Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Waves from across Poole Harbour. When the wind blows straight in from the sea it can be grim, and our building gets quite a battering. You don’t have to go far inland for it to be calmer. It is quite spooky now with a howling wind, though fortunately no rain.

mamabear715 · 02/11/2023 19:10

I wondered about the names too.
I assumed Babet should have been Babette. Not clear why BBC and / or Sky kept saying Keer-on this time.. seem to have gone to a more normal Ciaran now.

LooksABitElvish · 02/11/2023 19:21

@Needmoresleep I had such a low mood/feeling of impending doom yesterday evening too. Plus a huge headache. Must have been extra awful coupled with all your stress.

Big hugs to everyone affected particularly those in CI.

LooksABitElvish · 02/11/2023 19:23

Ciaran was actually Ciarán so pronounced with an -awn ending. I think Babet was Dutch. Storms are being named in conjunction with Irish and Dutch meteorological services.

As the fun continues to unfold, we're now at a hotel after water started running down our lounge walls. It's not desperately dramatic and we could probably stay there, but there's no chance I'll sleep if we do.

Cat is in the cattery (thank god they had space) and we are in St. Aubin. We should know more after a proper building assessment tomorrow.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 02/11/2023 19:40

Hope everyone is doing ok in this awful weather.

I posted last night to say I was stuck on the south coast. I'm still hours from home - finally made it to London just to end up stuck for hours due to a line fault. No sign of the train moving and it's getting beyond a joke now.

The weather on the coast was shocking this morning and my hotel room was pouring water from the ceiling and through the windows!

My manager told me to stay put at the hotel but I needed to get back to my ill DD and to take over childcare so my DP can go to work. Should have listened to him as I could be stuck here all night!

Wishing you well FoleyHuck and PissedOffNeighbour. * *I hope things improve for you both and for everyone affected by this awful storm. We were spared this one. We has some rain last night but nothing exceptional. Co. Cork.

WimbyAce · 02/11/2023 19:57

I am south coast, near Ringwood. Wasn't too bad here. Worst thing was the thunder lastnight, incredibly loud! Got to work fine and not too much debris about.

AdoraBell · 02/11/2023 20:07

Fingers crossed for you PissedOffNeighbour22 and hope your house gets sorted quickly FoleyHuck

We got off light, last night was loud but no damage other than and end cap from the guttering. Neighbours all okay too. Nearby villages are flooded.

FoleyHuck · 02/11/2023 20:31

@Sideorderofchips Did you have much damage in the end? I hope not, but I saw that video from Highlands Lane with the cars destroyed and have been thinking of you x

YesitsBess · 02/11/2023 20:41

Selsey and Bognor were probably the most dramatic scenes round here today and yesterday, the Bognor Tesco has always flooded at the mere sight of rain mind. Bosham is flooded also but it generally is this time of year anyway.

We were seriously seriously lucky.

Couple of slightly squiff tiles on the roof. A tree just about tickling the back of my car and lost my garden table and bbq. But otherwise insanely lucky. How about you

After a relatively quiet morning the wind seems to be returning to Bournemouth, and my front door is wide open as Dh key broke in the lock last night and so he is drilling old lock out !

I thought it was relatively tame especially considering how others have been affected, however it did take me three hours to drive to work in Bournemouth this morning (40 miles, usually takes 70-90 minutes) which was not at all fun, still not sure why. Still, am safely home now and didn’t have issues on the return journey.

For anyone who has been flooded I recommend Flood Mary’s guide https://floodmary.com/help-and-resources/after-a-flood/

You've probably seen her on TV, and she’s personally been flooded a number of times. Useful practical guidance.

I was living in Hastings in 1987, the devastation across the town that night still haunts me, a neighbour lost the side of their house, they’ve just said on the news we haven’t had a storm like this since 1987.

Tomorrow is granddaughters birthday, I’m making a unicorn cake, just wondering if it would be worth staying up tonight and baking it in case there’s no power tomorrow as I’m definitely not going to sleep tonight.

The town I grew up in has a plaque referring to the great storm of 1987 near the row of trees that got planted afterwards to replace the 50 + trees that fell down on the 2 mile road between our village and the town. Our road was saved as in a bit of a dip - only 1 tree fell down in whole of our road. But our community was devastated and, if my recollection is correct, a couple of people (from outside our immediate community who we didn’t know personally but who were known to people we knew well) had life changing injuries. Some friends at school didn’t have power for at least a fortnight afterwards. I remember spending the night huddled in bed hugging my sister. Our power came back on just in time for the 6 o clock news (no internet back then!) Michael Fish has been famous/infamous ever since.

Ps hope the unicorn cake was delicious and the birthday girl enjoyed their celebration.

It’s always so great that mumsnet send out the emails with these main stories 6 days after they go live..
We had swim practice cancelled due to the pending storm Wednesday and Thursday evening, but had already left when the email came through and don’t check phone while driving so still got there which was extremely frustrating.. hour round trip!
no storm occurred where I live, no so much as a snapped tree brunch, but our water supply is off due to the water being contaminated due to flooding… so schools closed again today and people queueing for hours last night to collect bottled water, Tesco bottled water flying off the shelves..

We were in africa when the 1987 hurricane hit, we flew home the day or two after and we’re told by the pilot before landing in London.
we saw a few trees down on our drive home but thankfully the only damage to our house was a tile blown off and smashed pain of glass in the green house. We seemed to have majorly avoided that storm.
