Continuing Mounjaro...part 13

ObsidianTree · 14/06/2024 11:31

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

Morning: first ever dose took this morning. Needle hard to get out of the lid once withdrawn so panicked a bit but managed it. Worried now that needle didn’t extend fully and therefore go in deep enough.

Having gone from 10 stone to nearly 14 in the space of 3-4 years (peri menopause and separation) and being properly fit (played rugby at a good level(“), I’ve not managed to sustain a diet for more than a week or two and have lost the first stone and put it on about three times. I’m done with it. I don’t recognise myself in the mirror and have turned quite reclusive as I am embarrassed of my gain. Today is the start of getting my eating under control and finding myself again post separation x

ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 07:08

@runningmom the needle doesn't extend. You should see the needle when you take the lid off. Sometimes there are two lids. Did you see the needle go into your skin?

Good luck with your journey 😊

I’m under 200lbs and out of the obese range! Mounjaro is amazing, I can’t believe it.

199.8lbs
29.9 BMI

GlueNoGlue · 21/06/2024 07:25

Weigh day, only lost 1lb which isn’t great, I’m now exactly 17 stone so I was hoping to lose at least two so I’d be 16 something. Oh well! 44lb down, so I’m half way to where I want to be!

GreyFinch · 21/06/2024 07:29

2 stone loss this morning! 🥹🎉

started 08/04/24 - 276.8lbs - BMI 42.1
current 21/06/24 - 248.8lbs - BMI 37.8

First major goal is to get to 210lbs by my birthday in December so 38.8lbs to go!

I’m struggling with an ultimate weight goal as I genuinely have always been bigger over the last 10 years and haven’t ever weighed myself to know what my ideal would be. My mam got to 210lbs (15st) a couple of years ago and she looked fab so chose that for my first goal!

For my height I think ideal is somewhere around the 9st but at 14 I was 10 stone so I don’t think I can go off BMI as 9st seems extremely thin

I think I’ll see how I look/feel as I go and change my target. MJ has been life changing for me 🥹

NextPrimeMinister · 21/06/2024 07:31

Week 17 for me, and 1lb off.

I think I've made a mistake this morning, used my bonus dose but infact have used it plus the last dose. 😐

God knows how much I've actually had.

I only have a 7.5 pen left and need to order next week.

37lbs off overall, (2 stone 9lbs).

SW 13.12
CW 11.03

I have a work conference next week, so not seen anyone since I started so hopefully someone will notice.

Are you quite tall? I am tall and I was 10 stone age 12. By age 13 I was 13 stone and 6ft tall. I'm aiming for 15 stone and may then tweak it down to 14 as that's where I looked my best last time I lost a good amount of weight. Good luck. We can do it!

ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 07:34

Great work @BellaCriesAndThatsAlright MJ is a miracle for sure 😊

@GlueNoGlue 44lbs so far is amazing! It might be 1lb this week, but next week could be 3lbs

@GreyFinch amazing progress. You've made such a big dent in a few months dropping near 5 points on your BMI!

@NextPrimeMinister great steady progress 😊
What was the pen you used? Hope it's not too much!

OP posts:
GreyFinch · 21/06/2024 07:37

@Lastchancefatty im 5ft8 and a little bit so not extremely tall but I’ve always weighed heavier since a teen. I think that started my weight issues if I’m honest as we used to have scales in our school gym and I was always the heavier one with everyone else being 7/8stone even though I was stick thin and had nothing on me I thought I was fat!

15 stone was also a good starting target for me especially since I was starting at 19 stone 10! I’ll do the same as you and just keep altering my target until I feel good!

Good luck to you also! 💞

NextPrimeMinister · 21/06/2024 07:38

@ObsidianTree it was a 7.5, and was about 70 (?) In the needle?

I need to order my next pen from med express and my last order was 19th. Can I order next Weds / Thursday. I think that's 5 weeks, but know they are strict.

So you used a dose of 7.5mg plus the bonus dose which sounds like about 8.75mg? 😱 Hope you're ok!

@GreyFinch I am also 5 foot 8. I think 11st 10lb would be BMI 25. I am going to go for low 11s. Possibly 10st 7lbs as it would be amazing to try that weight as an adult! Lol For the first time, I think it might be achievable with MJ!

I have another mini goal. My husband currently weighs 13st 6lbs, I currently weigh 13st 9lbs... I need to get my weight lower than his for the first time in our 12 year relationship! Shouldn't take me too long 😁

I have the same goal to be less than my husband.

He's currently 176.5 and I'm 185.2

Thanks for working that out. It's not too bad as I wanted to titrate up as losses on 7.5 have been very low, 2 pounds in 3 weeks.

KeepingUndercover · 21/06/2024 08:13

@NextPrimeMinister I'm really intrigued as to why you used the bonus dose on top of a dose? You could have had an extra week for free!

Just a reminder for anyone using that dose. It's usually a full dose left, if not a little more. Be careful with it!

MoreThanJustANumber · 21/06/2024 08:41

Morning All!

I have some scales that seem to do so much, as well as weight and BMI they measure lots of things I don't understand. I wonder if someone can please advise?

I'm losing weight VERY slowly, but since the scales also show me things like percentage of muscle and lean body mass it's reassuring to see those go up.

What I don't really understand is things like protein and bone? What's the difference between muscle and skeletal muscle? what is a recommended percentage for body water?

What would be considered 'good scores' for any of these elements?

Body Fat %
Body Water %
Skeletal Muscle %
Bone %
Protein %
Muscle %
Visceral Fat Index
Subcutaneous Fat (lbs)
Lean Body Mass (lbs)

I am now on week 16, 10mg, progress is slow (24.5lb loss) but I almost think I'd continue taking MJ for the lack of food noise alone.

Thanks to all on this thread, I am so grateful. Don't think I could do this without you!

Continuing Mounjaro...part 13
Lastchancefatty · 21/06/2024 08:41

@GreyFinch

I started at bmi 42 also - I was 311lb as I've got that extra height.
I hope I can do as well as you have in a couple more months.
What dose are you on now?

Priority1234 · 21/06/2024 08:43

Week 14 weigh in!

SW: 229lbs
CW: 178lbs

Hit the 50lbs off mark and my BMI is now out the obese category!

Starting 10mg on my next dose. Hoping it's not too rough of a transition.

It's 7.5 + 8.75, not 8.75 total if you did the last dose and then the bonus dose on top. Double dose and a bit extra.
