Woke up yesterday to a nawing pain where my knickers sit on my right leg. Thought oh I'm just getting fat and need bigger knickers.

Today I woke up feeling like shit. I can barely move my leg. It's agongy I cannot walk to see this monsteristy. There is a larged raised redness around it. I cannot get to the GP i have a meeting in the morning I cannot miss.
I feel really shit, keep getting cold as well. I thought infected hair folicie but it looks worse. Would show the large red patch around it but I'm embarrassed enough showing this. Please help 😭

Just up at a&e been put on iv antibiotics. Infected abcess and cellitius. 😫 redness grew twice the size from when I drew around. Thank you for telling me to go, saved my life more than likely!

Yep not surprised. Only just seen your thread so you’ve already been seen but I thought potentially cellulitis from your pic and description. But I just wanted to tell you, as someone who has now had cellulitis about eight times, and all from different sources (insect bites are a biggy for me) once you’ve had it, you’re very much prone to getting it again. And you get to learn the symptoms and know you need to get seen asap - whether that be walk in or A and E if you can’t see a GP etc and you learn to not let anyone attempt to tell you it’s ‘only’ blah blah blah.
Sending best wishes for your recovery x

They must be pig shit thick then because it took me about 2 seconds

To be fair I don't have that feature so I really don't know. I just know I get tempted by notifications and trending and spend more time than I should, so the thought of looking at all a pp's previous history seems quite a commitment of time.

I couldn't agree more.Having had severe cellulitis in my left leg 3 years ago, I've had 2 milder attacks in my right leg since then. I don't waste any time now before seeing the GP on an emergency same day appointment for antibiotics.

It just goes to show how dangerous it is to believe some of the advice posted on SM by people pretending to be a professional in whatever field

The "expert" advice given could have cost a life, not just an inconvenience or financial loss.

In this particular instance I think the poster concerned should be barred from MN permanently.

Unforgivable

Winter2020 · 17/09/2026 22:18

Hi OP,
I hope you feel better soon.
I just wanted to suggest that if the autism assessment was arranged by email you might be able to send an email updating them of the situation tonight. Then phone in the morning if you can - or ask someone to phone on your behalf.

Get well soon.

StripyShirt · 17/09/2026 22:25

Well done for taking the good advice on here, and best wishes for a quick recovery!

Actually I am. Which is why I refrain from putting more pressure on the NHS. Yes she feels a bit meh. Yes it hurts. The minute it’s popped she’ll feel instant relief.
obviously if it gets worse then she needs to be seen but can you imagine if everyone who had a boil had a meltdown and demanded an appointment.

Im sorry but you are 100% not a medical professional with your absolutely terrible advice, I would be willing to put my entire life savings on that, your advice is quite frankly dangerous and lacking in knowledge. People like you are why they should limit the ability to give medical information on this page, because people lie and give out terrible terrible advice.

But if you are a medical professional then seek training immediately!

I would also add it is unsafe to seek medical advice from these platforms. I'm glad OP is getting sorted now but it would have been better to call 111 straight away. Our GP has a message system for sending photos, etc, if you think you need to be seen the same day.

You could have some iv antibiotics tonight. Some first thing and the go to your meeting and back to the hospital for the afternoon / evening lot tomorrow.

again.

Thesearenotthedroidsyouarelookingfor · 17/09/2026 22:37

Other than seek real life medical advise I don’t think anyone should pay attention to what people suggest on here.

I often think posters like the OP are actually posting partly hoping for a push/permission to go to A&E and realistically know that they should.

People often don’t want to risk being a time waster or like the OP has something really important that they really can’t afford to miss. Sounds like the OP just needed posters to play “mum” and firmly pack her off to hospital. It sucks being an adult with a lot on your plate and then getting sick. I hope OP you have some real life support and people that can give you some TLC.

The WebMD website, to give just one example, says this:

Do not attempt to drain the abscess by squeezing or pressing on it. This can push the infected material into the deeper tissues.

The old idea of squeezing a boil or abscess to burst it is dangerously ignorant and grossly irresponsible.

Thank goodness you have been seen and treated. I hope you were given advice on how to look after the area. Will you be able to stay at home and rest while you recover?

Good luck.

God I hope I never get a boil or abscess. My inability not to squeeze, prod or pick at anything will be my undoing!

Hospitals are not hotels. You can't just check out and check in again to suit your own convenience. If the OP is on iv antibiotics she will be kept in hospital until the course is finished and she is fit to go home. When I was in hospital for iv antibiotics for severe cellulitis I had an infusion every 6 hours day and night for 16 days.

I have no doubt they will just change name and carry on giving awful advice and pretend they know what they are talking about. It is worrying that if they were one of the early posters and the OP listened, it could have been so much more dangerous, thank goodness that came after a bunch of sensible advice to follow up.

I only hope that poster feels sufficiently stupid and realises that they shouldn't be lying about having more knowledge than they have, but you have to be pretty stupid to lie about being a medical professional so most likely not!
