She's trying to recruit J.K.Rowling

What this tweet has highlighted to me is the ideological purity demanded by some members of the left now

The striking thing to me was, as you put it The flurry of tweets following this have denounced JKR. It is blindingly obvious that for some reason the TRAs are watching JKR like a hawk and are looking for any pretext to destroy her reputation, and thus her ability to speak publicly. This is because she is a high profile successful woman. The MRA component of TRAs absolutely loathe her for this reason.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/03/2018 10:12

I haven't read the whole thread but what did Harry and Ron wear under their robes? I always assumed that they had trousers on and the robes were like a blousy academic dress?

PositivelyPERF · 22/03/2018 10:22

She has a massive young fan base and this makes her a huge threat to them. My oldest is very much of the Kool aid drinking crowd, but grew up with her books. He’s 27 and a huge fan of the Harry Potter books. Ironically he would probably listen to what she has to say and take it on board, before he’d listen to frumpy, old fashioned me. Just think of what a threat this woman is. They must be panicking about her possibly having a bigger influence than them. Ironically the woman that writes fantasy books has a bigger grip on reality than the the illogical TRA fantasists.

Datun · 22/03/2018 10:34

I agree JKR is hugely important.

Many of these kids were positively weaned on Harry Potter.

Lily Madigan is a huge fan, photographed in all the robes, the lot.

Any hint of her not supporting the ideology will be a disaster for TRAs.

I have no doubt they are ready to pounce and denounce.

PositivelyPERF · 22/03/2018 10:48

In some respects that would be a fantastic own goal. Can you imagine the lash back from the JK fan base? The amount of young people hitting peak trans would be unprecedented. GO ON TRAs! I DARE YOU!

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 22/03/2018 11:15

Unless you change the meaning of 'man' or 'dress' surely when heather wears a dress s/he is just that? Like I am 'a woman in yoga pants' today? How is that upsetting?

athingthateveryoneneeds · 22/03/2018 11:20

Come on, JKR. Women need your voice in this. I don't know much about your political leanings, I don't have Twitter or follow your blogs/websites, but we are HP fans in our home and we'd all be heartbroken if you followed the TRA line here.

Be on the side of women!!

nauticant · 22/03/2018 11:26

Because it lumps together the transsexuals and the autogynephiles. I can see why the transsexuals strongly dislike that.

The root of this problem is the broadening of the trans umbrella so much that it incorporates cross-dressers and other people whose motives might not be so pleasant. We're now stuck in the awkward situation of all kinds of grief being dished out from within this new trans grouping and any attempt to respond being met with "how DARE you label us as being the same!" It's a mess.

Rebecca Salt, who represents Rowling, said:

I’m afraid JK Rowling had a clumsy and middle-aged moment and this is not the first time she has favourited by holding her phone incorrectly.

😬 clumsy and middle-aged... ffs

PositivelyPERF · 22/03/2018 13:58

And yet another woman with the power to protect females, throws womankind under the bus. Pathetic hypocrisy from JK. You talked as if you were a feminist, but when the chips were down you don’t actually care about real women, just more worried about what men will think of you. Bad show JK, a really bad show.

NoSquirrels · 22/03/2018 14:01

Sad I’m genuinely gutted at that “statement”.

BeyondDeadlySiren · 22/03/2018 14:03

Maybe - similar to Matthew Wright last week - the statement came from her "celebrity self" rather than actually from JK? One can only hope...

(I really hope she wouldn't have gone with "middle aged" in her own written apology!)

athingthateveryoneneeds · 22/03/2018 14:09

Might as well have added "blonde moment" in there as well. If we're using insulting stereotypes, go for.broke! Biscuit

CapnHaddock · 22/03/2018 14:11

That's what happens when you're threatened with death, book burnings and boycotts. It would be the end of her career.

This is McCarthyism

NoSquirrels · 22/03/2018 14:13

I think she needed to distance herself from the prejudice expressed by the phrase “men in dresses”. I am disappointed she didn’t say “that phrase was ill thought out and I should’ve stopped to consider it would be offensive but the views on misogyny chimed with my experience..” or something that would have been an apology to trans people but not just a wholesale denial.

Middle-aged clumsy can’t hold her phone is just not a good look for backtracking. And if it had indeed been the case she’d have unliked it & apologises on Twitter with a gif or something funny.

So I don’t really believe it. But she must be under a lot of pressure - from all sides of her business and charity commitments - not to say stuff like that. Hence the publicist-led “gaffe” line.

Still Sad

Battleax · 22/03/2018 14:14

JKR, come on, you’re better than this.

AskBasil · 22/03/2018 14:53

I understand her cowardice I do.

It's just so depressing that someone with her wealth and power, is leaving it up to women who really don't have very much, to fight this battle alone.

I understand that she wants to distance herself from the hurtful but true "men in dresses" phrase. But she could have included condemnation of the violence that these men inflict on women.

doctorcuntybollocks · 22/03/2018 15:20

They are men in dresses. That is not prejudice.

BarrackerBarmer · 22/03/2018 16:02

Wow, lots of deletions on this thread

So JK is saying liked the tweet by accident?

FFS the tweet was about the ill treatment of women by the labour party. Stand by it.

Transphobia is a nonsense.

thornyhousewife · 22/03/2018 16:24

And the tweet was also about the privilege of voice afforded to transvestite men over women. This is an important point worth making.

I thought higher of JK.
