Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

I'm on the southwest coast, should be driving up to London on Thursday. I think I'll try to delay it!

MysticalMegx · 28/10/2023 21:52

Does it look like it may be contained to the south? What are the chances it may hit Yorkshire? DP is away for a few weeks and im not a fan of high winds 😪

Or drive up a day or two before!

HJ40 · 28/10/2023 21:54

Due to travel from London to York on Thursday and back on Friday (train). Best case all is fine. Worst case is I get there are can't get back again! Will be following with interest to decide if I go or not.

Hibernatalie · 28/10/2023 21:58

I'm South East (London) - BBC Weather currently predicting 45mph wind on Thursday

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 28/10/2023 22:18

Watching to see how this unfolds, we’re utterly broken after babet, could do with next years harvest not having a second battering so soon after the last.

Calmdown14 · 28/10/2023 22:20

We haven't stopped being battered since Babet and still in a weather warning til Monday. Closed bridges and knackered roads are making getting anywhere difficult.

But thankfully it didn't cooincide with the high tide of the week before (and still need to get through a flood warning tonight)

What are the tides for the south coast like on Thursday as that will play a key role.

Placemarking.
Another Welsh girl planning on heading North for a Zip Wire experience mid week.

May need to re-book!

Checking in, thanks as always OYBBK

😡🤣
I loathe our weather now a days .
Hotter than hot or stormy and wet

Me too!

I had an awful realisation this morning. The starlings that usually nest in the eaves under my window (in Spring) have been back and forwards the past few days. When I went out early today I saw and heard the cheeping of chicks. It literally stopped me in my tracks. They must have gotten all out of synch with the warm temps in late Sept. There's no chance these poor things will survive. It's bloody November next week! My 75 yr old rurally brought up Dad was flabbergasted. Never known anything like it before. They've had second broods in July before, which is late for them, but this is madness.

wanttokickoffbutcant · 28/10/2023 22:42

My husband was in Worthing visiting his mother today and the weather was fierce. We are in London and it is just very wet.

RoseAndRose · 28/10/2023 22:43

At least deciduous trees are (finally!) shedding their leaves

colouringindoors · 28/10/2023 22:44

Urgh. Thanks for the heads-up.

Theimpossiblegirl · 28/10/2023 22:44

Place marking as I've got a flight from Bristol on Thursday and it's not the best airport for windy weather. I'm tempted to change it.

OriginalFloorboards · 28/10/2023 22:50

Thank you. We have horses at home. I’ll let other horse pals be aware and have it on their radar.

Embelline · 28/10/2023 22:52

We’ve got a weather warning for Thursday and Friday so far (Essex) so I’m wondering how bad it’s actually going to get as we often get these pop up then they seem to miss us.
does sound like it’s going to be a bad one though. Dreading losing the fences that are hanging on by barely a thread!

EarthSight · 28/10/2023 22:54

DarklySparkly · 28/10/2023 21:07

Thanks @OhYouBadBadKitten . We are on half term here in Wales and were planning to head from home (edge of the Brecon Beacons) to Snowdonia for a few days at the end of the week. May well be postponing by the looks of it. Placemarking so I can keep an eye on this thread.

I don't know if there will be floods, but you don't want a big tree branch to fall on or just in front of your car.

What kind of good is there is that?

I live in Gwynedd and yes, it's not worth it.

Delphigirl · 28/10/2023 22:56

Watching with interest

megletthesecond · 28/10/2023 22:57

I hope my fence makes it.

3luckystars · 28/10/2023 22:58

Is it predicted for Wednesday or Thursday, and also which direction is is coming from does anyone know?

Notmycircusnotmydonkeys · 28/10/2023 22:59

Mumoftwotoddlers · 28/10/2023 09:09

Spotted that system yesterday, it does look like it has the potential to be nasty, I reckon some amber warnings for wind will be issued

It is also, worryingly, a similar scenario that happened around the 2007 floods... groundwater levels high, rivers full, and two big rain events within 2 weeks. I didn't see anywhere what the actual rainfall was for Babet, but on the radar models it looked to be as heavy as June '07 and if that happens back to back across the same catchments it will test the flood barriers. But at least this storm is coming from the right direction so all the flood models will work properly

LadyHag · 28/10/2023 23:00

Oh no, we're on holiday not far from Gt Yarmouth, will have to watch this closely.

Ohyoubaditten! Thanks - I love readong your threads!

Okaaaay · 28/10/2023 23:00

Slightly off topic but I’m supposed to be travelling with friends Newcastle to London (and back) on Thurs. I have a low threshold for cancelling due to the weather (previous grim experience). If things are as bad as suggested with 40mph gusts in London, would it feel reasonable to cancel to other mumsnetters?
