30 plants a week

PrawnDumplings · 11/01/2024 07:38

Improving my microbiome and therefore my health and energy is my current aim.

Good gut bacteria helps absorption of nutrients from your food, which supposedly means you have less cravings.

I'm going to list my 30 plants here if anyone wants to join me.

Fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, spices all count 🍆🍑🍌🍊🍎🍓🍍🍒🥑🥒🌱🥔🍋🍉🌽🥙🥦

@PrawnDumplings how did days 6 and 7 go?

I ended up repeating some things so only added Oats & hazelnuts & padron peppers after 39. So finished up on 42.

Got to the point where you need to finish up what's in the fridge 🤷🏻‍♀️

But am happy with that.

This is a great thread, for the last five years I’ve been eating the brightest rainbow diet I can. I don’t count weekly but do regularly clock up 16 types (not portions) of fruit and veg each day. I also love nuts and seeds.

Awesome! 🌈

Using up what is in the fridge is part of the game. No point buying food to throw away.

Wanttolikekimchee · 23/01/2024 22:53

Last two days:

  1. pear
  2. oats
  3. peanut butter
  4. coffee
  5. satsuma
  6. chickpeas
  7. white onions
  8. dried prunes
  9. tomatoes
  10. cinnamon
  11. coriander, fresh and powdered
  12. chilli flakes
  13. broccoli
  14. apple
  15. ground ginger
Wanttolikekimchee · 23/01/2024 22:58

Does peanut butter count?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2024 01:00

I'd have thought so.

hollyhola · 24/01/2024 07:35

From Sunday to last night I'm up to 17 so a good start but now have kind of exhausted most of the different plants we have in.

I could get a few more with tea, beetroot and gherkins but after that I think I'll be doubling up on what we already have and need to use up.

20 over the course of a week and a decent dose of some of those portions has to be good though right?

AnotherAdventFridge · 24/01/2024 08:56

20 over a week is great @hollyhola . Repeats are a way of life. The first three days looks amazing and then all of a sudden you are just adding a couple of things a day.

When you do next week, can you make it to 21 and have the list look a little bit different.

Itisnearlyspring · 24/01/2024 12:16

Lunch today hit 23 with a use up of left over dinner

Mixed leaves with carrot, beetroot, walnuts, mixed sprouts (5)
Avocado with sumac and chicken with curry powder/greek yoghurt on rye (4)
Brown and wild rice with cinamon, crushed chia, hemp and Flax seeds (6)
Saukercrat (ginger, cabbage) (2)
Lentils with leek and fennel seeds (3)
Cabbage fried with tumeric, cinnamon and cloves (3)
Total 23 and feeling very full
Might manage some dark chocolate to get to 24!

That's the prettiest leftovers ever @Itisnearlyspring .

Leftovers for lunch too here. Pitta bread stuffed with left over curry (aubergine, mushroom, tamarind, coconut plus spices [4]) and dal (two types of lentils, onions, garlic, ginger, carrot, parsnip and spices [7]) plus a slightly over ripe avocado [8] and half a red pepper [9] for crunch. No salad or pretty pictures because I was ravenous after a long walk with the dog.

WeirdPookah · 24/01/2024 13:03

At 36 for the week so far, with the wild-card of trying a tin of Welsh Laverbread (seaweed). Won't be something I need to carry across to my spreadsheet next year!

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 24/01/2024 13:45

Does Almond Biscotti count?

seriously though, I need to read the thread to fully understand how the counting works & stop being a carby twat!!

I'll be back!! (When I've finished the biscotti)

AnotherAdventFridge · 24/01/2024 15:44

Thank you for mentioning spreadsheets @WeirdPookah , the perfect procrastination project.
It comes to a lot of plants if you think about stuff you probably cover in a year.

Now I just need to audit the spice cupboard

Really @PrawnDumplings you should not encourage the nerdiness. Improved version ready to go.

Nonsense, nerdiness is a virtue.

Er... what are drumsticks in this context?Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2024 22:04

That's a new one on me! Are they available tinned or what?

AnotherAdventFridge · 24/01/2024 22:08

From the Asian shop. I have a slight issue with buying vegetables I've never seen before and then working out how to cook them. These were a successful episode.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/01/2024 23:05

1 Mushrooms
2 Red onion
3 Cherry tomatoes
4 Spinach
5 Rocket
6 Watercress
7 Home-made wholemeal bread
8 Tomato salsa / tomato soup
9 Raspberries
10 Stawberries
11 Blueberries
12 Blackcurrants
13 Celery
14 Banana
15 Almonds
16 Pistachios
17 Cocoa powder/ dark chocolate
18 Mixed herbs
19 Black pepper
20 Green peppers
21 Rasins (mince pies count right?)
22 Garlic

I haven't even got to having a curry yet.

It's definitely an interesting way to think about food and broadening nutrition.

WeirdPookah · 25/01/2024 14:08

I think if I counted every single spice I use I would feel like I was cheating myself with the numbers, it feels disingenuous to me.

I'm at 41 for the week. Reminding myself to diversify meant I also used up some mushrooms from last week that needed using to add 1 for today.

I think they say that when using herbs is counts as 1/4
