Start of meteorological Autumn (September 1st)

Today is the start of meteorological Autumn and the weather this week, certainly looks like it's going to match up to the new season! As for the rest of Autumn, there aren't any strong signals either way as to what to expect but here are some thoughts from….
TheWeatherOutlook.
And Netweather's thoughts for the week ahead...

Ah I love snow. I moved down south from Yorkshire for a warmer climate but we rarely get good snow down here. I’m very low by the Thames.

There was one spectacular year (though it did take everyone by surprise). We had so much snow in the space of a few hours. Loads got stuck and people had to sleep in John Lewis in High Wycombe! Very rare though.

GloriaSmud · 11/11/2025 07:00

Ah yes, Delatron, the south often misses out when it comes to snow. And I lived in Leeds for a few years in the late 70s. I think it was the 1979 winter that was especially memorable.....<happy sigh> so much snow!....

It looks likely that there's a cold snap coming over the weekend and throughout next week. Friday looks grim though for England as a band of rain moves slowly northwards (I'm wondering whether there might be a few weather warnings about that for some areas....)

Some thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook about the next few days/into next week...

Wow, apparently I haven't been on this thread for a couple of months. Blame moving house for that. I've popped on as my roofer decided to push the work back a week due to the rain forecast yesterday/today (he was right despite the blue skies and sunshine as he was telling me). I really hope it's going to stay dry next week as per the forecast as my roof will rip off in any stormy weather and really needs doing.

If you believe in prayers and good thoughts please send them my way for dry, settled weather next week for the E.Mids. I'll send back cake and wine Cake Wine

MotherOfCatBoy · 12/11/2025 06:19

Good luck with your roof @Pixiedust1234

Anyone seen the rain forecast for Friday? Apparently here in S Wales we are going to get 28mm in one day! What do other forecasts say - do we need to start building a big boat?

GloriaSmud · 12/11/2025 07:20

@MotherOfCatBoy Friday (and overnight into Saturday) does indeed look dreadful for England and Wales (and a boat might well be needed! 🛳) I wouldn't be surprised if there are some weather warnings issued...

@Pixiedust1234 your roofer should be ok for next week ~ no strong winds forecast and looks fairly dry.

Thanks @GloriaSmud - hoping DS’s rugby is cancelled so I can have a lie in!

If it rains heavily all day Friday and on into Saturday morning, it might well be cancelled, Delatron!

Netweather's thoughts on the solar storm that's going on at the moment ~ might be another chance to see them tonight but it might be too cloudy for some places...

We had stunning Aurora here last night. I knew it was forecast to hit on the 12th after the Coronal Mass Ejections from earlier this week, but sods law it hit between 1 am and 5am and I was asleep. Woek up to some amazing pics from my hard-core pals in my Aurora group.

Fingers crossed for tonight. The stats do look good so it does just all hinge on the weather. I'd say visibility could be good as soon as its dark in Northern Scotland. Moonrise isn't until 11pm or thereabouts so we just need clear skies!

Here was amazing at 3am for a couple of hours. North west Wales.

The sky where I am is forecast to be either 'partly cloudy' or 'cloudy' but if I get up for the loo in the night, I shall have a look out the window. Might get lucky!

Woo hoo! 🙌

They cancel rugby at the drop of a hat to be fair. Other DS has football which is rarely cancelled. But one less sports match in the rain is a result.

InMySpareTime · 12/11/2025 15:12

@Delatron because rugby tackles mean players heads on the ground, they can’t play if there are puddles on the pitch. As many rugby pitches are built on floodplains as soakaways, matches will often be cancelled for puddles.
When it gets properly cold, they are allowed to play on ice-covered pitches (which IME is more penitential).

Ooh thank you! I really should learn more about rugby since DS doesn’t look to be giving it up any time soon. I do always heave a sigh of relief when rugby season is over. Agree ice seems more dangerous!

Thanks, that is good news. The incoming deluge this weekend isn't.

GloriaSmud · 13/11/2025 06:47

Pixiedust1234 ~ yes, there is that to get through first. Next week looks dry but chilly ~ hope he wraps up warm while he's up there working on your roof! Some of the daytime temperatures are the sort of ones you'd expect during December ~ 6-8C.

Confirmation from TheWeatherOutlook that tomorrow looks awful~ I wouldn't be surprised if we do get that amount of rain...

Urgh, that's a whole load of rain! Poor DH does the afternoon dog walk, and it looks like he's in for (another) soaking tomorrow.

Reservoir levels have improved a fair bit recently for us: https://www.unitedutilities.com/help-and-support/your-water-supply/your-reservoirs/reservoir-levels/

Not so much in other regions, apparently.

We've got a long drive to do tomorrow. Best pack the brollies!

becausetrampslikeus · 13/11/2025 10:14

Phew that’s down south tomorrow! Had a fair bit overnight already here … and I need to go out soon

MotherOfCatBoy · 13/11/2025 13:04

I’m staying in tomorrow, it looks foul for us, 27mm forecast. I had a bastard of a drive in the rain on Tuesday taking Mum back & fore to cataract surgery, I am going to hole up on Friday. Bugger that.

Thank you @GloriaSmud - we're south of the amber warning but in the yellow area and we'll be travelling south. It doesn't look good, though so I think we'll review the plan in the morning.

The last time we made a journey in weather like this was that incredibly wet winter - 2012? - where we drove from Oxfordshire to Somerset and some of the roads were like rivers. It was quite alarming at the time, especially as we were in an ancient Ford Fiesta. The current vehicle is much bigger but we'll still consider our options tomorrow.
