If you have a bit more to lose and will be doing this for a while and want a nice supportive crowd to hang out with while you're at it this might be the thread for you.

@slamfightbrightlight sorry didn't mean it to come across as a lecture.

Chocolate is one of the reasons I like counting calories. The first time in my adult life I ate a chocolate bar was a 2 stick kit kat at a first aid course. I looked at it and had that many calories spare still in my daily target and was just wow ok I can have this and not feel the least bit bad about it.

Currently eating warrior crunch bars bars for my chocolate fix, low sugar, high protein. You have to watch out as like any chocolate they're calorie dense but also really filling.

I'm back on writing everything down, and whilst I'm exceedung the daily calories on mfp, I am cutting back and really thinking about my food.
I had PT yesterday and I've got an injury which would ease considerably if I lost weight.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 18/01/2024 13:28

Sorry that SHOULD have said...

@slslamfightbrightlight this is me exactly! I have a really good understanding of nutrition and my son has an amazing balanced diet and eats fresh home cooked nutritious food - as do I. If only I could just stick with that lovely home cooked food and forget the cappuccino and biscuits!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 18/01/2024 13:33

@stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk that's really interesting as I feel much the same. I aspire to be a size 16 really which is still overweight I know, but it feels realistic and I remember feeling good and energetic at that size. Size 8 is so alien I honestly can't even picture what I'd look like

My target weight is where it is for the same reason - I remember feeling reasonably fit and active at size 14-16, but I have no memory of being an adult right down in the 'healthy' weight category and I don't even know what size I'd be... I'd need a whole new wardrobe. At the moment I am just aiming to get comfortably into my size 14 stuff from a few years ago.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 18/01/2024 13:45

@Morred I think it's more achievable this way too. To target myself to get to an 8 from an 18/20 seems so unrealistic I know I'll fail. 14-16 feels far more likely.

Realist2022 · 18/01/2024 14:30

I think one of the first things though is understanding where the challenge for you comes from though isn't it? For me, it is bread, cheese, crisps, potatoes but mainly portion sizes for all of those things. Even now, proactively trying to lose weight I am still eating too large portion size I just have to take that into account when calorie counting and recognise that a 'normal' person would have less. It is a constant battle ....

I was going to say, that’s impressive going to make it to adulthood without eating chocolate 😁

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 18/01/2024 16:35

@slamfightbrightlight an impressively stupid typo 😂. Sometimes my brain goes faster than my fingers and I miss parts of a sentence.

Can I join please? I started on the 1st Jan.

SW: 212lb
CW: 204lb

Hoping to get to 200lb by the end of Jan. My goal is to get into a size 10/12 and I am 37.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 18/01/2024 21:23

hey there @Motiv8ed sure the 'rules' such as they are are inspired by thumpers mum, 'if you can't say anything nice don't say anything' the point is to be positive and supportive. Perseverance and a sense of humour are the best virtues here I think.

Welcome and good luck.

@Sparklyhat

would writing a list of the benefits and disadvantages of losing weight help you? Or having something to look forward to, looking up pictures of a holiday or clothes or something you fancy for when you reach your goal? Eating better and less snacks should save some money.

Normally I lose weight through calorie counting but that isn’t sustainable for life so trying the plate method. At lunch and dinner half a plate needs to be veg. Of the remaining half, more protein than carbs. At breakfast at least as much protein as carbs. Then trying to cut out snacking or make it a piece of fruit instead of crisps.

I have also found that there are some foods I just can’t buy, Pom bears for one. They’re low calorie but I just can’t stick to one bag whereas I can with other crisps.

KrazyboutKillian · 19/01/2024 09:20

Morning all , no change from my last posting but as I weigh daily I was disheartened to see the scales stay pretty much the same , but when I checked I gave lost 3 lb from 10 Jan .
this week was a bit of a disaster tbh , too cold , and filling up on carbs .
last night I bought lots of veg , and will make soups for work next week , I’m also going to swop toast for scrambled eggs for breakfast ,
trying to build in some good habits

KrazyboutKillian · 19/01/2024 09:23

@PotatoFan

yes I can’t buy crisps if any sort
it’s like crack cocaine to me if it’s in the house

hsar200 · 19/01/2024 09:37

I need to go buy some scales I think as I have no idea what I weigh! Loads to lose though!

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 19/01/2024 10:28

@hsar200 I do recommend getting 2 sets of scales a small easy to use kitchen scales to weigh food, and a decent set of bathroom scales.

I measure my weight every day but only keep track of the highest and lowest measurements of the week. You can then compare the highest this week and the lowest this week against the highest and lowest of the previous week.

I find it helps to identify the average trend at which you are burning fat without driving yourself crazy about a single reading.

@KrazyboutKillian building good habits is what it's all about. Your soup plan sounds great.

Need a bit of a hand hold this morning

Anyone got any nsv or good news to share?

I really appreciate joining this thread as loads of threads usually start in January and within 2 weeks have dwindled to nothing as everyone gives up but this has lovely established members as well as newbies, so every time I look there are new posts to read and that really helps me

I'm also not calorie counting as I need to make long term changes. I know what I should eat in large quantities and what should be kept to small ones so now before I eat anything I quickly ask myself how this is going to help me achieve my goal. Soup, veggies etc all good, chocolate cookies? One is a nice taste, a treat and stops me being deprived, cookie number 2 is just going to set me back but not stop me achieving my aim. I think I might finally be on the right track. I have tried so many diets and I can't believe that I could comfortably lose 6st and still not be 'thin'. My DC weighs that much!

I really appreciated what you wrote earlier stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk, it reasonated with me so I'm sorry you're having a tough day today

KrazyboutKillian · 19/01/2024 13:05

@stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk
even if there are no posters at the minute ( working maybe ) you are leading us all from the front ! And you should be proud of that

i actually made the soup veg and lentil , me and dp had for lunch with some left for work next week
even though I say it myself it was yummy 🤤

Gabriella83 · 19/01/2024 13:18

Sorry to hear you're not having a good day@stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk
I agree with you @Penguinpairs I find it motivating to catch up on the posts on this thread. I don't think I'll reach my 3.5lb goal this week which would mean the first stone gone but I should lose something. One positive I've found of cutting the junk out of my diet is I can stay awake all day and don't fall asleep in the afternoon. I have a lot more energy when I am awake too.

PotatoFan · 19/01/2024 13:23

@stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk

the happy scale app is fantastic for showing you the moving average trends etc. you put in your daily weights and it smooths it all out

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 19/01/2024 13:26

Went to Aqua Aerobics yesterday morning and it was a substitute teachers, she was great fun but holy hell she was determined to make us work. My arms are that sore I'm not sure I can lift them over my head!

Will be glad for a bit of respite from this cold weather, find it much more difficult to lean away from stodgy carbs when it's cold, I just want a big bowl of cheesy mash or piping hot chips. I've been having options hot chocolate to keep myself going without killing my calorie count so hopefully that Monday weigh in will show at least a 1lb loss. I have been slacking on drinking water though, it's just not appealing to drink a big glass of cold water when you're freezing your buns off.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 19/01/2024 13:47

thanks everyone.

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain you've inspired me to go get a glass of water as I don't think I've drunk enough today so far. Your class sounds really effective.

@PotatoFan hmm I might have a look for it, it sounds really good but I mostly quite like doing the maths myself as I'm kind of a maths nerd.

@Gabriella83 ooh your first stone mini goal is tantalisingly close!
