Hi Ladies, I'm new here on the board but have been reading for a while now..

To make a long story short I'm going through a really hard time right now, dealing with separation.. 7-yr relationship and a 4-yr daughter. We moved to London last year from abroad so my social network isn't very large, to say the least. (n.b: I do love London though and planning to stay.) This is just a bit of background info to help you understand.

The reason I'm actually on the board is because I'm starting a diet. I'm unhappy with my looks and none of my clothes fit me, and my budget definitely doesn't allow for a wardrobe overhaul. So I'll use this thread as a diet diary and hope to get some encouragement and perhaps advice from you.

I've chosen the Dukan diet mydukandiet.com/dieting/. I'm at 69kg now and would like to get to 59kg, which is my pre-pregnancy weight (sorry can't get my head around stones and pounds yet). I actually dropped close to 60 kg when breastfeeding but have gained way too much weight since.

This is the plan:
5-day Attack phase starting tomorrow. (I've actually started 'light' today, just to prepare my body for it, so not eating pasta and breads and sugars today)
Cruise phase - the online Dukan calculator says that by the 9th of November I should get to 59kg, so I should lost 10kg in just a but over 2 months.
Consolidation - that's supposed to last 100days or so, after Cruise.

Thanks for having the patience to read so far. Hoping to hear from you along the way and if anyone wants to join in and diet, I'd be thrilled :)

That's exactly how I felt .. Although some see dukan as bad and dangerous , carbs really do make me feel
I'll. I have tonnes of energy now , I don't feel bloated or lethargic . Dukan was my last hope and I was getting worried I would be stuck a size 14 forever Sad. I'm 5 ft tall so it wasn't a good look.. Try not to feel disappointment when the scales plateau or even go up, this has happened to me numerous times ( I know its hard not to!!) .. Stay with it Smile

nuks · 11/09/2012 20:08

@bishboschone that's great, and you are right about the energy, I feel less tired too. Not sure if this will continue but my plan is to end the Cruise phase if it doesn't feel alright. It's a 2-month period so I couldn't even do it if I felt unwell.

My energy levels have gone up and up as I have got slimmer .. I should be on consolidation now but I haven't quite got to my true weight . I actually don't want to go back to carbs ..

nuks · 11/09/2012 20:59

@bishboschone I thought the Cruise phase was supposed to last until you reached your true weight (or desired weight if you don't want to get as low as true weight?). So the duration is not really set, but perhaps I'm wrong.

this is interesting i though you'd miss carbs after so much time.

OP posts:
bishboschone · 11/09/2012 21:12

I should have reached my true weight by sunday but I'm still 3 pounds away . I could have gone onto consolidation but I wanted to get another half a stone off so I have some leeway when I start eating carbs again. I don't miss carbs at all really . I supposed I'm a bit concerned I may get a taste for them again but on the whole I don't feel bothered .

solittletimeandsomuchtodo · 11/09/2012 21:13

Day two Grin
All fairly good -lunch I had limited access to protein. So it was ham and salad. No cards, but not really pure protein. It wasn't the place for me to just have a few slices of ham.
All good otherwise, ran out of time to make galettes but will do this tomorrow.
Glad to hear all your progress.

bishboschone · 11/09/2012 21:14

Actually that's not true , I miss biscuits and could happily live on biscuits ( not cake or chocolate , just biscuits ) ... I'm going to stop talking about biscuits now ! Blush

mousemole · 11/09/2012 22:41

Can I join in too ? I've been on attack 5 days and lost 4lbs. I'm 5ft 9 and 12.7 stone. I want to get to 10.5. I have thyroid issues too so really hope Dukan works.

bishboschone · 12/09/2012 07:13

Anyone can join mouse Smile

nuks · 12/09/2012 17:03

@mousemole: welcome!

I'm wondering how/if this diet affects the thyroid... I have this too.

mousemole · 12/09/2012 19:00

Thanks guys ! I downloaded the iPhone app which is quite good but not amazing.
I've really felt today that my sugar cravings are passing and that I'm feeling less hungry in general. I'm planning on doing attack for 2 weeks but today I had a friend for lunch and had a bit of salad with my salmon Sad !
I'm not sure how it will affect the thyroid. Sadly mine was nuked with RAI about 7 years ago so on thyroxine permanently.
We shall see ! I do know that carbs bloat me instantly !
Good luck everyone Grin

SandWitch · 12/09/2012 19:40

mousemole - 2 weeks is a very long time to do attack. Perhaps have a think about doing a shorter time, and then do the 5/5 method?

Not that I am an expert, but 14 days pure protein will pay havoc with your digestive system.

mousemole · 12/09/2012 20:26

Thanks Sandwitch, will have a think. I need to get back to the book to read up on 5/5.
I've just ordered some ketone test sticks from eBay !

solittletimeandsomuchtodo · 13/09/2012 07:24

Hope everyone is doing well?
I need scales, just moved house and don't have any.
Otherwise been pretty good.
Have a cold today so feeling Sad might have a day in bed drinking tea(after school run!)
K

nuks · 13/09/2012 10:08

@mousemole I believe the book says not to exceed 10 days of attack unless you clear it with your GP.

@solittletimeandsomuchtodo sorry to hear you're unwell, hope you get better soon.

I'm doing fine, weight loss has surely slowed down but still losing. I cheated yesterday on a PP day, ate an apple. I might add fruit to the PV days, but will probably limit the quantity to one a day. Not missing breads and pastas and not even cheese, so it's all good. I am having tons of cottage cheese and fromage frais, perhaps that is why.

OP posts:
mousemole · 13/09/2012 11:47

Thanks nuks I will stop at 10 days. Feeling thinner today.. Yay !

nuks · 14/09/2012 11:11

Entering week 2 of Cruise today, 64.2kg. It's been fluctuating all week from 64.9 to 64.3 then back up to 65 then down to 64.5 and so on. I go on the scale first thing in the morning, when the numbers are lower, but I'm consistent.

All in all I lost 4 kilos in two weeks, yay! Energy levels are good, skin looks great (probably from all that water, I must be drinking more than 2l a day if I count coffees and teas). I also found a remedy for constipation, I drink fennel tea in the evenings.

Cheat count:

  • an apple
  • two (!) glasses of wine that got me drunk right away. I think the alcohol went directly to my bloodstream with no fat and carbs to absorb it.

Thanks a lot Monsieur Dukan, that book was worth it so I don't regret paying full price on it on amazon :)

How's everyone doing?

SandWitch · 14/09/2012 11:33

Hi nuks

I am 12st 10lbs and 10 days in, so that makes a 10lb loss in 10 days. Not bad, but would have liked to have lost a bit more this week.
I stuck at 12.12 for three days, then dropped 2lbs yesterday, but still at 12.10 this morning.

I too am drinking more water now than I have ever done Grin I have 1 ltr bottle of water on my desk at work and try to finish one before lunch and one in the afternoon. Add tea, coffee and diet coke into the mix - makes for frequent trips to the loo!

I am still really determined though, which is unusual for me as I have tend to lose interest in diets when the loss slows down.

Keep going Smile

nuks · 14/09/2012 11:54

@sandwitch: I think that's great, 1lb a day. As long as we are gradually losing we are on the right path, no? I hear you about determination!

I kept doing research on low carb/low sugar/low calorie fruit and I came up with a small list - these below meet the criteria.

berries
cherries
grapefruit
apples
appricots
peaches

I want to make it easier for me to stay in cruise the rest of September and October. I don't miss pasta/bread/rice/potatoes but I do miss fruit and sugars and I hate aspartam sweeneter.

So I decided to allow myself to 'cheat' with fruit from this list in the cruise phase. Not making it an everyday habit but I'll just do it if I feel like having something sweet. Not more than 1 piece of fruit a day, and in the case of berries I just add them to youghurt or fromage frais. (i always buy the plain yoghurt and make my own mix).

Hopefully it's not a tremendously bad idea, will stop doing it if the weight loss stops.

SandWitch · 14/09/2012 12:37

Thanks nuks.
I am just very impatient - I want it all gone now! Grin

I was wondering about cheats that are allowed on a strict atkins diet. So, perhaps a little grated cheese in an omlette? I am missing fruit though. I don't want to stray too far from the diet too quickley iyswim. I think if I make loads of changes now, it doesn't leave me with much room to manoeuvre in six weeks time when I really need it.

I know that there is no ideal answer, but I am finding this diet easier to follow, perhaps just becuase it is so strict.
I was at a conference yesterday and was not even a little tempted by the biscuits, danish, sandwiches etc.

That is a first for me!

bishboschone · 14/09/2012 13:28

Sandwitch .. Stick with it and it will be gone before you know it . In terms of cheating , I honestly haven't but I have used activia yogurts and Pepsi max to satisfy sweet cravings . I have bought some Atkins chocolate but it is sat looking at me because I'm scared to eat it . I'm just not sure if it will mess everything up.

mousemole · 14/09/2012 15:18

Well done everyone, some great results. I am pre menstrual and cheated today with 2 biscuits. Someone tell me off please ! On to cruise tomorrow until Christmas Sad

bishboschone · 14/09/2012 16:12

Noooooooo!!! Biscuits ..

solittletimeandsomuchtodo · 14/09/2012 19:56

Another Angry to the biscuits.....

Smile
nuks · 14/09/2012 20:29

@mousemole please please make it the last one 'til Christmas. Eat something else like a vanilla 0% fat yogurt or something like that.. if you have to cheat. I'll try the activia yogurts that bishboschone mentioned, never had one before.

Talked to a colleague at work who did Dukan last year and lost over 25 kilos. He discouraged me to eat fruit during cruise... one cheat comes after another and before you know it it's all lost (or should I say gained back?).
