Husband dislikes my mother of the bride dress choices, am I wrong?

Husband hates the dresses I loved - mob btw! He says the colour is wrong, the shape doesn’t suit. I felt fantastic in them ☹️. Ditching dh isn’t an option. Are they awful or is he being unreasonable?

Sorry your husband is right. Those are awful and too big. Navy isn’t really suitable for a spring wedding. The hat is nice.

None of them are flattering on you. The length of the first one is all wrong, and they give you no shape. Infact they make you look wider as the waist sits in the wrong place. You need a dress that pulls you in more and gives you some shape and I agree about a good bra.

I would also avoid anything that screams mother of the bride.

"Yes, definitely a good bra!" I agree, too.

I bought the PrimaDonna Madison bra. Even though I never mentioned getting a new bra, some female friends looked at me and said, "Wow, that bra you are wearing gives you a nice lift". It was the woman in the lingerie store who picked it. She had me try on about 10 different bras. The Madison is widely recommended by fitters for managing natural breast asymmetry.

I am flabbergasted that they are listing a dress for £690 & not even bothering to provide ANY details (that I can spot) on the fabric content?!!!

The fabric thing was my first thought too! It's unbelievably difficult to buy 'occasion' dresses which aren't polyester, which I think every dress linked to on here is and which I wouldn't spend money on.

Poppy61 · Today 06:31

I agree with your husband. Your hair looks amazing though

Twiglets1 · Today 06:38

Gloves are OTT and I just went to a formal wedding - no one was wearing gloves.

The navy dress is too dark for a Spring wedding. It doesn't really suit you and you seem to have a nice figure so could find something much more flattering and appropriate to the Spring season. I would have a look in shops like Boden or Mint Velvet.

Whatwouldnanado · Today 06:45

You can do sooo much better for reasons above. You are planning early for a spring wedding (or are you in Aus?)
Go to a department store where they do a consultation service eg John Lewis UK.

Can I just say I’m crying with laughter at some of the descriptions. I think these dresses and colour are definitely a big fat no. DH is pleased that the internet agrees with him as he was worried he’d upset me

but if they don’t suit, they don’t suit and I’d much rather know than buy a dress and look awful!!!

going shopping in London with dd in September - hopefully we’ll have more luck together. I live 4 hours from her so takes some organising

I do actually really appreciate the honesty 🥰

You have a nice husband who cares about your feelings but wants you to look your best at the wedding for your own sake.

Going shopping with your daughter is a great idea. If she's anything like mine she will be very honest but also have a younger perspective (I'm 60 with a daughter in her early 30s and had to run my wedding guest outfit past her for her seal of approval recently).

InfoSecInTheCity · Today 07:03

There are element of both that I like but overall agreeing with the consensus that you could do better. The 2nd dress the deep scoop back is lovely, the first dress the swoopy bit across the shoulders (can you tell I don’t know much about fashion) is a nice detail. Neither does your waist any favours and the colour isn’t right.

i also have lost a load of weight, I was obese from primary school till about 12 months ago, lost 10 stone and weigh less now than I did when I was 11. I struggled immensely with the fact that I had absolutely no reference point for what adult clothes styles I should wear, no idea of shapes or styles at all. I’d also lived 30 years wearing black and dark grey so I didn’t stand out, everything matched and because I think I thought it was slimming (the pictures tell me I was wrong!)

one of the best things I did was get dressed in leggings, a flattering bra and a vest then I took full length pictures from different angles in broad daylight. I then uploaded the pics to ChatGPT and asked it to tell me what colours would best suit my colouring, what jewellery tones would best suit my colouring and what shapes would best suit my shape. That gave me a good basis to go shopping with.

PhaedraTwo · Today 07:22

There are elements of both I like and I like them better than any of the alternative suggestions. There are horrors on here.

@Biggles27

OP, one thing I would suggest is that it would be better to make a special shopping trip for your dress in the New Year, rather than this September.

The last of the summer dresses are moving into the sales now; the autumn/winter/Christmas dresses will be coming in in September, including in Occasion wear.

You've said that it's a spring wedding, so I'm guessing around May.

I would wait until around February to look for dresses, to be honest.

You need a special dress which is from the 'Spring' palette, the lighter, brighter colours.

I’d not do this, most shops will not have their spring range yet, just bits, it will be march before they come out fully, Howevee I agree with fbe poster, wait till then, as your body will continue to change shape,

On no account go to phase eight

What's wrong with Phase Eight?!

WitcheryDivine · Today 07:30

Well done OP for taking it in such good heart!

I was thinking if you posted some pics of you in normal clothes (top and jeans maybe) it’d be easier to see what shapes might suit you.

and well done on that weight loss!! Bet that wasn’t easy at all 💪💖

What's wrong with Phase Eight?!

Every time someone asks where they can get a dress for a wedding, the answer is always ‘have you tried Phase 8?’. It’s so unimaginative! Every time.

Thats my thoughts anyway.

minnowonthesay · Today 07:50

I think someone needs to invent a website just filled with real life pictures of MOTB’s, MOTG’s and wedding guests, a bit like Vinted, with the option to filter by wedding venue, time of year, colour and size! Imagine just being able to scroll through, save the looks you like and then go shopping for them - perhaps even have a selling option with each picture, so it could be the shoes, hat, bag, outfit.

MerryUmberHedgehog · Today 07:53

If he cant tell you that it really doesnt suit you then who can? You should take his advice. Sorry.

Each to their own but most of it's awful too.

Back looks great on both. Shape not right on the front.

Yeah and that. I wouldn’t shop there either.

sesquipedalian · Today 08:00

OP, your dresses may be navy but they look very somber, and a wedding is a joyful occasion. Leave those for another day, and find something a bit brighter for a spring wedding! As MOB, you need to stand out a bit, not fade into the background.

AlphaApple · Today 08:00

Go shopping for some good shapewear before trying on another dress. It makes such a difference.

i think a fuller skirt would suit you more than the ones you have showed us.

i liked the hat and your hair.

Slugfest · Today 08:06

Sorry OP, I agree with your husband. Colour is wrong and they don't hang well.

Easilyforgotten · Today 08:09

AllFloatOn · Today 00:47

I haven’t read the full thread, but if your DH thinks they don’t suit you then he must think you look better in things he sees you in other times. Maybe you could start by looking at what shapes from your actual wardrobe really do suit you (and colours!) and make you look your best, and find a more formal dress with those elements.

I think this is excellent advice.

Cakeandcardio · Today 08:16

You have a lovely skin tone and hair colour. With a spring wedding you could get something beautiful in a bright colour such as pink or coral.

I’m also in my 60s. And my question to you, @Biggles27 is - do you not like contemporary clothes?

Have you looked at every smart dress on

Net a Porter
Mytheresa
Liberty

etc, etc?

I concur with the majority here - the outfits you’ve shown would make you look really unnecessarily dowdy and un-joyful on the day. They’re a bit ‘Funeral in Narnia’.

Look for the sort of outfit you’d enjoy wearing for any other grand spring celebration - without the dreaded, style free words ‘Mother of the Bride’ attached.

"Funeral in Narnia" 😂
