If you have a bit more to lose and will be doing this for a while and want a nice supportive crowd to hang out with while you're at it this might be the thread for you.

@Realist2022 well done.

Ah dry jan is hard! I'm a single mum now and it's definitely easier to stick to when there's not another person in the house tempting you!

I did read about dry week instead of dry January. You pick one week for every month to stay sober. If you stick to it that's 3 months worth of sober weeks by the end of the year. I'm hoping to stick to this once dry jan is up!

Ooooh, @Scrabblingaround, that's a great idea to do measurements - shall consider that.

Well done!

I find waist measurements less emotional somehow... not got the same baggage of all those years of dreading the scales...

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 09/01/2024 14:19

I've never had more energy and slept better! definitely sounds like you're doing something right then!

I definitely think sleep plays a big part. If I sleep badly there's no motivation and I crave comfort food.

summerlovingvibes · 09/01/2024 15:50

Feel like I've done well this first week - on day 5 and have been 100% "on it" for 4 of those days with the 5th day just a few syns (Slimming world) over.

So I'm actually excited for weigh in tomorrow evening, would love to stand on the scales having lost 3-4 pounds in the first week!

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 09/01/2024 16:27

Well done @summerlovingvibes fingers crossed for you for tomorrow,

Had my weight management appointment today and I’m so torn. I’m in the program for 6 months now and they’re supposed to be the experts in weight loss, so I should follow their advice, but I’m happier doing things my current way and don’t want to change in the ways suggested. It’s things like start eating breakfast every day (why add calories), start eating fruit (I don’t like it and it spikes my blood sugar), stop counting calories, that kind of stuff.

Onthegrid · 09/01/2024 21:25

Bad day here, first stressful day at work and I reverted to looking for food to picky eat to reduce the stress. It doesn’t work and all I achieved was a sugar slump and extreme tiredness, so then I finished up the Christmas drink that was open.
I had a NHS referral last summer from my doctor but it was just a link to an online programme, no hour long meeting, then I had to start on a specific date. It was of no use to me as it was day 2 of a 3 week holiday.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 09/01/2024 21:39

Bad day here too. And yesterday. I've had three McDonald's in 2 days. Yesterday, I ordered my daughter's burger incorrectly and had that as well as my lunch. So I'll start tomorrow. I did have an active day but was again far too tired for the gym this morning.

@PotatoFan love the name, I am also a huuuge potato fan. Honestly, take their advice but always with a pinch of salt. Fruit is good but if you don't like it, replace it. Breakfast is meant to be good but so is fasting x hours a day. If your way is working, do that and get tips from them.

@Onthegrid that's exactly what I do to relieve stress. It was the first day back, makes sense it would be stressful. Don't worry. Just have a healthy tea and move on. Don't add to the disordered eating by starving or giving up and gorging.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 09/01/2024 21:41

Oh god. I forgot Sunday. 4 McDonald's and a kfc in 3 days.

My aim is to train in the morning. Active day. Healthy foods. Probably no McDonald's. I think I'll do weights in my garage as I think Jack Frost will visit tonight and I don't want to sit in a cold car.

PotatoFan · 09/01/2024 22:41

@NewYearNewPyjamas thanks, unfortunately it’s not the kind of program where I can just do my own thing and ignore the bits of advice I don’t like. I have specific goals they’ve given and I have to send diaries (written or photo) showing I’ve been meeting the goals. The goals are things like eat breakfast, reduce potatoes, start snacking on fruit etc

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 10/01/2024 00:21

Sorry to hear that @PotatoFan I'm disappointed but not surprised that they weren't more helpful.

Maybe make your own goals and keep the food diary even if you don't send it?

@stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk decided to go with all their instructions, show I’m engaging with the support offered and all that. I can decide at the end if I want to make some changes towards how I’d prefer to do it or keep doing it their way. So better find a breakfast…

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 10/01/2024 08:35

makes sense @PotatoFan , I'm sure the advice is good in the sense that it definitely works for some people; I hope you can find a way to make it work for you.

If you can't really stomach breakfast or don't need it, I'd be having a protein shake. A proper one like anabolic gold. DP has it with porridge instead of milk Envy not envy. I sometimes have it with half milk and water but I find I need something to chew otherwise I don't feel like I ate anything.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 10/01/2024 15:15

And the very thought of reducing potatoes 😭

PotatoFan · 10/01/2024 15:26

Had small amount of melon for breakfast today which ticked the eat breakfast and start eating fruit boxes.

For lunch it’s the plate method so half plate veg (had salad), third plate protein (had a chicken breast and a bit of low fat cheese), then a small segment of carbs (had half a small baked potato).

When I had Gestational Diabetes potatoes were a big problem, one of the tricks I did so I could still have them without having too much was to start making tray bakes.

I'd do considerably less potatoes and bulk it out with sliced onions, mushrooms, peppers. Roast it all together so I got a few crispy roast potatoes and lots of the other less carby veg. Make it a full meal by chucking some sausages or chicken breasts into the tray and cooking it all together.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 10/01/2024 16:15

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain oooh that sounds delicious! I shall be stealing that!

Over Christmas, each time we had a roast we cooked 1kg of roast potatoes. I think I ate 900g of roast potatoes 3 times in that week. My family are not bothered by potatoes so I had the lions share.

Alas, that needs to change.

SisterAgatha · 10/01/2024 22:59

Just here to confess I’ve eaten a plate of cheese and crackers. I couldn’t help it, I was within cals today and was still hungry. I’d prepped no sugar jelly for my late night treat but just wanted the cheese. I’ll still weigh on Saturday but if I stay the same I’ll be happy. 🥲

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 10/01/2024 23:26

Tomorrow's a new day @SisterAgatha it sounds like you might well have been under your maintenance calories even if you ate more than you were planning to today.

SisterAgatha · 10/01/2024 23:50

I had a lot of coffees today which is my down fall. I tend to drink my calories (or binge on cheese) 🥲

youre right, tomorrow is a new day 💪🏻 I wonder if I should have a separate target for the rest of the week concerning reducing daily coffees (like a mini challenge) as that might even out the damage done and I’ll still get a small loss.
