Husband dislikes my mother of the bride dress choices, am I wrong?

Husband hates the dresses I loved - mob btw! He says the colour is wrong, the shape doesn’t suit. I felt fantastic in them ☹️. Ditching dh isn’t an option. Are they awful or is he being unreasonable?

Ot was more the shape than the actual dress. There's no way I woukd order from somewhere that offers every dress in 50 colours for a start.

For that shape to work, you need to be very slim like the model who is wearing the dress. Op has a good figure but I don’t think the dress you linked is for Op.

OP - with that kind of budget get yourself to a posh department store. Book yourself a visit with a personal shopper. I think you can do better than John Lewis though, try Harvey Nichols or Selfridges. I for example have a beautiful silk dress I wear for weddings from Harvey Nichols. It's a little too informal for a MOB but there are similar dresses that are approx the same price range. (£400-600ish). (Although very sadly they have just been bought by Frasers so I despair at ther new customer service and returns policies)

Perhaps once you have had a stylist session, colours done etc you could hire something amazing (if you are not wanting to pay ££££) for a wow outfit that you won’t wear again ?

Im with your husband on this op.
Its not flattering not in a harsh way op but it looks ageing , like it will add years to you.
And the wrap around huge bow sorry it looks hideous.
Its like a funeral outfit one would wear to an enemys send off.

Your the mother of the bride try to look like it.

This store is excellent for MOB dresses 👗

With your lovely new figure (well done btw!) and your budget, could you not have something made for you? Custom-made clothes fit in a way that shop bought can't (because the latter have to be cut to fit "most people") but with bespoke you can choose style AND colour...and look and feel spectacular!

Op, just noticed that Needle and Thread, that you said you love, offer ‘try before you buy’ . Great opportunity to try something different before the London trip with your daughter. Best of luck.

Sorry, I think they're a bit 'heavy'! Thick, dour, funereal even. You look to have a lovely figure, maybe more of a 50's tea dress would show it off better, in a 'happier occasion' colour?

I was MOB in April and understand how you just want to get your outfit organised but don’t rush into something. I lost 6 stone the year before (I’m 65) and tried on so many outfits but just didn’t feel they were me! Well done on the 9 stone - you need to wear something to celebrate that amazing achievement! I ended up getting a gorgeous dress from Needle and Thread and I felt a million dollars. (My DH loved it also which was important too 😊). It’s such a special day you want to “feel” your very best! Good luck- you will find your dress! This was mine 💕

Beautiful dress. I am sure you looked amazing.

Not all over 60’s. I’m coming up for 80, been looking at all the websites recommended here and would happily choose this Bombshell dress.

Plus op says she loves Needle and Thread, lovely flimsy floaty dresses there.

Lovely dress. I agree age is just a number, 80 is too young to wear a frumpy dress.

ElizaSchuyler · 18/08/2026 00:44

Needle and Thread do some amazing dresses.

Bunionbandit · 18/08/2026 10:58

The 1st one is ok, nice shape & style quite elegant, but I think would be nicer if not actually fabulous in a lighter colour.

The 2nd one is just awful. Sorry.

HLK6 · 21/08/2026 00:47

I have to agree, that dress is absolutely awful.
Pick another that's totally different 😉
