Continuing Mounjaro...part 13

ObsidianTree · 14/06/2024 11:31

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

@GreyFinch

I started at bmi 42 also - I was 311lb as I've got that extra height.
I hope I can do as well as you have in a couple more months.
What dose are you on now?

I’ve just took my bonus 5mg on Wednesday, 7.5mg in the fridge ready for next week. I’ve found it to be working as it should be, minimal side effects and next to no hunger, having to force myself to eat and drink at set times. I’ve been quite lucky! I’ve just ordered a walking pad due for delivery today as I’m wanting to introduce some fitness. I want to be one of those annoying fit and healthy people that love exercise 😂

GreyFinch · 21/06/2024 09:12

I know what you mean @ObsidianTree, I genuinely have no idea what those weights would look like on adult me! I will have to wait and see when I get there, 10 stone seems like a lifetime away for me

Gazelda · 21/06/2024 09:13

@runningmom I'm a newbie too. Took first dose at 11 last night. I'm so nervous about side effects, but WFH today so thought it would be the best timing.

I'm excited, and also scared. I'm soooo overweight, and have tried so many diets. But my willpower is poor and I comfort eat.

I've told DH what I'm doing and he says he supportive. In fact, he bought me flowers yesterday "to cheer me up". I don't think he's ever done that before.

I loathe exercise, but will try to walk more and swim when I get the time.

CiderJabs · 21/06/2024 09:16

@MoreThanJustANumber assume you have the Renpho scales? A lot of these in my option are estimates but they do give you a healthy range to aim for so you can use it as a guide. It depends a lot on your height and age so nobody can give you an ideal figure.

I have the same and the things I focus on are weight / bmi - body fat and metabolic age.

KeepingUndercover · 21/06/2024 09:19

I'm quite tempted to get some Renpho scales that offer a bit more. I just have basic digital scales. I'd quite like some estimates of muscle mass and things. What kind does everyone have?

CiderJabs · 21/06/2024 09:21

@KeepingUndercover these ones. They are on sale for 20 quid as well. They are amazing.

Morning all, anyone else had problems with Pharmacy2u? Ordered on Tuesday morning doctor approved quite quickly by 9.15am but it hasn’t even been dispatched yet ! Just sat there! Meant to take tomorrow, really did think I had plenty of time and my first order was dispatched the next day.

SylviaStrong · 21/06/2024 09:23

@KeepingUndercover I have those Renpho scales and they are really good. It great to see the changes over time that are not just weight.

BellaCriesAndThatsAlright · 21/06/2024 09:24

@LoulabellePeach I got my first from them and they were pretty quick. I did get an email from them a few days ago saying they were doing some sort of upgrade and you wouldn't be able to order for a few days from today. This might explain the delay.

MoreThanJustANumber · 21/06/2024 09:25

Thanks. Not Renpho but similar. There's zero information in the manual about the other measurements. I mainly got them because they were rechargeable, didn't realise they showed so many things other than weight. I'm really looking for something to keep me positive when I don't lose actual weight! 😀

KrankyKumquat · 21/06/2024 09:25

MoreThanJustANumber · 21/06/2024 08:41

Morning All!

I have some scales that seem to do so much, as well as weight and BMI they measure lots of things I don't understand. I wonder if someone can please advise?

I'm losing weight VERY slowly, but since the scales also show me things like percentage of muscle and lean body mass it's reassuring to see those go up.

What I don't really understand is things like protein and bone? What's the difference between muscle and skeletal muscle? what is a recommended percentage for body water?

What would be considered 'good scores' for any of these elements?

Body Fat %
Body Water %
Skeletal Muscle %
Bone %
Protein %
Muscle %
Visceral Fat Index
Subcutaneous Fat (lbs)
Lean Body Mass (lbs)

I am now on week 16, 10mg, progress is slow (24.5lb loss) but I almost think I'd continue taking MJ for the lack of food noise alone.

Thanks to all on this thread, I am so grateful. Don't think I could do this without you!

Judging by your attached picture, I'm guessing you've got Renpho scales? I've had mine a month, they're great but not sure how accurate all the extras are. Anyway, play about with the app as you'll find a section which gives you a guide on healthy ranges for all of the different measurements. I found this quite helpful as I didn't have a clue what I should be aiming for.

ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 09:32

BellaCriesAndThatsAlright · 21/06/2024 09:06

I'm the same height and have the same goal. I can't imagine how amazing it would feel to reach 10 stone 7. I'll be delighted to be under 12 but I do wonder if my lowest target is actually achievable now. Exciting!

It's such a weird exciting prospect! Actually dreaming of something that could happen! Wanting to be slim has been a dream of mine since being young. Looking forward to getting there! Just a shame I am 42 now and not in my 20s!

My pen arrives today. Not if I should hold off taking it until Monday as I've two paid for events over the weekend that I don't want to miss due to any side effects.... what to do...arrgh

I’m also 42! Yeah it’s sad to think I’ve been trying to be slimmer for about 20 years.

Thank you. They're not Renpho but I do have the Renpho app for the tape measure so I'll see if I can get info from there.

@NextPrimeMinister I'm really intrigued as to why you used the bonus dose on top of a dose? You could have had an extra week for free!

Just a reminder for anyone using that dose. It's usually a full dose left, if not a little more. Be careful with it!

It was a mistake! I thought it was just the bonus does and didn't think til afterwards that it was a very full needle!

Notsuchafattynow · 21/06/2024 09:42

KeepingUndercover · 21/06/2024 09:08

It's 7.5 + 8.75, not 8.75 total if you did the last dose and then the bonus dose on top. Double dose and a bit extra.

Oh shit.

I think we might all have got confused here. I read it as you injected the last dose and then took out the bonus dose which was the 8.75. Is it just the 8.75 you took out? So this was the fifth dose from the pen? Not fourth and fifth together?

Ok, so you extracted the bonus dose and used that? And didn't use a full dose before taking the bonus dose?

If you just took the bonus dose, that is about 8.75mg I think.

I skipped my jab on Sunday as I'd had a bad reaction to the previous weeks one ( I posted previously about it) feeling much better now but my goodness the food noise has returned. I can't stop thinking about food. Haven't had that for 11 weeks when taking the jab until this week. Almost forgotten what it was like to be obsessed with food and what my next meal was going to be. My mouth actually starts watering if I smell anything delicious. Food noise is definitely a thing.

NextPrimeMinister · 21/06/2024 10:05

@ObsidianTree

Yes its me, I use another name if I go on one of those WL bashing threads!!!

I'm not entirely sure what I've done. But it looked like 70 in total I injected. I didn't do a pen dose first.
