Storm Ciarán

This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Some guys came out today to nail sheeting over our shredded roof. Went to bed relaxed and reassured.

We woke up at 4.30 to rain water pouring through the lounge light fitting. So that fix obviously worked like a dream. Looks like we'll be moving out after all.

My parents are in the New Forest and they said Storm Ciaran wasn't too bad for them but they have no water supply currently because of it.

We've got friends with no power too.

The worst of it round here was trees down and traffic a bit mental in the morning as people tried to divert.

The footage from Jersey is pretty dramatic. I've never seen anything like it.

Looking out down the garden right now, I think today is worse than Thursday by quite a long way.

Very windy and pelting rain. I was going to go out but I'm not now.

That’s awful @FoleyHuck . Was it an emergency fix from the insurers? When we lost all our ridge roof tiles in the red wind warning event a couple of years ago the roofers said they couldn’t put any tarp on it because it wouldn’t stay in place (which made sense because it was the ridge).

We put tarp and bin liners in the loft instead and were lucky not too have too much rain as we don’t have any felt, so it was just a big open hole to the sky. Good luck with the repairs.

FoleyHuck · 04/11/2023 09:04

@Lovemycat2023 Yep. They did the best they could without scaffolding (it could be weeks until we can get scaffolding) but obviously it's not been anywhere near good enough. Our flat is significantly worse affected now than immediately after the storm.

Terrible weather forecast all week so I've no idea what they'll do next. The worse the top floor flats get, the more chance of the next floor down will get hit too.

justasking111 · 04/11/2023 09:11

So sorry @FoleyHuck . There's a shortage of scaffolding here at the best of times. Can you rent a lock up, store what is irreplaceable insurance wise and get the insurance company to relocate you?

FoleyHuck · 04/11/2023 09:15

@justasking111 We actually already have a lock-up although it's almost full! We have loads of spare office space post-pandemic and my boss has offered that I can use it so that's a plan for none-sentimental / valuable stuff.

We have a self-catering apartment right around the corner booked and ready for us to go to right now for the next few days until the situation is clearer. The poor cat is going back to the cattery though Sad

Lovemycat2023 · 04/11/2023 10:12

@FoleyHuck that was the delay we had too. Took a while to get a scaffolding tower in because there were so much damage locally. Sending good luck for a quicker fix than expected, and hopefully your cat will be ok at the cattery. I know I always worried about mine but they were pretty chilled out about it.

FoleyHuck · 04/11/2023 12:25

Thank you @Lovemycat2023. Usually our boy wedges himself right in the back of the cattery pen with his back to us and stays there sulking until dark, but today he got into his igloo bed and then popped his head out and ate some treats I'd put down for him right away.

I now feel hundred times happier that he feels ok there, almost like he knew I didn't need the worry!

Fbifan · 05/11/2023 10:24

@FoleyHuck so so sorry to hear about your home. The devastation in jersey has just been unbelievable. X
