Getting Serious in September

Here is the new thread. Thanks for the title @theHoneyBadger.

Weighed in at 8st12.5 this morning, 0.25 down from the beginning of August. No specific aim for me other than to eat a bit more healthily cause I've had a wierd lurgy the last few days, not covid have tested several times. Love September cause it always feels like a new beginning.

Enjoy your party @sparklyglitterball. socialising is precious after all the restrictions we've had.

Everyone in our house has got a lurgy, DH is the roughest, not covid we've all done tests. Both DS have got it. I felt rough yesterday but feel better today. Think it will be a quiet weekend but ok with that. Had Dominos last night, so 8st12.25 this morning, but ok with that.

Morning everyone! Sorry to hear about all the lurgies - wishing everyone a speedy recovery.

@Octopus37 - Just on the hormones, can you maybe try to get a telephone appmt rather than deal with the faff of actually going? Please listen to your body - speak to someone if you don’t think things are quite right and are questioning the effectiveness of the HRT as I think it’s not always for everyone. Hope you get sorted. 💐

Tough-ish week at work this week but which I realise only now has meant I’ve apparently been too busy to snack (!). I did get to a yogalates class on Wednesday (never done that before - loved it and would recommend!) and did a fairly full-on 6am gym session on Thursday - so far I’m sticking to my commitment. I do hope I keep going but now that it’s the weekend I’m honestly a bit nervous that I might fall off the wagon. I plan to go to the gym again shortly and then swimming at 2pm. I’m probably using exercise as a bit of a distraction from the fridge (and my laptop). I can only hope I can sustain it but I’m not sure - so I really want to take advantage of this recent spurt of motivation as I don’t know how long it’s here for… Your best tips for resisting temptation gladly welcomed!

MoominFeatures · 25/09/2021 10:28

@sparklyglitterball Sorry, forgot to say - have a lovely time tonight!

TheHoneyBadger · 25/09/2021 14:21

I was up a bit this morning after being talked into take away by ds last night but still under 13st. Been to the gym and done a really good work out so fingers crossed. Bored of bouncing around the same weight for quite a while.

MoominFeatures · 25/09/2021 15:46

Well done on your workout @TheHoneyBadger! Better to have takeaway plus gym than takeaway and no gym, right????!

TheHoneyBadger · 25/09/2021 18:46

True dat.

All I've eaten so far today is a big bowl of nuts. I've also had a cup of black coffee, a large glass of red and have drunk nearly 2l of water already. Considering a choc ice.

I will make a big nutritious stew tomorrow to make up for crappy nutrition days. Will save a bowlful for Monday after work.

Octopus37 · 26/09/2021 10:06

Nuts are pretty nutritious @TheHoneyBadger. I'm guessing if you're going to just eat one thing all day, thats one of the better ones.

@MoominFeatures you're right, I will try and get a GP phone appointment this week.

Not enough steps and a bit too much food yesterday, 8st12.75 this morninng. Period has started properly though. Hope everyone has a good day.

OP posts:
TheHoneyBadger · 26/09/2021 12:24

Yay for period. Not that periods are great but definitely better than waiting for a period.

I didn't have the choc ice so it was just nuts but weight up slightly this morning (12:12.8). Stew plan is put back till tomorrow because ds is going to make pain au chocolate in a bit and I bought panani (sp) at the co op earlier and have bacon that needs using up so I will make open bacon and egg paninis with mushrooms later on. A two breakfast day.

The reality is that I'm not a particularly healthy eater and whilst I will have days where I eat a ton of veg because I want it it will never be in an orderly 5 a day fashion. Anything that is going to be sustainable has to work with that and the fact that I like a drink and like to be able to eat junk sometimes.

Hence it taking nearly a year and a half to lose about 2stone 10pounds I guess despite having managed to pile it on in the first place crazily quickly.

I'm just about keeping on going down however slowly or sometimes being stuck but at least not gaining these days.

Realistically even if I could only lose 2lbs a month (and forget december) I should be well under 12st by next summer. I'm genuinely surprised I'm ok with it happening that slowly but I've accepted that for me it is slow and that's the only chance of it actually being real and sustainable.

I may just be lazy.

MoominFeatures · 26/09/2021 12:38

@TheHoneyBadger You’re not lazy - you’re losing effectively, your MO is to do it without sacrificing life’s small pleasures AND because you’re doing it gradually it’s more likely to be, as you say, sustainable.

MoominFeatures · 26/09/2021 12:53

Feeling a bit “meh” today.

Was so busy that stupidly didn’t eat all day yesterday until dinner and then had an absolutely MASSIVE (not even exaggerating - I think it was about 500g-worth) steak last night and a large glass of red. Thankfully resisted chips and had a tomato salad instead. In theory it’s all fine (and I definitely enjoyed it) because I’d had a really good gym and swim day earlier on, but though I’m not hungover or anything I think the wine has maybe thwarted my motivation/capability today - I did make it to a yogalates class this morning and then had a good session with weights and cardio but I had wanted to finish with a gentle swim as well - sorry to say that I sacked the latter off and have just got home. I’m mildly annoyed with myself because weekends are when I can really exercise properly and in a focused way as I’m typically pretty time poor Mon-Fri. But maybe my targets are just a bit unrealistic - reading back what I’ve just typed about my intended session today possibly I do sound a bit bonkers.

Hey, this thread is helpful - I don’t want to make excuses but maybe I need to adjust my own expectations? I’m still relatively new to get-fit so maybe I haven’t quite worked out the right balance. @TheHoneyBadger has the right idea with sustainable - Of course I want that too but maybe my desire for results ASAP is getting in the way. Argh.

MoominFeatures · 26/09/2021 12:59

Sorry, I’m spamming now but, on the topic of results, I’m resisting the urge to weigh-in because (a) (frankly) volume of food consumed last evening and (b) I don’t want to start tracking my numbers daily, but I will be really interested to see what my number is next go and to see whether this week has been “worth it”. Will keep you posted…

TheHoneyBadger · 26/09/2021 13:09

Maybe a tad bonkers. A large steak without chips and glass of red wine doesn't sound excessive to me - let alone countered with 2 days in a row of pretty intense gym sessions.

MoominFeatures · 26/09/2021 14:18

Fair! Thank you - honestly appreciate the sanity/reality check.

LBB2020 · 26/09/2021 22:04

Hope everyone has had a good weekend Smile I haven’t eaten well but have walked lots! DH and I meal planned yesterday and the online shop arrived this morning so we’re ready to get back on the wagon and cheer each other on again! x

Octopus37 · 27/09/2021 07:42

@MoominFeatures that doesn't sound like a lot of food at all. Honestly, I really think that slowly and surely wins the race.

@TheHoneyBadger you are anything but lazy, you have done amazingly. Why should we sacrifice life's small pleasures with everything else there is to cope with? You have the right approach. Slow and steady wins the race.

Weighed 8st12.75 again this morning, wasn't well with my period yesterday, only managed 6,000 steps and a bit too much food. If I can weigh 8st10 by the end of the year (before xmas obviously), I will be delighted.

OP posts:
MoominFeatures · 27/09/2021 08:41

@LBB2020 Amazing work with the walking (and that you managed to rope DH into meal planning with you I have to admire)! Also, the new grocery delivery hopefully feels like a bit of a fresh start so no reason not to move on, look forward and have a great week - you’ve so got this!

TheHoneyBadger · 27/09/2021 08:49

Thanks Octopus - hope you're feeling better today.

12:11.8 today - new low.

LBB2020 · 27/09/2021 09:27

Thank you @MoominFeatures Smile
Well done @TheHoneyBadger that’s brilliant!
Hope you’re feeling a bit better today @Octopus37 I’m not looking forward to my period returning (I’m still breastfeeding and there’s no sign of it as yet)

LadyDanburysHat · 27/09/2021 10:10

Well done on the new low @TheHoneyBadger

I need to stop with the self sabotage, when I'm feeling hormonal. We ended up having KFC on Saturday night. A massive bucket that was too large for us as a family, so I ate way more than I needed to be satisfied.

No gym for a week with DS2 having Covid and my cold. Hoping to get back tomorrow night and that will help me get back on track.

I am 12st 0.5 again this morning. Keep going up and down around the 12st mark. I know it will drop again though, if I get back to it.

sparklyglitterball · 27/09/2021 21:00

Hey, just checking in. Weekend was full of tasty treats and bubbly, as expected! But had a lovely time, and even managed a slightly hungover run on Sunday. Hoping to get back on the wagon this week, and we finally have a quieter month in terms of socialising........so no excuses not to stay on track 🙄

sparklyglitterball · 27/09/2021 21:05

@MoominFeatures that really doesn't sound like much food to me either! @TheHoneyBadger well done. I really believe that losing slowly is the way to go. So much more sustainable long term, and means you're changing habits slowly over time which can be a lifestyle change rather than a 'diet'.

MoominFeatures · 27/09/2021 22:08

Wow - @sparklyglitterball a run on even a mild hangover is totally hardcore! Bloody good for you!!!

Thanks so much (again) for the reassurance on my steak-related (as it turns out, non-)issue - just really grateful for the sensible check/balance from you all!

Made the gym again tonight so feeling really positive and still committed. I really don’t like running much so did an uphill powerwalk for a little while but no weights or anything tonight as didn't have time. But that’s okay. Looking forward to a pilates class in the morning but, other than that, unless I can squeeze something in around my working week (which feels unlikely), that’ll be all my gym-related activity now until probably Friday. Got boozy (work) dinners in the diary for wed and thu nights after the day-shift each day, and tbh I’m not looking forward to those - as they’re work functions the food is unlikely to be amazing and, though I’m sure the company will be fine, it’s not like either will be a banterrific night out with some mates. But hey ho. Hope they don’t set me back too much AND they are unexpectedly fun with delicious food!

Octopus37 · 28/09/2021 07:22

Thanks @LBB2020 and @TheHoneyBadger think I do need to make that GP appointment, even though I'm so busy with work. DS1 is till lurgied and off school, negative lateral flows, but he wants to get a PCR test. I'm aware that I'm not walking quite enough at the moment, time and energy, will try and do a bit better food wise today. 8st12.5 this morning.

LBB2020 · 28/09/2021 09:04

Well done on the run @sparklyglitterball and for getting to the gym @MoominFeatures!
Keep going @LadyDanburysHat, slow and steady wins the race or that’s what I’m telling myself!
You’re doing amazing @Octopus37 it’s so hard juggling everything! Kids, work, diet, exercise etc!
I had a good day yesterday, did 12,000 steps and didn’t go crazy with food! Meeting a friend this morning for a coffee and will probably have a cake but will get out this afternoon for a walk, it’s all about balance Grin Hope you all have a good day x

TheHoneyBadger · 28/09/2021 09:08

12:11.6 here despite fish and chips last night. Ds is lurgied too and off school and I'd had a long day dealing with safeguarding issue that came up at the end of my teaching day and was too worn out to think of cooking.

Going to the gym later this morning.
