Saturday (1st March) is the start of Spring and for the beginning for the season, it’s looking quiet with some settled spells but chilly nights.

Some thoughts from Netweather….

Hello all and happy May Morning to you all …

My car reckoned it was 25.5 here in S Wales yesterday and having popped out the back garden where the stone flags are still warm ish, it feels like it’s b going to be a proper scorcher today. More like June or July than early May.

All the hawthorn is out, along with all the bluebells. My lavender is budding and so are my roses. Everything is a month early.

I see the Climate Change Committee said we weren’t prepared enough for events like floods and heatwaves… I second the worries about wildfires.

Must check for green fly today 🙈

If you don't have enough then I can send you mine!

< looks hopefully >

We've had the swarms of greenfly here today, but we've now had a marked drop in temperature and there's quite a few lightning strikes popping up now on the NE coast of England

Bloody loads of green flies and wee black fruit fly type things. Horrible
Cool (15) and cloudy now

GloriaSmud · 01/05/2025 20:45

A horribly muggy 22C here (Leicester), we've just heard a rumble of thunder and the wind's got up.

I got covered in green flies even in London. Feels like July. All very bizarre

GloriaSmud · 05/05/2025 08:26

And our dry Spring continues, with nothing much in the way of decent amounts of rainfall showing up as we go through May.

Netweather's thoughts on the next few weeks.

Tough on farming here. But also in Europe.

GloriaSmud · 05/05/2025 08:31

And the long-range forecast from the metoffice, as we go into June.....

Friday 9th-Sunday, 18th May
Dry across the UK at the start of this period with clear or sunny spells for the majority of places. Cloud will likely thicken across the far north and northwest during the weekend with some outbreaks of rain for a time. There is also a small risk of some heavy showers in the far south or southwest. Through the following week, high pressure will be dominant across the UK. This will bring predominantly fine and dry weather for the majority of places. A few light showers are possible at times, but heavy rainfall is not expected. Temperatures are likely to be slightly above normal for the time of year, although there is a chance of some cold nights.

Monday 19th May - Monday, 2nd June
Fairly typical weather for the time of year is most likely through this period. Overall, fine and dry weather is more likely to dominate although this will be interspersed with occasional spells of rain and showers, with a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms in places. Overall, temperatures will most likely be near to or slightly above average.

It is a worry now. And I can’t see any rain on the forecast for the next 10
days for the SE.

Sinkintotheswamp · 05/05/2025 09:39

The cheap beer I bought for slug traps still hasn't been used as it's so dry out there.
Even the sunflowers are surviving in the soil with just a ring of organic 'by appointment to The Queen' slug repellent pellets. (I am happy I have wanky royal slug pellets).

gingercat02 · 05/05/2025 10:09

We had a few light showers yesterday but barely enough to wet the ground.

GloriaSmud · 05/05/2025 10:33

We had a heavy rain shower yesterday when we were at the allotment but not enough. It just seems the main job is watering whatever plants have gone in ~ there's always a procession of people going past to the water tanks. The water bill for the allotment society must be big already and the water's probably only been switched on for the last 5 weeks or so after the winter.

we’ve had rain in the south east today. Typical as we’re heading off on a night away to the coast!
how does all this dry fair for our summer? Are there any ideas what’s in store yet

TheWeatherOutlook has some early thoughts here on what our summer might look like.

Any thoughts from our experts on what May might be like? Got a week of commuting to London (from Essex) the last week of May so I hope it doesn't get too hot.

last week seemed like about 28 one day, I was surprised.

At the moment, the GFS only goes up to the 21st May so it's a bit early to say. This high pressure that's been sitting over us for the last few weeks though, it could take a lot to shift it so I wouldn't be surprised if we're looking at similar weather in that last week, to what we've got now!

Drove over the tops from Rochdale to Hebden Bridge today. Reservoirs were definitely at lower levels than I have seen at this time of year.

Worrying

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 05/05/2025 17:34

I hate this lack of rain, it makes me nervous. I work as a gardener and whilst it's lucky that the main property has its own water supply, I'm spending a great deal of time watering rather than tending plants. There are so many new trees and plants that have gone in lately and they all need a lot of water. The soil is clay over brash and when there's regular rain everything is fine, but it drains and dries very quickly. We've done what we can with mulches on the beds but the new trees are in grass so need a lot of watering.

nannynick · 05/05/2025 21:20

Heathland fire today near me. It did rain a little today but not enough to prevent a heathland fire.
Prolonged dry spells makes for higher fire risk.

justasking111 · 05/05/2025 21:31

Wonder if there'll be a hosepipe ban
