Today is the start of meteorological Autumn and the weather this week, certainly looks like it's going to match up to the new season! As for the rest of Autumn, there aren't any strong signals either way as to what to expect but here are some thoughts from….
TheWeatherOutlook.
And Netweather's thoughts for the week ahead...

Dressed for winter today not autumn. Would be nice if it was warmer than 6 degrees when I get out of work this evening.

I'm also dressed for winter today. 6 degrees here too on the NE coast of England and for the past two days, the bitter wind is making it feel more like zero. It definitely feels like winter has landed.

Looking forward to picking DD up in a couple of hours and then having no school run next week (half term here)

Going to build the fire up and get more logs ready for hibernation later!

Torrential rain right now. It’s been raining on and off all day but this feels like a tidal wave right on top of the house. I do not like these very heavy downpours that seem to be more the norm in this decade.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/10/2025 06:00

It's 2 degrees here on the NE coast of England this morning and it feels very duscombobulating. I think with the clocks going back it all just feels like Sudden Winter.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/10/2025 06:27

Me again...

I'm m now just listening to the howling winds outside and realise thats why the forecast says it's a real feel here of -2. I'm wracking my brain to think where my thermal tops are as it is going to be bitterly cold at Tynemouth Market later this morning.

GloriaSmud · 26/10/2025 07:07

It looks like you've got some strong winds for a while but then it should quieten down, RainbowZebraWarrior. Still going to be chilly though so wrap up warm for the market!

I hate the clocks going back ~ as well as the nights drawing in it takes me ages to adjust sleep-wise. I'm not designed for 4am wake-ups!

And for the week ahead, looks chilly in the north ~ definitely some overnight frosts to come, especially for Scotland but for central areas/the south and Wales, starting chilly but becoming milder as the week goes on.

Cold for this time of year! We often get a mild October half term. I have a feeling (based on nothing) that we are in for a cold winter…I’d actually like to see some snow. Rather that than mild and grey.

I don’t like the clocks going back either. Takes me ages to adjust and I’m not a fan of early dark evenings.

I totally forgot the clock change and ended up being up very early this morning! Nice and quiet though.

There's a suggestion of a colder winter in the forecast. I'd prefer some proper cold too if it means bright days and not endless grey skies.

Edited

I was just drafting up a thread about some of the early thoughts that some websites have on winter (and include that link to Netweather!) but it looks like at the moment that most weather models are pointing to a warmer than average winter. There are other signals though that forecasters use (like La Niña) that are edging towards a colder/drier winter, so we'll see.....

I'd be very interest in any of your weather thoughts, @GloriaSmud !

GloriaSmud · 26/10/2025 18:37

I shall try and put a thread together over the next few days, Vegemiteandhoneyontoast Smile

It's been so windy here on the NE coast of England today. Just died down now.

Thinking of folk in Jamaica this evening. I was married there in 1998, and I always think of the Caribbean as such a beautiful and idyllic place, but then these catastrophic storms hit them. Weather is really frightening sometimes.

It's much warmer here today in my neck of the woods. Yesterday we had the log burner going at lunchtime. Today teeshirt temperature.

NoWordForFluffy · 04/11/2025 01:25

It's quite windy here, so any headline temp gets taken down a few notches with windchill.

It's good drying weather, in the short dry spells!

GloriaSmud · 04/11/2025 07:37

Quite windy the last day or two here as well but warm ~ 14C overnight! Although it's looking damp for us today, it looks like the mild weather's going to continue for the next few days....

I'm sick to death of this wet warmish weather. We've another week of it ahead. What happened to crisp frosts in November.

gingercat02 · 09/11/2025 14:02

I wish it was warmish here. I currently in 4 layers on my wildlife volunteering role in the rain (and gloves and gloves liners)

Delatron · 09/11/2025 14:09

Gosh I just looked at the forecast. I hope it doesn’t rain every day for the next week. How depressing.

I heard rumours it may get colder towards the end of the month. I don’t mind cold and sun. Hate mild and wet.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 09/11/2025 14:38

Rain makes life difficult but this last year has been unusually dry and if we don't get a whole load of rain this autumn and winter, we could be in trouble next year.

I keep an eye on local river levels and the water level in the river here dropped right down around April-May time and the river has been dribbling over the bed ever since, when in a normal year it would be full and flowing loudly.

If this is correct, we need that rain: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/nov/08/england-faces-extreme-drought-next-year

GloriaSmud · 10/11/2025 07:00

It is looking a bit of an unsettled week ~ typical Autumn really.
Next week is looking colder and looking at the GFS, at the beginning of next week, temperatures might struggle to get up to 6 or 7C during the day and there could be some overnight frosts. So a bit more 'Autumn into Winter' there!

Some thoughts from Netweather on the next week or two.....

Very mild in the week ahead before much colder conditions spread south

It will continue unseasonably mild this week, especially later in the week in the south. However, a switch to much colder conditions looks to take place next weekend in the north, with colder arctic air spreading south early the following week.

Thanks @GloriaSmud was so mild this weekend. We’ll all be in for a shock when it turns much colder!

GloriaSmud · 10/11/2025 07:59

We will indeed @Delatron! There's even mention of the 's' word in some forecasts (although if it does snow, it looks like only over high ground.)
