Not quite January yet, but the weather warnings continue. Generally a mild outlook to come, though of course parts of Scotland will see more wintry weather on and off.

Was easy to scrape the car this morning though, only a thin layer of ice. That is a bonus to the cloud cover.

Was chilly on the school run 'buggy-push' this morning.

Kitten any sign of the cold ending in the South?

I'm finding this weather really awful. I think the last similar winter was 2010 was it - if I wasn't at work, I was asleep. It just really takes it out of me, I don't know why.

mum has an 87 year old friend who has hypothermia - she was worried about bills, her son realised she was ill after entering the house unexpectedly one day. She's been turning the heat on when she knows he is visiting apparently, so he didn't know she was sitting in an unheated house most of the time.

Morning all,
Icy cars again. DH is getting grumpy with the weather, but I keep reminding him it's better than all the widespread damaging storms we had last year.

Coffeecreme · 26/01/2023 09:26

i was so cold yesterday, all day and the fog was amazing in london, could only see half the Shard

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2023 09:32

I would have loved to have seen that Coffeecreme

Not really Emma a little warmer next week, but nothing that you would call mild I'm afraid. Staying generally fairly dry in the south, but perhaps wet and windy weather sweeping into parts of the north next week.

I am the person you hear muttering crossly "this weather - can't even see the Shard".

Thanks Kitten. Still convinced the correct temps aren't being reported.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2023 10:09

Emma you could use www.xcweather.co.uk to look at real time temperature and compare it to how it feels. Local weather can often be off a couple of degrees from official sites though.

The current damp and gloom certainly makes it feel colder. Partly through heat loss and partly because there's little solar gain from the sun shining though windows.

Kitten that's one of my faves! Currently says 6. No way is it 6.

also shows thick dark clouds though - nope. Quite bright. I have found the sunny days have been really cold too. Looking forward to better weather and getting out for walks.

Coffeecreme · 26/01/2023 10:42

yes my phone says 5 degrees, but feels like 1 degree

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/01/2023 11:22

I don’t mind nice weather cold walks. It’s the wet and cold I hate. And spring is starting to spring here. Catkins after starting to come out I noticed the other day.

crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/01/2023 13:36

Bloomin' lovely up here in Cheshire.
The sun is out, hardly any wind.
DH asleep on the sofa in the conservatory. Wink Bliss!

Who or what is WX?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/01/2023 20:58

Its just a host site for raw model data made into nicer looking format. Its not a forecast its a snapshot from a single model run that theyve taken.

This thread is quiet, which I'm assuming means more grey, coldish, occasional sunshine for the forseeable. To be fair, exciting weather usually messes with my plans, but I do like living in the UK where the weather could do pretty much anything at any given moment.

amberedover · 29/01/2023 10:17

I enjoy the unpredictability too but wouldn't be averse to a settled spell of moderate heat in the summer months .

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2023 13:08

It's looking pretty windy tomorrow into Wednesday for the northern half of the UK, especially in northern Scotland, due to a deep area of low pressure. It could gust to 80mph in some parts of coastal northern Scotland. Some rain about too.

But pretty quiet in the south for the time being.

I'm making the most of the dry, warm, breezy interlude to get all the bedding dry on the line. Not many "line dry" days at this time of year, so I'm making the most of it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2023 12:20

I'm enjoying the drying weather too.

You might be seeing various headlines and social media speculation about an upcoming cold spell. GFS has come up with a very cold easterly run. But... It's an outlier. At the moment the balance of probability is for it to remain average/mild.

OH I've seen polar donuts, beasts and more, but no solid forecast for more than a dusting of snow in places.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2023 13:03

Polar donuts - groan. Yes, they do spout some rubbish!

Looking colder next week and Netweather talks about a possible SSW, which might bring winter to a cold end.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2023 09:20

I'm very cautious about talk of a SSW event. It's possible, but it's a low possibility and may not actually bring anything anyway.

Very high pressure by tomorrow, with the chance for a lot more in the way of sun. So even though it looks colder, with a higher sun in the sky and no wind, it could actually feel warmer indoors by day.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/02/2023 12:02

It does look likely now that a SSW is about to be under way. However, there aren't any clear signals for this to propagate cold our way. If it does, it would be towards the end of Feb or beginning of March. Frankly, this would be rude of it with Spring in our sights.

megletthesecond · 08/02/2023 19:15

Is next week looking OK in the south west? I'd like a dry half term.

colouringindoors · 08/02/2023 19:54

SSW?!
