30 plants a week

PrawnDumplings · 11/01/2024 07:38

Improving my microbiome and therefore my health and energy is my current aim.

Good gut bacteria helps absorption of nutrients from your food, which supposedly means you have less cravings.

I'm going to list my 30 plants here if anyone wants to join me.

Fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, spices all count 🍆🍑🍌🍊🍎🍓🍍🍒🥑🥒🌱🥔🍋🍉🌽🥙🥦

Fennel seeds
Cauliflower
Pumpkin seeds

SpongeBlobSquareFace · 12/01/2024 18:27

All my berries are frozen. I wouldn't buy out of season.
I think herbs and spices count as a quarter.
I may do overnight oats in honour of this thread using gf oats, soya milk, more frozen berries, almonds pumpkin seeds and pistachios. Yay. I've run out of flax seeds and chia.

Stealthsquirrelnutkin...what is this Zoe project? Is it something I've somehow been oblivious to while everyone else has known about it?!

Search for the "ZOE Science & Nutrition Podcast", it's a fabulous resource, all the information about the project is there, and they interview different scientists who explain all kinds of really interesting stuff about their latest research.

What I am confused about is whether it is optimal to choose a different 30+ each week or if it is ok or to stick with the same ones. I end eating the same meals on rotation a lot so although I get the 30 plus they do look pretty similar each week.

I realise the gut bacteria like diversity but there seem to be some that are adapted to a specific food so if you only eat it a few times will they die off?

If is funny that since I started eating the zoe way I now crave very specific foods all the time e.g roquefort and Bell Peppers and am wondering if I have specific bacteria driving these cravings.

That's weird about the Roquefort. Maybe it's the bacteria in it you're wanting.

I think I will start my week on Sunday as that seems to be the day of transition here.
No breakfast I was on the farm building a path

Late lunch
Fishfinger sandwich with a salad
1 white cabbage
2 white onion
3 orange carrot
4 jalapeños
5 gherkins
6 sauerkraut
7 chickpeas

Even later dinner
Seitan red stew with rice

8 red onion
9 garlic
10 red peppers (fresh and roasted from a jar)
11 okra
12 red rice
13 puy lentils
14 tomatoes
15 a lot of spices with an outrageous amount of paprika ( I'll allow 2 a week towards spices as we get through a lot).
16 Basmati rice
There's the option to add yesterdays green dish- five lots of green leafy veg from the bottom of the fridge cooked in a mustard sauce.
I'm not adding wheat today (seitan and french stick) as there will be proper bread at some point this week.

CormorantStrikesBack · 14/01/2024 19:05

Place marking so I can join in tomorrow. I read about this only yesterday and am very excited to start!

Love51 · 15/01/2024 13:03

Starting a new week now. Breakfast (today and most days!) 4 berries, oats, flax and chia (7). Lunch, mixed beans (6) plus aubergine, courgette, tinned tomatoes, garlic, onion and peppers and herbs (7) with quinoa. Apple and banana. Twenty three so far.
There is a law of diminishing returns here. I won't be adding new items in double figures for the rest of the week!

PrawnDumplings · 15/01/2024 22:20

What an interesting idea I will try this tomorrow and see if I can get my daughter involved to help her vary her diet. No point asking DH as he eats very bland samey diet

Mine does too. But he's quite liking the competitive counting! 🤣

I tend to think you can choose to add one of chocolate, coffee or tea, it just reminds you to vary drinks and consume things like green tea.

Green stuff and mushrooms in mustard and caraway sauce
19 Spring greens
20 Black kale
sauerkraut (already counted)
21 White sprouting broccoli
22 Chinese leaves
23 Mushrooms

Well stuffed wrap with homemade pesto
24 Walnuts
25 Cashews
26 Basil
27 Spinach
28 Avocado
Slaw
White cabbage ( already counted)
Red onion ( already counted)
Sauerkraut (already counted)
29 Purple carrot
30 Pink stripy beetroot
Ran out of mayo Shock so make a dressing with the last jarred pepper, olive oil and cider vinegar. It is a very red slaw.

Got to thirty in two days. Looking at the fridge contents I'm only going to get a bit higher this week. The slaw will last a few days, ditto the pesto. It can be easy to get high numbers the first few days but then you tend to do a lot of repeats until it is time to go shopping again.

Lavenderosemary · 16/01/2024 11:51

n my smoothie and budda-ish salad for tomorrow I have

1 Cinnamon

2 Tumeric

3 Beetroot

5 gogi berries

6 strawberry

7 raspberry

8 blueberry

9 black cherry

10 spinach

11 mango

12 pineapple

13 redcurrants

14 romaine lettuce

15 cherry tomatoes

17 red onion

18 sunflower seeds

19 chia

20 - 25 5 bean salad

26 olives

27 cucumber

28 red pepper

29 Brazil nuts

30 cashew nuts

31 almonds

As Love51 said...this won't be matched again this week 😀

AnotherAdventFridge · 16/01/2024 11:56

Repeats are becoming an issue. There are 10+ plants in here.

Adding in whole wheat, spinach, carrot, lettuce, cucumber, lentils. 23 add 6 is 29. Two days in and I'm almost there!

I've just realised the purpose of this is not weight loss but related to the gut. I've never had any sort of gut issues (lifelong vegetarian may be the cause) so I guess I can skip this one 😅

Edited

@waistchallenge it is related to gut biome. Gut biome keeps turning up in research as a holistic health measure, heart disease and more.
It is not about how you poop, though some choose to sign up to Zoe and get a sample analysed. It is more about taking responsibility for what you eat and using the thirty a week to encourage eating a diverse range of healthy food. So it can knock onto weight.

Don't skip out you sound like a good seasonal eater. I don't want to be the only nerd who eats medlar.

Bubbles254 · 16/01/2024 19:41

@waistchallenge If you attract the right gut microbiome it makes it so much easier to loose weight as they are key in the breakdown of food and its absorption.
