10st plus to lose - part 2

ShinyPikachu · 22/11/2022 22:53

A really unimaginative title but the old thread is almost full and we don't want to lose people who have joined us already.

Anyone else with a large amount to lose is more than welcome to join us, we're a friendly bunch and whatever way you're trying, that doesn't matter to us. It's about the results and more importantly the support.

That's brilliant @DuckWithOneWing

It really is the little things like that that mean so much. Smile

Wow that must feel amazing @DuckWithOneWing

Echoes89 · 10/12/2022 09:29

Hope everyone is having fun this weekend despite the fact it's bloody freezing
Just thought I'd weigh in, just a little bit down on the scales but it's better than putting on, or staying the same

SW - 17st 3lbs
CW - 12st 8.25lbs
GW - 10st 6lbs

ShinyPikachu · 10/12/2022 11:21

Well done Echoes!

I'm not hopeful for weigh in this week for me but I might try to aim just to maintain for the rest of the year now. We just have too much socialisation coming up and I want to enjoy myself.

I need to be REALLY strict with myself in January though. It's really depressing me that I still haven't lost my lockdown weight gain (which was honestly around 3 stones if not more). I've always had low blood pressure but the last few times it's been checked it's been more normal to high so I know it must be from the weight gain. Sad

DuckWithOneWing · 11/12/2022 11:49

Thanks everyone! I don't believe how much I've lost so it's only when I see it that it actually becomes real.

@ShinyPikachu maintaining is a goal in itself, and it's definitely better than gaining! So you can try to stick to your plan on the days you're not busy, but when you are you can relax a bit. Then next year everything will be easier as everyone wants to lose weight and the shops will be full of offers on healthier options, so you can amaze yourself with your January progress.

ShinyPikachu · 12/12/2022 08:50

Thanks @DuckWithOneWing and yes, maintaining is definitely better than gaining.

I maintained again today, and considering I'm on the period from hell again (which started around a week earlier than I expected) I'm going to definitely take that as a win this week. I won't be back at Pilates until next year now as it's too icy outside for me to safely walk to class and classes stop soon for their winter break anyway so I need to move the coffee table and get my mat out for some online classes this week.

Can I join? Really struggling with my weight just now

Of course you can @Bettybooboo13 - welcome! We're a small but friendly group and always here to support others who need it. Smile

Welcome @Bettybooboo13 it's a long road when you have a lot to lose. But it's nice when you've got others on the same journey
Have you already started?

DuckWithOneWing · 12/12/2022 14:01

Hi @Bettybooboo13 welcome to the group! We all just do our own thing - we have the common aim of losing large amounts of weight, but aren't all following the same methods to get there. I'm mainly counting calories but whatever you want to do you'll fit right in.

Bettybooboo13 · 12/12/2022 16:20

Thank you... I'm not sure which method to use

Welcome..

Have you tried anything in the past? Has anyhring worked better than others?

DuckWithOneWing · 14/12/2022 09:57

@Bettybooboo13 the good thing about being at the start is that you can choose anything, see how it works for you, and then swap to something else later if you change your mind. Some people prefer going to groups, so something like Slimming World or Weight Watchers - and you can probably get offers for joining over the new year. I like calorie counting, because I can eat whatever I like as long as it fits my daily goal. The downside is that it can make eating out trickier (although it's easier now restaurants have calories on the menu) as you never quite know how many calories are in the food. Some people love meal replacements, like Slim Fast shakes or Exante because it takes the hassle out of deciding what to eat but I wanted to eat actual food so it didn't appeal to me.
So pick something, try it for a while, then see what you like and don't like.
You'll also need some method of tracking your weight. I use an app called Monitor Your Weight, but there are loads of others. If you've got iPhone, Happy Scale is supposed to be good. You can just use a notebook and work out your losses yourself.

I've had a change of plan. I realised today that I am 15st 1lb, so I am soooooo close to being in the 14s. My plan is that January 1st, I will be there. The smallest increment my scales weigh is 1/4lb, so I need to lose 1 1/4lb to get there. That seems achieveable!

Oh thank you and well done. I think I might try calorie counting, but I need some decent scales first. Can anyone recommend some? Budget friendly if possible DaffodilSmile

DuckWithOneWing · 18/12/2022 12:59

It's the start of Hannukah, and my partner has got so excited about frying stuff that I think I'll be lucky to escape this week with less than a 6lb gain. I'm going to a party later, but won't be drinking as I'm driving so that will limit some of the calories at least.

@Bettybooboo13 for weighing people or food? We have these kitchen scales which seem fine, and you can add one thing then zero it to add something else easily. We just have basic bathroom scales, although you can get fancier ones that are supposed to measure body fat percentage and thigs if you want to. I think we just got ours from Argos.

ShinyPikachu · 19/12/2022 19:44

Happy Hannukah @DuckWithOneWing

@Bettybooboo13 - if you mean bathroom scales I have some WeightWatchers branded ones. I've never done WW but they come with their own app which saves all the info on there so it's handy for me to not have to remember the numbers. I think it was Argos I got them from but I can't remember for sure now.

If you mean kitchen ones then I have a flat digital set from Tesco I think it was. They weren't expensive but they're good. They don't have their own bowl so you can just put whatever plate or bowl you're using on them (although big plates block the display because of the size of them.)

I'm calorie counting too and using the NutraCheck app to track everything. I paid £23 or something like that for a year for it, it felt like a lot for an app subscription but I reminded myself I was paying more than that every 6 weeks when I did Slimming World.

I've had a pre-Christmas miracle this week. I've lost 0.7lb. 😁

@ShinyPikachu, how do you find the Nutracheck app? I’ve got my fitness pal but has a brief look at Nutracheck. Happy to pay as I really need to get in gear, eldest teen wants to go abroad next year and I cannot face a hot country being hugely overweight.

In the past I’ve done things like the Cambridge diet but can’t seem to stick to it (two kids with complex special needs and a full time job) so I figure being consistent is key. So I plan to track all I eat. I’m weighing in at 16.7 stone which is the biggest I’ve ever been.

ShinyPikachu · 19/12/2022 20:34

@Dirtylittlewolf - I really love it.

I used to use MFP but found it such a pain to add things and scrolling down the wheels if I had an odd weight like 127g was a nightmare. Maybe MFP has changed now but you just type the numbers in with NutraCheck. It's also more UK based so has a lot more of the products I use than MFP did and the barcode scanner is one of the handiest features for adding things quickly.

It does take a bit of finding your way around at first but the forums are meant to be good for help (I'm a stubborn git so just try to find stuff by myself usually. Grin)

One of the features I love on it is that you can select days of the week you're more likely to need more calories for and it adds some to that day and just takes a few off each of the other days. It's great if you have a takeaway or go out on a specific day each week. You could probably change it each week too but I've kept mine the same with extra calories for every Saturday.

I've also started to add recipes for homemade meals I make so as long as I stick to the same measurements it's much easier to add a portion of it (and if I do have different measurements it's easy to edit it).

If you're a member of the Two Chubby Cubs group on Facebook they have a discount for for the app I believe. I think it's a pinned post in the group. I got a deal without that though, NutraCheck themselves offered me a discount after I had been using it for free (you can only save something like 5 foods a day on the free one so not ideal for the long-term).

Morning everyone.
I have not been tracking very well but don't think I have gone too off the scale.
What's everyone's plans for eating over Christmas?

ShinyPikachu · 20/12/2022 08:59

We're going to be visiting family and staying with them for a few days so tbh my plans for eating are to have everything I see and enjoy myself. 😂 I don't tend to eat massive portions anyway, my Christmas dinner will be the same as whenever we have a roast. I'll have a small bit of meat and gravy and 3/4 of my plate will be veg. I don't really like potatoes so I might have one or two but I'd rather have a plate of buttered sprouts. 😁

Can I join? I’m planning to start calorie counting with nutracheck tomorrow. Last time I weighed myself was a week or so ago and about 19st7.

DuckWithOneWing · 26/12/2022 20:08

Hi @RedSnail welcome! I think a lot of us are taking it slow over Christmas, but I'm getting back on things soon and I'm sure others will be back next year! I can't wait to see what weightloss next year brings

My plan is to get back in to tracking food over the next few days, even if choices aren’t all ideal, ready for the new year.

ShinyPikachu · 27/12/2022 13:36

Hi @RedSnail and welcome. I'm going to be retracking my food before new year too. I've eaten so much over the last few days and I feel so bloated so I have a feeling I'll be starting from scratch so the sooner I start the better really.
