30 plants a week

PrawnDumplings · 11/01/2024 07:38

Improving my microbiome and therefore my health and energy is my current aim.

Good gut bacteria helps absorption of nutrients from your food, which supposedly means you have less cravings.

I'm going to list my 30 plants here if anyone wants to join me.

Fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, spices all count 🍆🍑🍌🍊🍎🍓🍍🍒🥑🥒🌱🥔🍋🍉🌽🥙🥦

I'm quite surprised am nearly there. Will need to shop for more plants today.

I really hope this improves my energy levels. It would be nice to share recipes here too. If anyone is keen?

Chick peas and hummus are the same thing (although hummus has some sesame paste and garlic in it) so you’re still at 27

Apples pears corn

not trying to be a smart arse. I hope you succeed 😀

AnotherAdventFridge · 11/01/2024 08:48

But on the other hand you can count peppers by colour...red pepper, yellow pepper, green pepper.

Frozen stir fry veggies are a good way to boost your numbers.

Ha! I did think that about the humous. But the chickpeas were from a jar and baked and the homous involves tahini. So I should change that to tahini 👍

Stir fry is a great idea! I have some tofu in the fridge.

I have eaten 2 colours of pepper and also forgot avocado and paprika so will add. Thanks ☺️

I've had

Walnuts
Spinach
Broccoli
Carrots
Red cabbage
Onion
Flaxseed
Banana
Strawberries
Blueberries
Cherries
Redcurrants
Tomatoes
Peas
Sweetcorn
Beetroot
Gogi berries

I'm sure I've missed some off. I have a morning smoothie where I try to tick off as many of the daily dozen as possible, which helps!

WeirdPookah · 11/01/2024 11:48

I've been keeping track of this for a couple of years on a spreadsheet!

I aim for 40 a week, have hit 50 quite a few times. I don't count every herb and spice separately, but have a count of 1 each for herbs and spices in my chart. We eat lots of variety of them always, so I just count that.

As somebody mentioned, counting different colours counts as the nutrient profiles are different, so using red and white onions in a dish gives you 2.

I'm currently at 41 plant food for the week so far.

O wonder if blitzing fruit / veg interferes with how much it helps your gut? Maybe you lose the fibre?

My secret weapon is home made granola involving oats, 5 types of seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, flax, chia, sesame) and 7 types of nuts (hazelnut, brazil, pecan, almond, cashew, pistachio, macadamia) plus 4 types of dried fruit (figs, dates, apricots and cranberries). With yoghurt, kefir and some mixed fresh or defrosted fruit that starts the day with 18-20 different plants plus lots of good bacteria. Delicious too!

ApolloandDaphne · 11/01/2024 17:53

I am on week 32 of eating this way.

Over time a number of things have evolved.

  • I am much, much, healthier, with a great deal more energy
  • I have almost become vegetarian (with still just a little fish in the mix)
  • My diet is much more colourful and interesting
  • I have totally gone off beige carbs
  • I had a few weeks with a lot of fruit in the mix in the form of smoothies, but subsequently realised that it was causing a fructose overload
  • Ditto several weeks with too many nuts, just to try and reach my 30
  • Now, I am more balanced, not obsessing about whether I hit 30 every week. I invariably do (I still list every week) but don’t worry if not.

The only thing I would say, seeing as you have put this in ‘Weight Loss chat’ is that I have not lost any weight at all 😂🤣

Disasterclass · 11/01/2024 18:42

Interesting. I could do at having a go at this as I eat a fair amount of fruit and vegetables usually but tend to eat the same things. This week:
Blueberries
Apples
Satsumas
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Salad leaves
Yellow pepper
Red pepper
Green pepper
Courgette
Carrot
Mushrooms
Chickpeas
Lentils
Black beans
Sunflower, hemp, pumpkin and linseeds
Coriander
Haven't included dry herbs

Better than I thought but need to get out of the rut of buying courgettes, peppers, mushrooms and carrots every week and get more of a mix

Meadowfinch · 11/01/2024 18:49

So far this week, 27 ... with 2 days to go

Wheat
Coffee
onion
cannellini beans
kidney beans
tomato
garlic
celery
lettuce
beetroot
cucumber
satsuma
oats
apple
banana
pear
sultanas
green olives
lemon
baked beans
green lentils
Swede
sprouts
broccoli
peas
sweetcorn
rice
I'm not trying to lose weight, but since I started this, I haven't had a cold or sniffle.

I'm liking focusing on "what more (plants) can I eat?" Instead of "what can't I eat"

Definitely doing it for health reasons. And more energy. Weight loss would be nice though. That's more about volume I guess.

I had no idea that tea, coffee ans chocolate count. Or that different colour of same fruit or veg count...

I have been trying to ensure we meet this for at least a year now. I haven't lost weight but I do feel that our digestive systems all seem to work wel and none of us are bloated.

This week so far (since monday)

  1. Oats
  2. Strawberries
  3. Cranberries
  4. Blackberries
  5. Bananas
  6. Orange juice
  7. Apple juice
  8. Flaxseed
  9. Pineapple
10. Mango 11. Lime (Thats just from morning smoothies). 12. Ginger 13 garlic 14 lemon 15 onion 16 tomatoes 17 chilli (also chilli flakes) 18 peanut butter (no added palm oil or sugar so I think ot counts?) 19 almonds (probably other nuts for ds in protein bars but won't count them here) 20 tea 21 coffee 22 chocolate 23 red peppers 24 yellow peppers 25 cannellini beans 26 paprika (hot and smoked) 27 oregano 28 fennel seeds 29 cumin 30 tumeric 31 mushrooms 32 carrots 33 tenderstem broccoli 34 potatoes 35 leeks 36 green beans 37 lentils

Also flour, white bread, sourdough bread, white pasta, paella rice. But I think I remember reading that processed grains like this don't count? So wholewheat bread or pasta would be fine but not the white ones that I am trying to wean us off? Sourdough maybe does? Not sure.

Do vinegars count? Have used balsamic and red wine vinegar. Also olive oil

In the fridge/cupboard that I expect to use between now and Sunday are rocket, lettuce, butternut, avocado, baby corn, sweetcorn.

rubydoobydoo · 11/01/2024 22:23

1.Banana

  1. Apple
  2. Spinach
  3. Cucumber
  4. Ginger
  5. Beetroot
  6. Redcurrants
  7. Blackcurrants
  8. Blueberries
10. Strawberries 11. Blackberries 13. Onions 14. Oats 15. Cacao powder 16. Sweet potato 17. Carrots 18. Leek 19. Celery 20. Lentils 21. Green split peas 22. Pearl barley 23. Chia seeds 24. Flaxseed 25. Goji berries 26. Coffee 27. Dried prunes 28. Dried figs 29. Almonds 30. Red kidney beans 31. Tomatoes

That's without checking the ingredients in the super berries powder and super greens powder I alternate in smoothies so there will be a few more, I'm doing better than I thought!

Edited to add I haven't counted the spices I use in cooking either!
