said, in this instance anyway Jack M seems to have compared the whole concept of changing sex as analogous to some magical people dressing up in a novel about magic which seems an analogy with more than a grain of truth in there.
Great post Elementree I feel the same, which is why I find the whole ‘cis’ label so infuriating, especially when it’s used as a way to silence women.

Gacapa · 21/03/2018 22:33

I really, really want to like Jack. She reminds me of myself in a lot of ways - sensitive, thin skinned, fragile and prone to go off on one without thinking things through. I also sense that she struggles with her mental health.

I don't get why she doesn't get it. I wish she was proud to be everything she is, does, wears - as a female. As a woman.

DottyBlue2 · 21/03/2018 22:37

The pope wears a dress.

ArcheryAnnie · 21/03/2018 22:40

I don't really understand the OP's post and I think the post title is currently inaccurate (though Jack changes a lot, so who knows).

I've got a lot of sympathy for Jack. I think she's all over the place, and makes some very bad choices, and she'd do an awful lot better to step away from twitter, but she's also done some really good things, too.

I'd have even more sympathy for Jack if she stopped trying to self-righteously instigate horrible pile-ons on good women (she does this a lot) then gets all huffy when people reply to her, as she, er, doesn't like pile-ons.

Yeah I think that's what I was trying to say, badly, earlier.

It's the circles she moves in. That's how they roll. Lil Owen Jones has a lot to answer for, if you ask me. He's the big cheese of that MO.

cuirderussie · 21/03/2018 23:45

I find her endless narcissism really tedious,. Even the early stuff about starving and freezing and sitting there under one lightbulb was really overwrought and didn't ring true considering she comes from a stable loving middle class family with a co parenting ex. And she can be a nasty bully to other women.

doctorcuntybollocks · 21/03/2018 23:51

I've never taken the view that my enemy's enemy is my friend, so her clash with Katie Hopkins doesn't endear her to me. The pair of them seem like two heads of the same insatiable attention-monster.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/03/2018 03:35

What is it with TRAs and the word "vile"? Is this like "folks", where one person started using it and then the rest of them followed all lemming-like?

thebewilderness · 22/03/2018 03:58

They can't use the words men usually use against opinionated women, else it will give away the game, so they can only slurp from the delicious vile bigot chum bucket of outrage.

TeisanLap · 22/03/2018 04:06

Here’s hoping we’ve heard the last of it for a very very long time.

SecretsRSecrets · 22/03/2018 05:42

Maybe I'm a bit naive as I think I'm the only person thinking this, and I'm probably going to get flamed, but I didn't take the 'Men in dresses' comment the same way as everyone else.

I didn't take the comment as being transphobic. I thought what she was referring to was the pretend ones - the men who are 'putting on a woman act' (hence the 'men in a dress') to further this MRA/TRA agenda or to make gains they couldn't achieve otherwise. I didn't take this as an attack on transgender.

Just to clarify to some on this thread I am a trans supporter. I know several in real life, both TW and TM, they are friends and have spent many hours at our house over the years.

I do not support the MRAs/TRAs that are attacking women and/or trying to erase women's rights. This agenda is dangerous to women, children, trans and the gay community.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 22/03/2018 07:13

It's double standards again isn't it?

Feminists aren't allowed to find the term TERF offensive, because it's a 'descriptor'. Even when it's being used in the context of 'punching TERFs, fucking up some TERFs, cutting a TERF' s throat' etc etc. But it's just a description of what we are apparently, there is nothing offensive about it.

Calling Heather Peto 'a man in a dress though' - we are told there is nothing descriptive about that, that is hate speech. Doesn't matter the context, HATE SPEECH.

It's the same old. So tired of this total BULLSHIT. Fuck off.

You might want to ask them how they feel about "A man in a dress".

All that happens when people get called "cis, a man in a dress, Terf" etc is that both sides of a debate draw up barricades.

It helps no one on either side of a debate when 'slurs' are used.

AskBasil · 22/03/2018 07:56

And I'm a fucking camel.

Will RTFT later

AskBasil · 22/03/2018 08:01

She is really confused isn't she.

She complains about the bullying on Twitter and then deliberately tweets something she knows will end in a pile on.

I don't even think she's a hypocrite, because that would imply she's consciously deliberately saying one thing and doing another. I just think she's not intellectually honest enough to be able to acknowledge what she's doing.

Hoppinggreen · 22/03/2018 08:05

Seems logical
Many Transwomen think that they can wave their “wand” and shout
“Ignorius realitus “ and they are indeed actual women

Writersblock2 · 22/03/2018 08:09

Still hoping JKR gets vocal about this. I tweeted my support.

FeministBadger · 22/03/2018 08:48

What this tweet has highlighted to me is the ideological purity demanded by some members of the left now - you have to walk in the exact right steps, don't put a foot out of line and don't dare look like you're questioning anything.

The flurry of tweets following this have denounced JKR as evil, with people threatening to boycott her or burn her books because she's such a disbeliever. From my knowledge she's a huge left supporter, does masses of promotions for charity, has spoken widely about how as a fortunate member of society she has a duty to pay her fair share of taxes, and has given so much money to charity she dropped off the Forbes rich list. But she liked a slightly questionable tweet so burn the witch!

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 22/03/2018 09:04

I agree. This is going to be huge. In 20 years people will look back in horror and ask “how could we have done this ? Why did no one listen ?”.

I also believe it will ruin the left. Most of it anyway. They are turning on each other, on good people who have slightly different views because they aren’t “left” enough.

The way the left are shouting down when they believe they have he moral high ground on this issue has been an eye opener for me and possibly for others. If this new lot get any form of power it will be carnage for anyone who isn’t “perfect”.

My political allegiances have changed hugely as a result. I’m now a lost voter with no true political home. I don’t like the way much of the left is behaving and don’t want to be lumped in with them.
