Saturday (1st March) is the start of Spring and for the beginning for the season, it’s looking quiet with some settled spells but chilly nights.

Some thoughts from Netweather….

And there's more of the same to come but still with some chilly nights.

I forecast a few days spent finishing off getting the onions in at the allotment!

Thanks @GloriaSmud it’s so settled and lovely. Definitely be tackling the garden this week!

justasking111 · 31/03/2025 13:12

We have to replant the tomatoes into the greenhouse the roots are poking out of the bottom of the pots in the conservatory. I'm keeping one in the conservatory this year for an early crop hopefully.

InMySpareTime · 31/03/2025 15:56

I’ll believe it’s real spring when my tulips open. They seem to know when the frost risk is over.

Delatron · 02/04/2025 13:18

Such a shame about the wind making it feel cooler…!

justasking111 · 02/04/2025 17:59

Tucked away on the decking at the back this afternoon was very pleasant to sit and read. Much chillier at the front of the house which faces north east.

GFS 06:00z run today is showing SNOW on 17th April. Hmm, GFS going nuts I expect, so expect it can be ignored. 15 days out so unlikely to be very reliable.
Do flowers like snow?

It was pleasant out of the wind!

Oooh I hope that doesn’t come to fruition @nannynick though I do fear we are all being lulled in to a false sense of security with this mild weather. April can often be very cold.

nannynick · 02/04/2025 18:36

Yeah I expect April will be a mix. Cold nights and early mornings, warm during the day, wind and showers to be expected. Enjoy the moments of warm when they happen.

justasking111 · 02/04/2025 20:54

The blossom on the damson and plum trees is beautiful. Fingers crossed no gales

justasking111 · 02/04/2025 21:04

The weather in Spain and Portugal is awful this week. So I mustn't complain

GloriaSmud · 03/04/2025 07:20

The GFS often does go a bit loopy at the end of the run! But for the next week it's looking like more of the same ~ settled, warm days but chilly nights. At this rate though, the lack of rain might mean I have to start watering things at the allotment, which is a bit worrying this early in the year.

Yesterday was nice but windy ~ my small greenhouse went over several times so I'm not sure how many seeds are going to come up after those episodes!

There's already some wildfires due to lack of rain. Moors Valley country park in Dorset has had them two days in a row.

Delatron · 03/04/2025 08:07

I was wondering when the lack of rain would start to become an issue.

It’s very strange for this time of year and this country.

I hope they can get the wild fores under control. We could definitely do with a few showers.

It's my birthday on 15th and often snows/sleets so that's actually not unusual

Sinkintotheswamp · 06/04/2025 13:44

I forget how much freedom sunny weather brings me. I'm not swamped with laundry, I can sit in the garden and read whenever I want. Saving money on gas bills. Don't have to wear a heavy coat each time I head out. Bit less of a grumpy Victor Meldrew....

Delatron · 06/04/2025 14:08

It makes me so happy! I do fear we’re in for a shock when it all goes back to normal..

It is statistically more likely to snow at Easter than Christmas.

Sinkintotheswamp · 06/04/2025 14:22

At least we'll have excess chocolate to console ourselves with if it happens.

GloriaSmud · 10/04/2025 16:49

So after a week or two of settled weather, things become cooler with the chance of rain this weekend.

As lovely as this weather's been, it would actually be nice to get a bit of rain now ~ I've been putting onions in at the allotment, with another tray or two to do but need to do some more digging but that's impossible at the moment. My allotment neighbour did offer the use of her pickaxe a few days ago though!

It’s been so dry here I’m onto my second water butt already. I don’t usually need to even water anything until about August.
I will miss the sun and warmth though, hopefully we’ll get a decent summer.

justasking111 · 10/04/2025 18:47

The rushing stream outside a pub near us was a trickle today. We havent had rain for nearly a month. The blossom has set on the plum trees. Now they need water. The tomato plants need watering every day. Garden aint for the faint hearted

Pixiedust1234 · 10/04/2025 21:01

with the chance of rain this weekend.
That settles my dilemma. Specialist exercise class or doing more weeding while it's dry - I guess I'm staying at home and cracking on. I have one more large flowerbed to dig over and then the whole garden will be done including lawn edging. I have never managed to get on top of it all before despite living here twenty plus years 😮

I will be glad of some decent rain though, I do worry about the wildlife especially with the fires.

GloriaSmud · 14/04/2025 19:57

Well here's something we've not seen for a while ~ a weather warning for heavy rain for tomorrow and Wednesday, covering mostly Wales and the SW.

And it looks unsettled for the next week or two as well before possibly drying up as we head into the last few days of April.

Well I’m glad the wet spell didn’t last too long. Next week looks lovely and warm. I don’t remember a spring this nice for a very long time!

InMySpareTime · 24/04/2025 17:21

We had just enough rain recently to get my seedlings germinating and refill the water butts, I’m ready for another spell of warmth and blue skies.
