Lose 7lbs in August

Following on from the July thread for those who wish to carry on and for new joiners alike.

Ive been inspired by the ladies who posted on the July thread. There have been some awesome losses.

Not quite the end of the month and I’ve achieved my July goal of getting below the elusive 140lbs. As of this morning I was 139.6lbs, bmi 27.3. Down from 145.9lbs, bmi 28.5.

I’m doing a lower carb Mediterranean diet. Plenty of veg, some berries, salad, olive oil, butter, cream, fish, chicken and some red meat. Occasionally I will have whole grain rice and gluten free pasta (good for my micro biome). I rarely drink alcohol. Chocolate can be my downfall Grin. I naturally only want to eat twice a day. I’ve read that intermittent fasting can be beneficial in the battle of the bulge as well as keeping blood sugars in check.

How do you intend to lose?

Any tips you’d like to share?

My tips are drink plenty of water and be mindful of portion sizes.

I think it's probably 80% diet and 20% exercise. I just do yoga and general walking and cleaning, but the yoga is aimed at toning and flexibility rather than weight loss.

Try not to fuss too much @sunshinecake

Tomorrow is indeed a new day, ladies and a new week - the last week of August!

Northie · 25/08/2019 19:54

Since Thursday I've been out visiting family and generally enjoying the bank holiday weekend. Have made plenty of bad choices food wise but funnily I don't feel bad about it. A few months back I would have hated myself for going off track and ended up throwing the whole diet away and stress eating. Instead I have defrosted the freezer in preparation for the healthy and yummy food shop due tomorrow. I have made a real effort to try to get out of my bad habits and negative thinking and as hard as it is - it is definitely paying off! I have lost count of the amount of times I have had to stop and reassure myself that it is more than okay to eat and have fun, I haven't ruined any diet and there is always tomorrow to start afresh.

I'm looking forward to being back on my shakes tomorrow and I've promised not to weigh until at least the end of the week.

cheesenpickles · 26/08/2019 06:14

I dread to weigh this morning. I'm only just getting home now. Granddad had had the kids for the night and we had a major throwback to pre-kids days. Dh is passed out on the sofa and I'm going to head to bed now (eek! It's gone 6 Blush) BUT I had a bucket list moment (New Order playing Love will tear us apart) so totally worth it. And I became a great aunt this weekend. So, all in all, a lb here or there not much in the grand scheme of things. Back on it on come Thursday.

dancingmom · 26/08/2019 07:12

Morning all

Wow what a scorcher of a weekend. Have pretty much stuck to plan amazing - except for two sausages and a burger in one sitting no bun!!!! Had three diet cokes and a sugar free jelly too. The heat made me retain s few pounds on Saturday night but it's gone now.

Yesterday bulletproof coffee, spinach and mozzarella omelette, chicken and guacamole with feta, no dinner and squares of v dark choc.

@SunshineCake read the obesity code. The whole medical establishment move more eat less is totally disproven. Obesity is a modern phenomenon since 70s when doctors starting telling people that. It doesn't work - well it does for a bit but your body will move you back to your set point hence why you always put it back on. The way to lose weight effectively and permanently is to tackle your hormones. The food we eat / are addicted to gives us insulin resistance hence why even reducing calorific intake and exercising doesn't necessarily work if you are eating enough carbs to keep insulin high. Etc etc. I read it with jaw on floor. I definitely have had insulin resistance for years - terrible cravings, addicted to sugar, Diet Coke. And yet i ate quite healthily and never would my weight shift!
Hence why am doing keto and IF. Read the book I can't recommend it more highly for info.

crummyusername · 26/08/2019 07:52

@SunshineCake I think it's pretty hard through exercise alone. I did find I lost weight when I was running regularly though I was eating well too, the two went together. I think if I hadn't changed the diet, the weight loss might have been marginal and only when I was training intensively (half marathon).

I'm doing less running at the moment as I've been injured so instead have been doing cardio at the gym.

A little tip I found in case anyone is interested... BitGym is an IPad app you can use on exercise bikes etc (so long as you have somewhere to balance it!). It detects your motion and shows you moving through a landscape and has trainers tell you when to speed up / slow down - kind of like a spin class. I get bored out of my mind usually on a bike after ten minutes but with the app I have done up to 50 minutes. It does cost but it's working well for me whilst I am in the gym more than usual.

crummyusername · 26/08/2019 07:53

As for me - I've been off the thread for a while as I've been away with the kids visiting family for the week. I've not totally gone crazy with food but a lot less careful as I've been eating what everyone else was eating, so I've had chips, desserts etc....

And this morning I was back to 3lb down from my starting weight (from 1lb down a week ago).

No idea what's going on there!

SunshineCake · 26/08/2019 13:22

Thank you dancingmom.. I'm really struggling with reading and retaining information at the moment so would you be able to give me a link for a way I could manage to understand please?

dancingmom · 26/08/2019 15:16

@SunshineCake if you scroll down the bottom of this page there's a video from Dr Fung who wrote the obesity code explaining. Diet doctor has plenty of good advice. You don't have to do strict keto. You could try low carb and 5:2 or 16:8 or Fast 800. But it is about cutting carbs and sugars dramatically, upping fat and putting fasting into your regime to beat insulin resistance. X

dancingmom · 26/08/2019 15:17

And link!

Adollop · 26/08/2019 16:15

I weighed myself this morning for the first time, 12 stone 10.5lbs, which is about what i expected. I've logged this on mfp, surprisingly found that i was only 4 lbs more 4 years ago Shock

I've found it helpful logging what i eat on mfp, managed to stick to my allotted calories over the weekend. I'm away from tomorrow for a few days, so may not do as well, but will try my best.

Does anyone have a link to a beginner's yoga video or app? I used to do yoga, but it's been a while, so don't remember much and am definitely not as flexible anymore.

SunshineCake · 26/08/2019 17:26

Thank you very much dancingmom.I've just done some cycling so even if the exercise doesn't automatically equal weight loss I'm sure it will make me fitter and therefore healthier?

doadeer · 26/08/2019 17:51

@Adollop for yoga can you go to a class? I think it's easy to injure yourself and have poor alignment at home. Plus it's unlikely we all work as hard without a structured class. Might just be me, I've practiced for a few years but I never manage the same quality of workout at home as in a class 🥴

BustedDreams · 26/08/2019 17:54

Hello you lovely lot 😊. Sorry, I’ve been missing in action. Busy family weekend and now trying to get our home back in order.

Whilst doing chores I’ve been listening to Deepak Chopra's audio book, ‘What are you hungry for’. Only just started listening and looking forward to listening to the rest of it. He starts by stating diets don’t work & healthy eating starts in the mind (I totally agree). He talks about eating with ‘transformative awareness’. I totally get this and it’s a cornerstone of changing habits. I will do a summary of the salient points and share (once I’ve finished listening) for those of you who might be interested.

Gentle reminder that there are 6 full days of August left. So if we’re wanting to see change prior to September we need to make mindful healthy food choices. We can do it!

Hope you’ve had a great Bank Holiday, whatever you’ve been up to.

Well, I was hungry for an apology from DH Hmm We rarely argued, but did just before tea. Which meant I couldn't face it wasn't going to eat what he made and then just scoffed 2 slices of PB toast Blush Blush and a donut!

Thank f*ck it's about the 3rd argument in a decade. I'm very upset. Line drawn and new day tomorrow hey?

We can all make a difference in 6 days!

SunshineCake · 26/08/2019 22:06

Hope you feel better MrsJones. I know that unsettled feeling when one rows with your dh as we don't argue much so I personally take it to heart so much more than if it was a usual thing for us to do. I probably over react.

Adollop · 26/08/2019 22:28

Doadeer I'd like to go to a class but I'd have to sign up for an 8 week course, I'm moving house soon, so can't commit to that at the moment. Once I've moved I will though. I just thought I could do some gentle yoga at home in the meantime.

I'm struggling this evening. I went out this afternoon and had an egg sandwich, which I don't usually have lunch so that pushed my calories up for today. Now I'm really hungry and I've no calorie allowance left Confused

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 26/08/2019 23:24

Hello all.

Quick update to say I lost 8lbs in August, taking me to 1stone 0.5lbs for July and August. It's slower than I would have liked but at times I'm practically immobile.

I'm changing my approach slightly and won't weigh in now until September 7th, for various reasons, but I will be on plan and on the threads.

🥂

Foreverlexicon · 27/08/2019 05:59

I’ve had a rather heavy weekend on the food and the booze. No regrets - I usually work shifts apart from this summer so a hot bank holiday weekend that I was off for deserves celebrating! Plus it was date 2, 3 and 4 😳 back to business as usual now though.

I’m hoping the low weekdays will offset the heavier weekends but if weigh in on Saturday proves me wrong then I will have to start showing some more self control.

MrsJonesAndMe · 27/08/2019 06:19

Thanks @sunshinecake. We haven't spoken at all Hmm

Well done frogs That is an amazing achievement.

Sounds like you deserved it lexicon

BustedDreams · 27/08/2019 06:45

Good Morning Lovelies 😊

@WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa fanbloodytastic & well done! That’s great!

@MrsJonesAndMe Hope you’re feeling better in yourself this morning. Sleep can do wonders and most situations lose their heat overnight.

@Foreverlexicon me too! Tried to eat to plan but when your getting drinks handed to you and someone else is plating up your food it’s not always easy to stay on track.

Buttered veg for lunch and roast chicken & salad later.

Anyone up for a September thread? Lose 7lb in September or Lose 4lb in September? Or even Lose in September. What do people think? Post your thoughts.

SunshineCake · 27/08/2019 07:15

It's a new day MrsJones and I hope it goes better. Flowers

If I just count my weight on 31st July and my weight today then I've lost 2.8lbs so far in August. My weight today is 1.2lbs more than my lowest which I was on 23rd August. Interestingly enough today's weight is my fourth lowest but also my fourth highest so I'll take that as bang in the middle and still a loss.

I'm having dry September which won't be hard as I barely drink but is calories I can't afford but I am going to try and just have crisps on two evenings a week as it can be as much as five nights a week I have some. That will be harder.

cheesenpickles · 27/08/2019 07:17

Up 0.4lb which considering I've drunk enough this weekend to stun a baby elephant, is a bit of a victory. Last day off plan today (work thing involving food) and then back on it tomorrow.

MrsJonesAndMe · 27/08/2019 09:18

Thanks @BustedDreams He's gone to work without either of us really speaking so that's not a great start. Hot already and a long day of child wrangling ahead.

On the up side I'm touching 12lbs and about half a kilo off where I was before the thyroid went into nose dive.

I'm up for whatever challenge people want. Maybe leaving open so each person can set their own goal is best?

DrDiva · 27/08/2019 09:43

@MrsJonesAndMe sorry to hear about your argument. We don’t argue much either so it’s a bugger deal than it probably should be when it does happen. And solidarity on the child wrangling - I am now officially counting down days to the start of school!
@SunshineCake hope you are feeling better. You’re in my thoughts a lot, as it sounds like there are similarities between our upbringings (food wise at least). So solidarity to you too! We can do this. (Life in general, I think I mean, not just the food issue Smile )
@Foreverlexicon and @cheesenpickles sounds like you had fabulous bank holiday weekends! Grin hooray for the weather goddess forgetting to make it rain on a long weekend for once.

doadeer · 27/08/2019 11:00

It's so so boiling in my flat it's horrendous. It's 30 degrees now according to baby lamp 🙄 I'm breastfeeding loads which is making me starving!!

Well done everyone! You've been the most wonderful supportive group. Bring on September! Agree maybe we can set our goals as everyone is in a different place x
