Fresh new year, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

PS - In the coming days I’ll post some links which some members might find useful. Feel free to share your own links, recipes and photos too 😊

Went on the scales finally today and it's much much worse than I thought :(

14st 3lb 😭😭😭 I didn't weigh that when I was pregnant. Fgs. How could I hve done this to myself.

Could cry. It's such a big number I just don't know how I'll ever get to a healthy weight - for my height it's 11st 9lb.

I feel bleak.

Hosting OH family today for a Christmas style dinner.

No other way around it. Just going to have to start somewhere. Going for a midway goal and aim to get to to 13st by 1/3/23. Is that realistic? Achievable?

Starting on 1/1/23:

  • Walk the dog daily.
  • Yogurt and musli for breakfast.
  • Fish and veg for lunch or soup.
  • Family dinner but portion controlled for me.
  • Run 3 x week.
  • Weight train once a week.
Throwaway1066 · 30/12/2022 09:35

Hello! Can I join you all please?
Ive gone over 12st this month and if I put on anymore weight I will definitely go up a dress size 😭

I’ve lost weight before with reduced meal sizes and cutting out snacks. I just need to stick with it!

Weirdly my weight gain has started to go to my thighs, previously it was always my stomach. I wonder if that’s hormonal?

CW - 12st 3lbs
GW - 10st anything!

buzzofthebumblebee · 30/12/2022 10:20

Looking forward to joining you all on 1st Jan. Thank you OP for this wonderful thread.

AutisticLegoLover · 30/12/2022 11:18

I've put on 2lbs since Christmas Eve which will be mainly water retention due to eating too much salt, and my period. I'm
62.4kg and my goal is 60kg for the immediate future.

FurForksSake · 30/12/2022 11:22

I've done the cliche and re joined the gym. I'm having physio and been told I must exercise regularly and the gym membership has worked before. They offer classes and swimming so I'll aim to work up to

  • spinning once a week
  • Pilates or similar once a week
  • swimming once a week (or aqua)
Not sure that's enough but it's better than zero!
Allthegoodnamestakken · 30/12/2022 11:49

Whoops I was still posting on the old December thread! Thankyou as always for setting this up @TheRealHousewife
Checking in to this one but going to be pretty busy travelling for work in January so hoping I don't do to much damage. Ending this year on 66.2kg which is a whole 10kg less than I weighed 6 months ago when I joined these threads. DH took a picture of me yesterday just randomly as I was playing with the dogs and I can't believe how good I looked in it, 6 months ago even posed photos would make me want to cry let alone ones where I didn't know they where being taken to suck in my tummy and angle my jaw.
around 5 or 6kg more to loose next year!

MilesFlora · 30/12/2022 13:41

Thanks @TheRealHousewife for thread, I’d love to join in!
Lovely to see so many of us at different ages and stages.
I lost 22lbs 2 years ago using Noom and have kept the bulk of it off but am definitely up 7/8 lbs. I would love to lose most of that half stone by end of Feb as have family occasion - and then keep it off. It has crept up since Halloween - I am a nibbler and snacker with a sweet tooth.
Plan to do Noom again, still
have the app (not subscribing again - will
post here for accountability!) - just basically need to stick to about 1200 cals a day. I know what to do - just need to do it!!! Love walking my dog every day so that exercise is sorted.
Will weigh in next Wed (am afraid of scales!) but have already begun eating sensibly.
good luck to all! ☘️

fallfallfall · 30/12/2022 14:58

@Allthegoodnamestakken well done!
travel safe and post when you can.

HappinessDragon · 30/12/2022 15:27

Hi everyone. I'd love to join please.
I'm aiming to lose about 4 stone/56lbs. I'm into bio hacking so I'll be trying lots of supplements and monitoring my progress.
I've just had a delivery of thermogenics that someone at work swears by.
I'm going to try high protein, lower carb (Not low or no), increased veg on the plate. Lots of flavour.
I've just prepped 10kg chicken breasts for quick lunches and dinners
Meal replacement shakes for very busy days.
I work long hours and am changing roles with more travel in a couple of months so lose weight before I meet new colleagues and be prepared for the routine change so I don't fall down a fast food rabbit hole when travelling for work.
Increased exercise, particularly on WFH days.
I'm going to use the lose it app to log.

Good luck everyone!

Walkingbkwrm · 30/12/2022 20:33

I’d like to join too but not starting properly until Jan.

Lots of weight to lose (several stone) but focusing on small steps rather than the very depressing large number.

My major strategy is to get more sleep - DH both doesn’t get back from work until late and is a night owl and I have to get up at 6am usually so I have been tempted into not getting my 8hrs and I think it’s the main reason I struggled with the weight loss last year. I work very flexible hours so going to try fitting in an early afternoon 30 min nap. Also not snacking in the evenings but hoping that will reduce naturally if I’m a bit less tired.

Good luck to everyone who has started already.

fallfallfall · 31/12/2022 04:05

@HappinessDragon that sounds very cool! I look forward to hearing all about this.

Allthegoodnamestakken · 31/12/2022 05:35

@HappinessDragon that sounds really interesting. I'm also someone who falls off the wagon when travelling for work. Mainly because the areas I travel to are often get what you're given and it's likely fried but also lack of planning on my part.
@Walkingbkwrm more sleep is an excellent start, so easy to eat crap when you're tired and want a quick pick me up

Allthegoodnamestakken · 31/12/2022 05:37

Forgot todays menu
Lunch - leftover Christmas ham probably as a salad
Dinner - no idea as we are going to a friends
Dinner will probably include a few glasses of wine. I've however really gone of drinking the last couple of months when previously I could happily put away a bottle so I might just roll with that and sip one glass all night

TheRealHousewife · 31/12/2022 07:30

Good Morning

Welcome to the thread @Plantmoretrees86 @Throwaway1066 @Walkingbkwrm @HappinessDragon @MilesFlora @FurForksSake Well done on on taking the first step 👏👏👏 Getting in the right head space and setting your intentions will help you on your way!

@emptythelitterbox I don’t remember if you’ve posted your starting weight or not (you absolutely don’t have too!) but don’t get disheartened if you don’t meet January’s goal of 7lbs. It depends on how much you have to lose, age, exercise, any health conditions, meds, hormones etc. I say this from experience. I started these thread about 5 years ago and the initial ones were based on a shared goal of losing 7lbs a month, every month. No one ever did. That’s not saying you won’t but I don’t want you to get discouraged if it doesn’t happen. As long as the trajectory over time is downwards you’re winning 👍

@HappinessDragon The supplements sounds exciting. I’m all for higher protein, lower carb👌 Keep people posted as you’ve generated genuine interest 👍. Good luck!

@Itsnotallblackandwhite Well done on joining the gym! Diarising the sessions, physically writing them into your schedule could help in getting them done 😬

@ndo4000 Noom is expensive but it’s your choice and it’s worked for @MilesFlora in the past. Some people like (and benefit from) the structured approach. That said I think people can access psychological support via threads like this and reading the vast plethora of free stuff on line. A lot of it is about educating yourself on nutrition and portion control, controlling blood sugars to avoid cravings and keeping satiated and satisfied 👍

@MilesFlora Well done on losing the weight. You’ll soon rid yourself of the gain. You’ve done it before 👍

@Allthegoodnamestakken Dont worry the December thread is still running with today being the last day. I’ll pop over and enter my final post on there shortly.

Menu
Meal 1 - Chicken omelette attached to a corn tortilla.
Meal 2 - New Year Eve Special. Ribeye steak, garden peas, home made onion rings, home made fat chips and pepper sauce. Champagne 🥂
Tea, black coffee and water. A lot of water 😬
Exercise
Session 1 - Walking Vid, Lesley Sansone.
Session 2 - Hand weights.

Heres Wishing you all a great time tonight (for those celebrating, I realise not everyone does) and enjoy all the great opportunities the New Year will bring. If it doesn’t bring any, make your own! 🥂🔔🥳💕

Ooh @TheRealHousewife, I’m licking my lips at your NYE dinner😋

I'm doing a body pump class this morning🏋
breakfast is Greek yoghurt with berries and seeds
lunch will be soup and salad
evening - party type food and a glass or two of champagne

I'm unusually excited about the New Year 🎉

Brieandbeetroot · 31/12/2022 10:24

Morning all. I weighed in on Wednesday - 151 lbs, so 18 pounds to lose to goal weight. It seems impossible but I'm determined. My biggest issue is snacking and portion size. I'm an active person and happy to exercise, I cook from scratch almost all the time and love healthy food and meals. But I'm terrible at "rewarding" myself with treats! I am also doing a no spend challenge in January to try and beat the coffee and pastry on the way to work habit. Anyone have any good tips for battling a treat reward mentality?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/12/2022 10:57

Just went for a run with dh, and oh god I am feeling very unfit! Today/tonight is going to be one final hurrah and then bring on Jan 1st!

HappinessDragon · 31/12/2022 11:05

Hi everyone. I've just had a sneaky NY Eve weigh in before I start properly tomorrow. Not as bad as a I feared, 3lb gain over the last two weeks which could (Should!) have been much worse as I appear to have had a staple diet of sausage rolls, mince pies, sauvignon blanc and cheese with a side of bugger all movement.
I'm popping to the asian supermarket later for lots of fresh herbs and the butchers for bones to make stock - How on earth does anyone work out the calories in Home made stock?
Tomorrow I want to hit the ground running (Not literally. Can't run.)
I'm a bit too much 'All or nothing' so am desperate not to go on to that minefield this year. I'm already thinking of all the Christmas food not eaten yet and thinking I either binge on it all next week and start the week after or throw it all away. Neither option is terribly clever so need to work on 'a bit of what you fancy does you good' rather than '3 kg of cheese and 3 bottles of prosecco prevents waste' or 'BIN IT! YOU DESERVE NOTHING!'
@Brieandbeetroot I have a 'luxuries' saving account on my bank app and whenever I'm on the way to work and thinking I'll 'treat' myself to a coffee and breakfast, if I then don't, I pop the money I would have spent straight into my 'luxuries' account. It soon adds up and is very motivating. I do the same with lunch from the staff canteen etc.
@Allthegoodnamestakken I've got a portable blender arriving any day. I have shaker cups but I thought a USB charged blender would give me a bit more option. I have some meal replacement shakes to keep in my bag/car and I'm stocking up on things like jerky, scratchings etc for snacks. I think the hardest is keeping the water up when travelling - public loos etc aren't always nice and if I'm stuck in traffic after 2 litres of water........🙀
@TheRealHousewife and @fallfallfall I'm really excited to have found all you guys. I think you are all so motivating.

Hope everyone has a lovely evening tonight, whatever you get up to!

FurForksSake · 31/12/2022 11:22

Second gall bladder flair in three days, so eating today will be minimal. Which is a shame as I've bought a huge amount of buffet food for tonight as we have family coming.

I haven't put on as much as in previous years over Christmas, but I often find I put on more in January to "finish things up". So I'm going to be cautious and remind myself I can have treats and make them last to Easter.

Amazonmulu · 31/12/2022 11:50

Morning everyone!

Odd question but does anyone have an air fryer and does it help with dieting by reducing oil used in cooking? Just don't know if to believe the hype 🙈

menomonster · 31/12/2022 12:27

How wonderful to see so much support and contributions on this thread😍, I love reading everybody's experiences and ideas. I have had a few days of a lot of going out and meeting up and eating with various friends and family, but I found that just thinking about being more mindful has already helped in not indulging as much as I would have probably otherwise, which felt really good, and I am looking forward to starting the new year with a positive mindset.

I am going out tonight to a party, and then plan to start properly with all of this on Monday.

Have a great evening everyone and look forward to a positive start to 2023!

Hi. I do indeed have one and when I remember I have it, it's fab. I just keep forgetting I have it, so I shall make a point of using it more!
From what I understand, unless you want one with loads of extra functions, they are much of a muchness. I bought mine from Costco for about £50 but I have friends who has spent about 3 times that for fancy functions that they don't seem to use.

Acronymsandinitialisms · 31/12/2022 12:53

I have a school reunion in March. I've signed up but I won't go if I'm still over 11 stone. I'm hoping this will motivate me.

@HappinessDragon that's good to know! Do you think it helps your health and fitness journey?

I think it could do if I use it more although it depends on what you put in it of course. I've used it for home made chips mainly but I've also made them in the oven for healthy fish and chips and my family loved it. I swear by silicon sheets to use in the oven to cut right back on oil.
Silicon sheet sprayed lightly with oil, pop your home made chips on, another spray, into the oven. After about ten mins, pop some fish fillets in, again on silicon and lightly sprayed. Cook some frozen peas and then drain and smash them up a bit with a splash of milk and butter or low fat spread or my favourite, Butter buds. You can buy them online.
