Husband dislikes my mother of the bride dress choices, am I wrong?

Husband hates the dresses I loved - mob btw! He says the colour is wrong, the shape doesn’t suit. I felt fantastic in them ☹️. Ditching dh isn’t an option. Are they awful or is he being unreasonable?

Yes navy not black and the gloves are to protect the dresses 😂. Dh said he hated the gloves 😂

thank you - looks like we’re back to drawing board 😳

spring wedding, city centre (London)

When I was MOB I went to John Lewis and booked a personal shopper. She brought items to me that I wouldn’t have looked at in a hundred years and some of them looked fabulous on. I bought a lovely dress and jacket. And a tip a friend gave me was to go to one of the make up counters,I went to Estée Lauder, and have your make up done, so that you really feel the part. Didn't buy the make up there and then, but went back later and bought some of the bits and was given loads of samples. Lovely day out and whole wedding outfit sorted. Good luck

This is beautiful and would suit your colouring

It screams posh funeral to me. Sorry! 😬

CroissantsByTheSeine · Yesterday 19:58

Ah I hate things like this but in your shoes I would want honest opinions.

I think both look terrible I’m so sorry, they don’t fit you properly and the colour is just too dark. I do tend to like navy though so maybe the lighting isn’t helping.

I feel you could do so much better. And with it being a spring wedding I would opt for something a bit brighter.

whippersnapper55 · Yesterday 19:59

The colour is harsh on you, maybe a softer colour? I agree the fit on the second dress isn't great either. The first dress is elegant but the dark colour doesn't suit you.

Another vote for no. A great big no in fact. Start again and unless you are royalty in disguise (who knows who is on Mumsnet) please do not add pearls.

I’m so sorry but they are really not nice or flattering. The dresses are ugly And the shoes and gloves aren’t my cup of tea either. Have you thought about a trouser suit? They can look incredible 😊

TutTutTutSigh · Yesterday 20:05

I think you could find something nicer that fits you perfectly with your budget, good luck!

TutTutTutSigh · Yesterday 20:05

Keep the gloves though 😉

Omg this is such a stunning gown - if your budget stretches to this then buy it immediately!
I’m very sorry to say but I think your choices are a little dated. You would look fabulous in something like what pp linked.

bafta16 · Yesterday 20:06

You are an attractive person with a super figure. Honestly you can do better. something a bit more cheerful and young.

Newsenmum · Yesterday 20:07

Even if navy it looks black in photos (am assuming there will be photos!) looks like a funeral dress Im sorry
also I feel it ages you!

I think, particularly the first one is lovely but would benefit from a little tailoring. My DD gets married next year and I’m dreading looking for something to wear.

Bigcat25 · Yesterday 20:10

I like the first one

Neuronimo · Yesterday 20:13

Quite like the first, but perhaps not for Spring. You have a lovely figures, perhaps you could go brighter. What does DD think?

lobeydosser · Yesterday 20:14

If you're wedded to navy then I think that Montgomery dress a few posts back is a lot more stylish. But yep that amount of money for polyester???

My favourite colour is navy and I wear it a lot including to funerals. For that reason alone I couldn't contemplate considering it for my daughter's wedding.

The next step could be to have a session with a personal stylist. Also head over to the Style and Beauty board...some great advice on there.
What about having the first one made up in teal, with that striking bow at the back? Agree it would be better shorter....bet you've got good legs....liberate them.

It's a party!! Have fun choosing - got loads of time before the Spring!

Zeborah · Yesterday 20:14

Sorry but you have a lovely figure & for the money you are spending there is something better out there for you

Partingofthewaves · Yesterday 20:16

You look like you are in mourning.

Viviennemary · Yesterday 20:17

Most unsuitable for a wedding. It's a no no to wear black.

Yes that’s the dress.

For a seven hundred pound dress it should fit you far better, be flattering, an appropriate look and a beautiful colour. ( I don’t like navy for weddings, too close to a funeral outfit) .
Both dresses are too big for you. If that was the only issue then I would say get the dress tailored to fit, but the style is a bit too stiff and boxy for you, especially for a Spring wedding . The hat doesn’t work with the dresses either.
The detail at the top of the shoulders is nice, on the first dress, but again more formal cocktail party than wedding.
What colours suit you ? In Spring you want something more vibrant, that will work in the brighter light. What is your dress size ? As I think you need a size down. Start with decent underpinnings, get a bra fitting if you haven’t had one for a while, and some good shape-wear if you are buying bigger because you are trying to hide a tummy or your shape has changed . If that’s the case then just smoothing things out will help with dresses fitting well, get a slip if your dress isn’t lined.
As you like formal looking dresses and structure, you do need something that fits you really well as a starting point.
You say you feel great in the dresses, what is it that you like ? Having a really luxurious dress ? The fabric ? The shapes ?

tsmainsqueeze · Yesterday 20:18

I really love the pearl scoop back , elegant and flattering but the bow? wrap? totally spoils it for me ,i can't see it suiting anyone.
2nd dress is a bit plain.
I think navy is lovely for a wedding but i would be going for a pale hat not navy.

First one nice but doesn’t scream MOB
second no

fair play to DH I know it’s not nice to hear but he was brave enough to give an opinion

fair play to DH I know it’s not nice to hear but he was brave enough to give an opinion

If this was my PIL my FIL would say he didn't like the dress just so she wouldn't spend £690 on it!

Cardhey · Yesterday 20:23

Sorry but you look like you’re going to a Victorian dress fancy dress part… awful!

TeaAndALittlePeace · Yesterday 20:24

I love the back of both dresses, but I don’t think they flatter your mid section from the front. Also, could be a bit dark. Could something that flares out at the bottom be a bit more flattering for you I wonder? And I by to dark I don’t mean change it for something super bright or light. A lighter navy, or a French blue could look nice.

Agree with husband, sorry. Colour, shape both just wrong
